2022 Chevy Models Get New Microchip Shortage Constraints

The global microchip shortage has had a profound effect on the automotive industry, impacting automakers and resulting in widespread constraints. That includes General Motors, which has been forced to reduce the availability of certain features and prioritize production with regard to the allocation of available microchip supplies. Now, a variety of Chevy models are once again facing constraints due to the ongoing shortage.

Per an announcement made as of March 14th production, the Chevy vehicles facing constraints include the Chevy Blazer, Chevy Colorado, Chevy Equinox, Chevy Silverado 1500, Chevy Silverado HD, Chevy Suburban, Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Trailblazer, and Chevy Traverse.

Some of the features affected include the Heated Steering Wheel feature, Heated Front Seats, Heated Outboard Rear Seats, Rear Park Assist, and Front and Rear Park Assist. Many of these features have been under constraint previously due to the ongoing microchip shortage, as GM Authority has covered in the past.

Check out the table below for a more complete picture of the Chevy models and features currently under constraint:

A variety of factors have compounded the microchip shortage, including a spike in demand for electronics in conjunction with the COVID-19 pandemic, manufacturing shutdowns, the China-U.S. trade war, and other issues. Most recently, a deadly earthquake in Japan forced GM microchip supplier Renesas to halt production.

In response to the shortage, GM elected to prioritize production of its most popular and profitable models, namely its full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. What’s more, General Motors announced late last year that it was coordinating with seven major microchip suppliers to develop three new microcontroller families. The new microcontroller components are intended to reduce complexity and costs with regard to the latest automobile features, as well as create a more stable source of the components going forward.

The Biden Administration has also touted a $52 billion microchip production bill to boost domestic chip production and investment, as well as increase technology research capacity.

  1. Let’s go Brandon! He can fix anything and if he can’t, Camela will do it!

        1. You’re right – you can say what you want, when you want. That’s freedom, baby. Of course, I’m also free to kiss my dog after he licks his ass, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

          1. Pat nobody needs to explain to you why they say what they say on here thanks. What you choose to do to your dog is strictly your business and none of my concern.

            1. I’m afraid you’ve missed the point, my friend. You’re absolutely right – nobody has to explain anything they say. But if they say something ridiculous – like blaming Biden for the chip shortage – then they should be prepared for someone to call them out on it. Biden has as much to do with the chip shortage as I do with the price of gas. But, hey, why let facts get in the way of a good internet post?

              1. Pat again people can say what they want I’m sorry you have an issue with that. Take care my friend.

                1. Pat, Bacardi, et. al can also say what they want.

Pat’s point is a true principle; sometimes it’s better to stay quiet.

Bacardi’s asked a question (albeit an exaggerated one – not *everything* is political) that wasn’t actually answered: why is politics being brought up in an article about automotive constraints?

Given the reality of COVID, supply chain issues and constraints are driven by production shutdowns and bottlenecks; Biden and Harris or Trump/Pence or whomever else is in office cannot wave wands and fix these issues, even if they wanted to. When outbreaks occur, production is shut down or reduced to prevent virus spread.

                  1. The only thing I consider is people can say what they want and don’t need to explain themselves to anyone on here thank you. Have a good night.

              2. Biden has affected our everything. So, I am fine with blaming him. He is the biggest waste of a President we have ever had and that is just a fact, but at least Jimmy Carter won’t go down in that position Thanks to Biden

      2. Maybe because ever since Brandon and Camela took over the country has gone to hell!

        1. Right – because things were going so well under Donny. Just look at his accomplishments: causing an insurrection against the United States, lying about stolen elections, demanding that the Secretary of State in Georgia “find” the “missing” votes, kissing Vladimir Putin’s ass, recommending people inject themselves with disinfectant to fight off Covid, withholding aid from Ukraine unless they investigated his political opponent, flushing classified documents down the toilet (I mean, seriously, what kind of buffoon flushes documents down a toilet?), and serially lying to the American public about Covid. Man, those were the days, huh?

          2. Oh Pat embarrassing yourself as usual I see. A insurrection is not guards moving the barriers out of the way, he never demanded the secretary of Georgia to find anything look it up instead of the usual misinformation you spew on here, give me one example of him kissing putins behind? Sanctions existed under his presidency. He never recommended people use disinfectant look it up again instead of spewing the misinformation you have been a custom to on here. When did he ever lie to the public about covid? By the way more deaths in 21 then 20 in case you forgot. You disappoint me.

  2. Is this the comments about chip shortage? It seems I ran into a political battle. First, all politicians suck no matter what side they are on. Back to the chips… GM is like the politicians….excuse after excuse of why they produce junk. There, maybe Donny and Joey can work on a way to make this country proud to produce quality products. But then again, do Americans really want to work these days🤣. We are our own worse enemy and until we realize it then we will continue to destroy ourselves. Get a grip people.

  5. So it takes a microprocessor to turn on heated seats? Maybe they are relying a little bit too much on computers and less on actual switches (or solenoid operated switches).

  6. Any information about whether these features will be retrofitted? I ordered an RST suburban in February. It hasn’t been scheduled for production yet. If I understand the table correctly I’m looking at no heated steering wheel, no heated front seats, and no heated 2nd row seats. It’s a $75,000 vehicle. Jesus.

  8. I’m new to the site and I’ll try to stay with the agenda. I have a 21 LT 1500 that doesn’t have DFM and received a $50 credit off of MSRP. I’m happy with the way it runs and drives. I don’t know if DFM is to be installed later, but I think I prefer to keep it as is. I wondered about what others thought.

  9. When will the chips available for my 20022 silverado 1500 trail boss. i am supposed to have heated steering wheel and heated seats. I bought the truck on 9-28-2022. I paid for these features thinking they would be available by the time cold weather hits. I was wrong and my dealer has no idea when they might come in.

  10. I purchased a 22 chevy trailblazer lt on April of this year. I was told by the dealer I should have my heated seats chip by winter. I haven’t heard anything and no one seems to know anything. If can get an update on what’s going on that would be great.
