We’ve already brought you John Fitzpatrick’s tour of the 2014 Camaro SS. And now, Chevrolet’s Marketing Manager of performance cars John Fitzpatrick returns with a brief walkaround tour of Chevy’s recently-announced track beast, the 2014 Z/28.
As Mr. Fitzpatrick explains, Chevy brought the Z/28 to market for the first time in 1967 to dominate the SCCA Trans-Am series, and the track terror is back for the 2014 model year with GM’s nothing-short-of-awesome naturally-aspirated 7.0 liter LS7 V8 good for an estimated 500 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. And while the LS7’s power is nothing to sneeze at, the 2014 Z/28 also features a 300-pound decrease in mass thanks to optional air conditioning, reconfigured rear seating, and other weight-saving enhancements.
The tour concludes with the Z/28 roaring to life. Like so:

That engine belongs in the gen 5 ZL1…after all. the original ZL1 is a Handbuilt all aluminum 427 engine installed into a 1st gen Camaro…. Ok I’m finished….but the LSA would of been a better choice for the Z/28 the extra power would make the Z/28 a Z06 killer. Although slightly heavier up front ,it would of changed the handling balance and extra bits for cooling = more weight..but I guess that’s why they didn’t. Chevy and their pecking order…..
Still too heavy/tall and way too much frontal area.
My `88 IROC I built years ago craps on this thing.
Vortech SC 383/T-56 six-speed , 6-point chromoly cage , 315`s in the rear , 295`s in front.
A 88 iroc you have to be kidding me! You cant even compare the two cars. The 80s camaros were ugly!
Why does every new car have to be so tall and have the front end shaped like a brick ?
Engine sound is very underwhelming.
Joe Have you sen the 2014 Corvette? It is anything but tall or brick-like. Here, have a look:

The Camaro is the way it is; it is called design language, and along with its performance, has made it the best selling car in its class:

It has also shed 300 pounds, so heavy no longer applies.
And the current Camaro will whoop up on anything made in the 90s or 80s, your IROC included.
The new Camaro is a big car. But it is getting allot of hate here. Tall and heavy or not, this thing lapped the Nurburgring in 7:30. Thats fast to Ferrari’s standards. Electronic suspension and carbon ceramic brakes. I dont care what anyone has done to some 90s IROC. Im going to say that IROC would still fall short of the 10 minute mark on the Nurburgring.
It doesn’t matter to me, 60s 70s 80s and so on, I like em all…..long as it’s not a ford!
