The GM Authority Take

The Traverse’s October U.S. sales performance puts it in third place in its segment. To note, the Hyundai Santa Fe outsold Traverse in October, but the Santa Fe’s sales figures are somewhat misleading given that the “regular” Santa Fe three-row model and the Santa Fe Sport two-row model are included on the Santa Fe sales result.

The Traverse came in behind the Toyota Highlander (which technically is a large midsize crossover) and the Ford Explorer. But unlike in months past, the Traverse is closing the gap on the segment sales leaders. The Traverse did outsell the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Dodge Durango, Volkswagen Atlas, Buick Enclave (which shares the Traverse’s C1 platform), and Mazda CX-9.

Like in September, we attribute the Traverse’s noteworthy October sales performance, driven by significant gains at the retail level, to the following three factors:

  1. An all-new, competitive model that represents an attractive overall package
  2. Decent incentives to move existing inventory units
  3. A continuous change in consumers’ vehicle buying dynamics as car buyers continue to switching to crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) from other vehicle types like sedans

The mainstream full-size crossover segment grew roughly 12 percent in October, with all offerings except for the Toyota Highlander seeing growth. During the first ten months of 2017, segment sales increased about 7 percent to 868,805 units, with offerings from Hyundai, Honda, and Buick seeing negative growth, while the rest of the segment saw sales increase.

About Chevrolet Traverse

2018 Chevrolet Traverse Redline Edition exterior - 2017 Chicago Auto Show 003

The Chevrolet Traverse is a full-size crossover utility vehicle (CUV). It is the biggest Chevrolet crossover currently offered, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Trax and compact Chevrolet Equinox. It will also slot above the much-rumored, future Chevrolet Blazer.

The current model was introduced for the 2018 model year and represents the second generation of the Traverse nameplate. It rides on the extended-length GM C1 platform shared with the second-generation Buick Enclave. A shorter variant of the same platform underpins the second-gen GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5.

Compared to its first-generation predecessor, the second-gen Traverse is an all-new vehicle that is larger, lighter, sleeker and more modern. It also introduces new trim levels, including High Country and RS – neither of which were present on the first-generation model.

The Chevrolet Traverse is built at the GM Delta Lansing Township factory in Michigan operated by GM USA. It is currently the only plant that builds the vehicle alongside the second-gen Buick Enclave.

  1. Where’s the Acadia on the list?

    1. Not a full size crossover.

      1. But that could be said the same for highlander though even though Alex included.

  2. How many of the Explorers are police patrol vehicles? How different are the purely retail numbers?

    1. The police duty Explorer sales are not recorded under that like item and are instead reported separately:

We are working on ways to obtain data that breaks out retail vs fleet but currently have no way of doing so. That said, the Explorer’s fleet mix is higher than that of the Traverse… has bend consistently.

  3. The Traverse is still in transition mode. Selling down the outgoing 2017 models, while building a decent inventory of the new 2018 model.

All the hard work at GM/Chevy, is about to pay off. The Traverse will take share from all other players in the full size crossover group.

All of the reviews I have read have be very good, and the Traverse has great styling as well.

  4. I would love to see this outsell the Explorer at least and would love nothing more than to see Highlander sales decrease.
