The fully refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is here, breaking cover with a long list of changes and updates over the preceding 2021 model year and pre-refresh Sierra 1500 Limited. Highlights include new exterior styling, a completely overhauled cabin, and powertrain improvements, as well as the addition of the AT4X off-roader and range-topping Sierra Denali Ultimate.
Let’s start outside, where we find the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 receives a new front end consisting of revisions to the front bumper, grille, and headlights. The new headlights house dual-projector LEDs and reshaped C-shaped lighting signatures, while animated lighting sequences activate when the driver is walking towards or away from the vehicle, as well as on vehicle start. The 2022 Sierra also offers new wheel designs for SLT and Denali trims, while three new optional exterior paint options (Titanium Rush Metallic, Dynamic Blue Metallic, Desert Sand Metallic) join the lineup.
One of the most important updates for the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is inside the cabin, where we find a completely overhauled cockpit design. The new interior addresses criticisms levied against the pickup since the introduction of the 2019 model year, while also incorporating a wealth of new technologies. Highlights here include an all-new 13.4-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as standard on SLE and above, plus a new center console, Electronic Precision Shift for models with front bucket seats (column shift available for models with a front bench seat), and standard power-adjustable steering column for up-level trims.
To note, all models in the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup are equipped with the new interior design, with the exception of the base-model GMC Sierra Pro (previously known simply as the “Sierra,” now renamed as the Pro trim level).
Further tech highlights include built-in Google compatibility standard on all models except Pro, as well as GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous drive system with trailering capabilities included as standard on 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate.
The powertrain lineup mirrors that of the fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine included as standard with 20-percent more torque, up to 420 pound-feet. Peak power ratings for the L3B are unchanged, rated at 310 horsepower, although trailering ratings get a boost to 9,600 pounds for two-wheel drive models and 9,300 pounds for four-wheel drive models.
Models equipped with the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax are also offered with the max tow package, which boosts max tow ratings to 13,200 pounds.
The rest of the powertrain lineup consists of the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine and naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine. The naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV3 gasoline engine and naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 gasoline engine are no longer offered.

IMO I really like the front end. The grill looks great. Everyone to their own I guess…
So on the regular denali it looks like we'll have to upgrade via extra packages for the multi pro tailgate, power assist steps and super cruise? That blows.
That's a great way to ruin a brand! Denali is no longer the best. 20 years of marketing no longer applicable
It's still a Denali, it's just taking the Ultimate package(available in all Denali's now) and making it its' own trim.
So for the regular Denali, we'll have to upgrade via packages to get the multi-pro tailgate, Super Cruise and the auto assist steps? That blows.
Interior is a little disappointing. I’m one of the few who liked the previous interior design. Climate controls are too small and seem out of the way. Headlight and 4WD controls are set too low. I also don’t like how the touch screen isn’t integrated into the dash for a clean look, but it seems that’s where the design trend is going.
The chrome (or blackout) trying to extend the grille into the hood gives it a subtle pig snout look. It's especially strong on the white AT4 where the grille has triple stacked nostrils both sides of the emblem. The elevation fixes this. I really like the body color upper lip on the Elevation grille. Tie that with the subtle satin chrome on the SLT and it really makes a fantastic front end. I can almost forgive the smiling bumper with that combination.
Unfortunately, the GM designers which ruined the front face of the latest Camaro (which helped sink the Camaro sales) was part of this new front smiley face design. Some parts of the new truck look good, but not the face IMO.
GMC and Chevrolet did the improvements people wanted. Last couple of years you did not hear GM management saying how great they were.. mostly quiet after Ram embarrassed GM showing off the new Ram.
Remember Chevrolet it self used to sell twice the number that Ram sold. Didn't need to include GMC sales to out sell RAM.
I have always bought GM pickup from the 60s on..
First impression when seeing the new pickup in Denali and AT4X trims wasn’t good. Like others, I’m not a fan of the ever enlarging grill sizes on the half ton trucks. But going onto the GMC site and seeing the Sierra in Elevation trim was a relief. Go down to the bottom of the gmc page to see it. The Elevation version has the top strip of the grill painted body color, and it truly transforms the look of the front end. It will be easy to have the top of the grill painted body color transforming the look of other trim levels.
I’m looking forward to the configurator going live to better compare pricing. I have been eyeing an AT4, and a 2021 built with options and the duramax is at the $60K mark. I’m hoping the 2022 model with a $61K starting price includes a lot more standard features along with the now standard diesel. But with the Elevation starting at $45.5K, and Duramax and Off road packages coming in at about $4K, that might be the one…
Agreed on the elevation being the nicest looking. I built an elevation on the 2021 configurator with Duramax and all the features I wanted and came in at around $55,000. I don't need a suede headliner and laser etched wood trim. Massaging seats sound good but the 3 minutes I spent sitting in one at a car show tells me it would be a forgotten feature very quickly. I need a truck, not a Bentley wannabe.
