Outrunning the pack in an Overtime finish, William Byron, driver of the No. 24 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1, led two of his Hendrick Motorsports (HMS) teammates across the line to earn his third win of the season at Martinsville on April 7th, 2024.
Byron was followed by the No. 5 Camaro of Kyle Larson and the No. 9 Camaro of Chase Elliott in second and third, respectively. Each HMS machine was decked out in a cherry red paint scheme this weekend at Martinsville, making the motorsports organization the first to sweep the podium in the track’s history. Byron’s win was also the 29th for HMS at Martinsville.
“Just so proud of everyone at Hendrick Motorsports,” Byron said. “Grew up a big Hendrick fan. To be here for the 40th anniversary [of HMS], all that goes into just this organization, all the people, it’s all about the people… It’s pretty awesome. Badass to win at Martinsville. We’ve been struggling at the short tracks. Just kept inching up on it. I’ve got a great team. They just kept my head in it. It stunk to do a restart there at the end like that, but that’s the way it goes.”
HMS held the point for most of the race. Byron led 88 laps, Larson led 86 and Elliott led 64, the most of any team.
Bubba Wallace’s No. 23 Toyota TRD Camry finished fourth, while Ryan Blaney’s No. 12 Ford Mustang Dark Horse rounded out the top five. Alex Bowman, the fourth HMS team, put the No. 48 NASCAR Chevy across the line in eighth.
