After offering a first look at Buick’s upcoming electrified MPV early last month, General Motors’ SAIC-GM joint venture in China has just officially launched the all-new 2024 Buick GL8 PHEV.
The automaker unveiled the all-new 2024 Buick GL8 PHEV during a special brand event in Shanghai and is showing it for the first time to the general public at the 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China), where the electrified full-size MPV made its debut. As such, the new 2024 GL8 PHEV is launching in the Chinese market with a total of four variants spread across three distinctive trim levels.
In addition to the redesigned exterior following the brand’s Pure Design language in line with the flagship Buick GL8 Century, the all-new 2024 Buick GL8 PHEV debuts a next-generation interior with the latest technology and comfort solutions exclusive to the successful Buick van. Along with the higher level of refinement, the GL8 PHEV cabin introduces a new 15.6-inch screen module in the roof for rear occupants and a sliding center console that increases travel comfort.
In terms of configuration, all versions of the new 2024 Buick GL8 PHEV will be offered as standard in Avenir configuration, subdivided in Smart Edition, Exclusive Edition and top-of-the-line Luxury trims. All versions have a standard cabin with three rows and seven-seat capacity in a 2+2+3 layout, while the Luxury trim also offers a six-seat 2+2+2 option with captain’s chairs in the third row.
Mechanically, the 2024 Buick GL8 PHEV equips a new-generation plug-in hybrid powertrain that includes a battery that – according to SAIC-GM – uses “the same standard” as Ultium battery modules. The system includes a turbocharged, Miller-cycle 1.5L hybrid engine with triple AI algorithm, for an output of 292 kW or 392 horsepower along with 580 Nm or 428 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful plug-in hybrid MPV on the market.
The all-new 2024 Buick GL8 PHEV Avenir officially debuted at the 2024 Auto China and reservations are now open across the brand’s extensive network of official dealerships in the country. The model is a new addition to the extensive GL8 model lineup that now ranges from the entry-level Legacy, third-generation GL8, this new GL8 PHEV, and fourth-generation GL8 Century. Here is pricing for the GL8 plug-in hybrid:
- GL8 PHEV Smart Edition: 359,900 yuan (about $49,670 USD at current exchange rates)
- GL8 PHEV Exclusive Edition: 389,900 yuan ($53,810 USD)
- GL8 PHEV Luxury: 419,900 yuan ($57,950 USD)

It’s kind of surprising that this never made it to the states. People here still love their minivans even though CUVs/SUVs are so popular. Feels like it could have been a really nice luxury option.
Market must not have been as strong as I presume and maybe too expensive when compared to other options already available in the GM lineup.
Yeah I used to have a thing for premium minivans like the Chrysler Town & Country, Oldsmobile Silhouette, and the short lived Buick Terraza. Too bad we never got an American version of these.
In my opinion that is the ugliest Buick ever.
Totally agree and it looks to big and clumsy.
You really want to see ugly? Look up Hongqi HQ9. That thing is the perfect symbol of tacky if I have ever seen one. This Buick is relief to the eyes next to that thing.
These third world rides look fantastic in pictures, then you see it in person, and you realize its meh..
What GM needs in its lineup is executive seat options in the Denali and Escalade lineups. And get rid of the ‘ultimate’ Denali thing, it’s silly.
Third world? China? China has a maglev system in Shanghai, and sizable bullet train system. If they are third world, what does that make our country…fourth world? I love the Avenir/Sport Touring model breakdown system, just like Denali. I’ve had “Limited” and Premium II but this system is great for buyers, and people seem to find it helpful as they sell like crazy. Yeah for Avenir, Denali, and GM!
Totally fugly! I hope this POS never makes it to the US as a Buick. My uncle is turning in his grave. He was with Buick for 35 years on the assembly line.
Looks like a KIA Carnival which also looks like a Box as well.
What GM does need to do is, play catch up ball, and pump out PHEVs ASAP on all their SUVs, such as Toyota, Hyundai, Lexus etc.
Allan: Today on the street, an all new Hyundai Santa Fe pulled up next to me at a stop light. Man is that thing ugly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as square and boxy as that.
Assuming they will be sold in USA (sure)🙁, buy one in Mexico, avoid tariffs expense to US?
Just wondering,
