This Is The Refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500

The fully refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is here, breaking cover with a long list of changes and updates over the preceding 2021 model year and pre-refresh Sierra 1500 Limited. Highlights include new exterior styling, a completely overhauled cabin, and powertrain improvements, as well as the addition of the AT4X off-roader and range-topping Sierra Denali Ultimate.

Let’s start outside, where we find the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 receives a new front end consisting of revisions to the front bumper, grille, and headlights. The new headlights house dual-projector LEDs and reshaped C-shaped lighting signatures, while animated lighting sequences activate when the driver is walking towards or away from the vehicle, as well as on vehicle start. The 2022 Sierra also offers new wheel designs for SLT and Denali trims, while three new optional exterior paint options (Titanium Rush Metallic, Dynamic Blue Metallic, Desert Sand Metallic) join the lineup.

One of the most important updates for the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is inside the cabin, where we find a completely overhauled cockpit design. The new interior addresses criticisms levied against the pickup since the introduction of the 2019 model year, while also incorporating a wealth of new technologies. Highlights here include an all-new 13.4-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as standard on SLE and above, plus a new center console, Electronic Precision Shift for models with front bucket seats (column shift available for models with a front bench seat), and standard power-adjustable steering column for up-level trims.

To note, all models in the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup are equipped with the new interior design, with the exception of the base-model GMC Sierra Pro (previously known simply as the “Sierra,” now renamed as the Pro trim level).

Further tech highlights include built-in Google compatibility standard on all models except Pro, as well as GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous drive system with trailering capabilities included as standard on 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate.

The powertrain lineup mirrors that of the fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine included as standard with 20-percent more torque, up to 420 pound-feet. Peak power ratings for the L3B are unchanged, rated at 310 horsepower, although trailering ratings get a boost to 9,600 pounds for two-wheel drive models and 9,300 pounds for four-wheel drive models.

Models equipped with the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax are also offered with the max tow package, which boosts max tow ratings to 13,200 pounds.

The rest of the powertrain lineup consists of the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine and naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine. The naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV3 gasoline engine and naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 gasoline engine are no longer offered.

  • I know that all of the pictures are preproduction but did anyone else notice that the dual exhaust is gone from the AT4X?

    • Has the dual exhaust but it’s hidden. If they left the exhaust visible, you risk ripping off the tips when off-roading. So you decide, what’s really important, a true off-roader or seeing the dual exhausts?

  • Ever since 2014 I've started out liking the more traditional style of the Sierra more than Silverado, but Silverado grows in me and I end up liking it more over the long haul. Same is true with these 2022 updates.
But I do like the dash layout more in the Silverado.

Very nice update, exterior evolved a great looking truck. Doesn't change my.mind though, I'll be buying a 2022 Silverado duramax RST/LTZ

  • The front looks like a terrain and that's not a good thing. It's an awkward smile. Like he has to poop but he is holding it and it kind of feels good, but it kind of hurts.

Last good looking GMC was the k2xx Sierra.

    • I agree with your smile comment. I immediately noticed that and it's the only part I don't like. It gives the bumper a weird bulge as it wraps into the fender. They stuck a vent(?) into that bulge that seems like an afterthought. If it had resolved at the bottom of the grille to make the grill flush with the bumper it might have looked cleaner? Who knows. I'm curious to see it in person to see if it is as bad as the terrain. Otherwise I love the new headlights. They seem tighter and cleaner. The grille blades seem thinned out which makes the chrome grilles less in your face. This grille doesn't overwhelm the front.

  • I don’t see why it won’t sale.. they fixed the problems that plagued the 2019 model. Exterior didn’t needed to be touched as much. They just need to offer a supercharged AT4X and ZR2 period. This is a great truck inside and out.

Ram kept the same body style for 10 years before they did a real refresh. They just updated the truck throughout the years. If GM did that with there truck they could keep it another 5 years. For me, they have the best looking trucks out there, and then the Ram will be after them.

Whoever mentioned the Rivian getting some of the market share. I don’t believe they share the same demographic. Rivian will probably steal more market share from Tesla buyers than GMC Sierra buyers.

With that being said, the GMC Hummer will be a great act to follow for other automakers. My only compaint is that it’s 110,000 for the one everyone wants.

Kind of anticipating GM’s electric Silverado and Sierra offer. Going to be hard getting used to no rumble though, not gonna lie.

    • Sell* excuse me for my spelling.

I’m gonna say it again. When it comes to looks the GM twins has a winner. Now with a great interior. There is t much to complain about. Other than offering an LT4 in the ZR2 and AT4X. I believe the majority of unbiased people would agree that this is a good truck. Best look, now better interior, and best features. Only lacking a supercharger option.

    • Rivian isn't stealing sales from any truck producer. From BMW? Probably. I agree on that 100%.

Ditto on ram. In not impressed at all with the current ram. The frame, chassis and engine all date back from 2009. It was incredible back then, bit it's just a bunch of lipstick on a pig now. It needs new bones, muscles and heart. The only 2 things ram has going for them is 1, price 2, well not anymore but their interiors. Nothing else. Heck I wasn't even looking Into them with the 2019 refresh for those afformentioned reasons.

      • Rivian will get Tesla, Land Rover, Lexus, customers, and a few here and there from the big 3. Rivian is in the right place, at he right time, and with the right product. Talking to people who have test drove the R1T, Rivian has a winner, and is best in class in many ways. If not for the Maverick, the R1T would be the undisputed truck of the year. HummerEv is too expensive to win that award, and appeals to too small a market, but also an amazing truck, maybe the most amazing in many ways.

      • The same stuff you're on, as said it seems the main complaint for the new one is price ( don't forget the base $80k or so 1500 Big Horn, TRX, or F150 Raptor, Platinum, King Ranch, etc) suddenly many "GM fans " here is recommending the other guys. So said good job GMC, now pass the smoke along...

  • The heck? That front end is hideous. Interior looks great. GM changed the the exterior for the sake of change without thinking it through: THAT hasn't changed.

  • The chrome "upper bumper" on the Elevation and lesser models, but then having the grill and lower bumper being of a different finish doesn't sit well with me.

  • The front end designer must be fired. Sierra was the best looking truck, now it passed the trophy for the RAM.

  • I am not clear about the dash. From the pictures released, it looks like the Denali and AT4X at least will get a dash that is basically the same as the Yukon Denali.

So, what will the SLE/Elevation dash look like? Will it be the same as the Chevy? The same as the Denali? Will the dash you get be different if you have buckets or bench?

I am assuming that the Pro will get the previous dash.

    • From the article:
"To note, all models in the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup are equipped with the new interior design, with the exception of the base-model GMC Sierra Pro"

    • Yukon Denali shares the same dash as the current Sierra Denali. The dash on these 2022 Sierra Denalis are different.
