The global microchip shortage continues to impact General Motors, as well as the broader automotive industry. The latest news for The General regarding the microchip shortage are continuing constraints for various features, including several models under the GMC brand. Now, GM Authority is covering the latest chip-focused constraints for GMC.
For those who may have missed it, GM Authority recently covered the Chevy models currently facing feature constraints as a result of the microchip shortage, so check out that post for more information.
Regarding GMC, an announcement made as of March 14th production indicates that several GMC models are currently under constraint for certain features. Affected models include the GMC Acadia, GMC Canyon, GMC Sierra 1500, GMC Sierra HD, GMC Terrain, and the GMC Yukon.
The features under constraint for these models include the Heated Steering Wheel feature, Heated Front Seats, Heated Outboard Rear Seats, Rear Park Assist, and Front and Rear Park Assist. As GM Authority has covered in the past, many of these features were previously under constraint as a result of the microchip shortage.

The global microchip shortage is the result of a number of different factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which curtailed chip production and increased demand for electronics, the China-U.S. trade war, and manufacturing shutdowns, among other issues. Recently, an earthquake in Japan resulted in production delays for Renesas, a GM microchip supplier.
To help curtail the effects of the shortage, General Motors prioritized its most popular models, specifically its full-size SUVs and pickups. Looking ahead, General Motors aims to reduce the effects of possible future shortages through the development of its own family of microcontrollers through a partnership with seven major microchip suppliers.
The federal government is also eyeing solutions to the chip shortage, with the Biden Administration backing a $52 billion microchip bill aimed at bolstering domestic chip production.

At this rate, even if my refreshed AT4 was ready to be built, I dont know that I would accept it.
As much as I want/need a new truck, spending 70k on an incomplete vehicle is a tough pill to swallow. Might just have to wait till 2023 when all this (hopefully) is sorted out.

I ordered a Sierra 1500 SLT, now told cannot get SLT convenience package, which includes the bucket seats and console. This whole process of getting a new truck is very crazy. The dealer also said 6.2 engines are on hold.

I ordered a 22 3500 dually gasser in LT trim in August no movement, I stumbled across a dually Denali 100 miles from my hometown and it wasn’t spoken for so I bought it, not really what I wanted but the only missing option is the heat in the back seat.
I bought a 2022 AT4 and still waiting on my chip. Does anybody know if I will get mine before they put any on on sold vehicles
I purchased my GMC 2500 AT4 In May of 2022. I was told that it had Addaptive cruse control but it would not work until my chip was put in. After waiting a year for my chip I was so excited when they told me my chip was available . After they installed the chip I drove it around and to my surprise the Addaptive cruse didn't work. So back to the dealer I went only to find out my truck wasn't equipped with Addaptive cruse. I have contacted GMC many time only to find out that I don't have a leg to stand on. So my advice to you is don't buy without the chips installed so at least you want be lied to like r I was
I just got my new Sierra AT4 without front heated and cooled seats, heated rear seats, and heated steering wheel. I live in a cold place, and it makes me hate the vehicle every time I get in it.
Why did you accept an incomplete vehicle?
if everyone would simply refuse to accept an incomplete vehicle, GM would not be able to get away with this incomplete vehicle nonsense.
I purchased my terrain January when it came in two models came in and I told him the whole one for me because I had no vehicle so I went out and picked it up it wasn’t until after I got it and came home a week later my son and I were taking a ride and we went to turn the heated seats on because of my back and they didn’t work when I called them they said my vehicle didn’t come with that feature and I said yes it does the paperwork says it has that option so then I found out they don’t have the microchip for it and they were supposed to be due in June so far no microchip has been called for me to put in my car so they did not tell me at the time of purchase this problem so this is why people are buying vehicles that they’re producing they’re not being told and they also try to get me to sign some kind of form which I think meant that I wasn’t going to get a microchip that I was agreeing to the fact that I shouldn’t have been in the car but I never signed that

I purchased a new Yukon Denali Feb 2022. As I was about to drive off (after signing papers, paying cash, etc) the salesman informed me a chip was missing. No where was that documented that I could find although chip is clearly missing as told. Of course when call GMC get a very vague generic response. GMC never again!
I have hit my trashcan in my street, waiting for trash pickup, twice because it sets lower than my Denali's hood and I do not see it. My fault? yes. But if I had my sensor microchips it would have warned me. GMC will get the bill for the body work after my chips arrive.

