The GM Authority Take

GMC Sierra sales during the fourth quarter of 2021 declined as did the whole segment. The lackluster performance is the direct result of the Professional Grade’s full-size pickup inventory being impacted by production hurdles throughout 2021 due to the ongoing global semiconductor microchip shortage. The circumstance is expected to ease later this year.

In addition, Sierra sales will undoubtedly see a boost thanks to the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 that debuted last fall. Highlights of the updated model include new exterior styling, a completely overhauled cabin, and powertrain improvements, as well as the addition of a range-topping Sierra Denali Ultimate plus the introduction of the all-new Sierra AT4X off-roader. The Sierra Denali Ultimate is GMC’s most luxurious pickup yet, while the Sierra AT4X is (mostly) GMC’s equivalent to the new Silverado ZR2. What’s more, GM Authority recently learned that GMC is already testing a next-level 2022 Sierra AT4X that could be even more geared toward off-road performance.

Although production of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra was also delayed, it is now in progress, having started in February and March.

In even bigger news, GM teased an upcoming electric GMC Sierra pickup at the end of last year. The electric GMC Sierra electric will be the third EV in the GMC’s lineup, after the GMC Hummer EV pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV. Just like the two Hummer EV model variants, the electric Sierra Denali will ride on GM’s BT1 platform while making use of the Ultium battery system and Ultium Drive motors.

Introduction of those models should boost sales for GMC since, perhaps surprisingly, 43 percent of pickup owners plan to own an electric truck in the next decade.

The future looks bright for GMC – a major profit center for General Motors – begins selling a broad range of intriguing models over the next couple of years.

  1. GMC in 4th place has been the case for some time now. RAM seems to be settling into second place which must disappoint GM. Chevrolet loosing share in nearly every segment since before the chip crisis is the most under-reported story in Detroit.
Barra keeps her focus on EVs while allowing all but Tahoe, Suburban and Corvette to loose sales in the most competitive climate in US auto history when even FCA could make a good vehicle.
