Chevrolet IndyCar Teams On Top At Phoenix Pre-Season Test

Chevrolet was worried that the special permissions granted to Honda to develop their aero kit in the off-season would see them outclassed by their rival in 2016, but after the first pre-season test, it looks as though Team Chevy’s dominance could be here to stay for yet another season.

During today’s pre-season test at Phoenix International Raceway, Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves and Simon Pagenaud were first and second fastest with lap times 19.2735 (190.894 mph) and 19.2884 seconds (190.747 mph), respectively. Both times squashed the previous IndyCar Phoenix lap record of 19.608 seconds (183.599 mph) set by Arie Lyeundyk in 1996.

Chevys also occupied third and fourth on the timesheets after Ed Carpenter Racing’s Josef Newgarden and Ed Carpenter clocked in laps of 19.2917 (190.714 mph) and 19.3316 (190.32 mph), respectively. Andretti Autosport’s Marco Andretti squeezed a Honda in the top five after setting a lap of 19.3351 (190.286) late in the day.
