Opel Confirms The Return Of ‘GSi’ Badge, New Model To Debut At 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show

A lot is changing at Opel these days. However, aside from the fact the brand is set to transfer hands from General Motors to France’s PSA Groupe, there’s good news on the performance front.

Opel and Vauxhall lead designer, Mark Adams, took to Instagram to confirm the return of a historic, iconic badge: GSi. The GSi badge long ruled before the days of OPC, and a new GSi model is set to debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show later this year.

Adams stated the GSi is “one of our most exciting future cars” and is a part of Opel’s seven new models coming in 2017. He also confirmed in the comment section that the GSi badge would be found on a new model at the Frankfurt show later this year. What isn’t clear is what model that will be.

The GSi has a long history associated with the Kadett, which would go on to become the Opel Astra. It could very well be that Opel’s next hot hatch will once again wear the coveted GSi badge. However, with news surrounding the next Buick Regal GS consistently leaking out, it may be the Opel Insignia GSi that will take center stage this coming fall. After all, the brand has revealed the Insignia Grand Sport, Sport Tourer and Country Tourer already.

Other than the confirmation of the GSi badge and this single photo, everything else is up for speculation. We’ll certainly know more in the coming months.

  1. They wont kill OPC badge because they are offering OPC line package on every model, and also on new Insignia. This definetlly will be middle hot (hatch) model in range, betwen regular and OPC models. I think about Astra with around 250HP and Insignia at around 300-320HP.
