Last week, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released its list of Top Safety Pick+ recipients and regular ol’ Top Safety Picks. The 2017 GMC Acadia didn’t earn the “plus” mark, but it was awarded the latter.
The 2017 Acadia was rated as “Good” in all areas of crashworthiness and received “Superior” marks with optional equipment for crash avoidance and mitigation. However, like many vehicles, the IIHS found the Acadia’s headlights as underperforming.
Above is the 2017 Acadia’s small overlap crash test, which takes place at 40 mph. While the Acadia is banged up, the test dummy would likely walk away from such an accident.
Along with the Acadia, two other GM vehicles received Top Safety Pick accolades, those being the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu and 2017 Cadillac XT5. The 2017 Chevrolet Volt and 2017 Buick Envision both received Top Safety Pick+ ratings.

Safety test without head restraints??
The testers need to see the motion of the head during the crash.
Windshield is cracked on impact and the head is impact on the side as well as the front impact!
Head restraints are not needed here as it was a frontal impact. Head Rest are for rear impacts.
Windshields will break into todays cars as they are part of the cars structure.
The head will hit the side as this was an offset crash and the motion of the crash goes to the left. This is why they have side curtains.
This did pretty well here as the passenger compartment held in place. The roof just defected a little but did not deform fully like some have and others still do.
It looks like it faired pretty good. I looked but couldn’t see any paint from the dummy on the side pillar in front as the motion was too fast.