All of this is good reason for me to give up on getting a truck this year.
With all these constraints that seem never to end is making my decision of purchasing a new 2022 terrain denali is going to be on hold until next year in 2023 and hoping the chip shortage will be just a memory and I can get my new vehicle in a realistic time and with all the accessories working and and no retro fit issues at a later date . My local dealer tell me if I order a terrain I have less then a 5% chance of getting it it before year end I think it’s all crazy so hopefully 2023 year I can order and get the terrain Denali without any issues
As much as I want a new truck, the current pricing and incomplete features will make me keep my current truck until they get all this crap figured out.
I would honestly be surprised if things got sorted out before 2024 or 2025 at this point.
Microchips aren't going to magically appear, and prices are going to keep going up.
Ukraine is one of if not the worlds largest producer of neon gas which is crucial in making microchips.
First with covid, now the Russia attacks, things aren't going to get any better.
If you are in the market to buy this year or next, you should probably reserve your spot in line now.
I agree with KMR56. No way this gets back to "normal" in the next 2 years. This is gonna take a while. If you want or need a new vehicle I would order it now.
Wait until China starts their invasion of Taiwan... The world's largest chip maker and tech sector in the world. Not just the auto industry, but all tech companies will be impacted.
I don't see any proactive means being taken to stock up or preserve the industry from being part of China's main strategy for Taiwan takeover from this administration. In the meantime, US corporations and this gov't continue to feed China's economy with green manufacturing and anything electric batteries. Once the sh_t hits the fan, China is going to sanction us if we interfere with Taiwan and cut off critical medicines, precious metals, tech hardware and software, green production, exports to the US, and cut off selling into China.
I just see more and more dependency of China in this administration and corporations, just like gm, Apple, and such...

We can all thank corporate greed and Citizens United for the off -shoring of our supply chain. We have a looong way to go before this gets straightened out. In the mean time, enjoy the lack of availability and the price gouging.
I have been waiting for a new truck that was ordered last summer, built in the fall, and has been sitting in a field in Flint MI ever since. This is of no fault of my dealer but it seems crazy that they can’t get any info on it. I was able to pull up a picture of this world famous field that it was shipped to and couldn’t believe what I seen. These trucks are going to be shot with mice and things getting in them eating wires and things. I was told that I would get the chips later for the seats and steering wheel later when it was ordered. Does anybody have any idea what is really going on. They have ordered trucks way after mine that they are starting to receive now. I’m way down on a list to order a new one but this thing is going to be a year old and out dated by the time I get it.
We did receive my wife’s new Malibu the other day. It’s been so long I can’t remember when it was ordered. Someday they tell me it really will have heated seats. Really nice car though.
In April of 2019 I put a very large non refundable deposit on a C8 ZO6. I’m first in line, but we all know that worked.
We all know this is a crazy world that is out of GMs control but you think they could at least do a better job of informing the dealers so they could let there customers know what to expect.
Right now the dealers are getting by just fine with our cash flow of deposits, and the U Tubers are making money racing each other with info that they have no idea what they are talking about “but would you like to buy a money clip or T shirt”.
Sorry to drag is on for so long but not sure how much longer I can walk, my feet are getting sore

Race 57 speaks with some depth and knowledge. Granted it's hard to buy local & American but the long term alternative is either cheap China goods or democracy and freedoms as we all know it. Stay strong and walk right by it. It's just stuff. Our fathers and grandfather's would appreciate our resolve.
