No 2022 GMC Terrain Units Were Built Between June And November 2021

Production of the 2022 GMC Terrain was offline between June and November of the 2021 calendar year, with very few units of the crossover SUV currently available on dealer lots.

The GM San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico is the only facility that builds the GMC Terrain crossover. At present, dealer inventory for the 2022 GMC Terrain is extremely low, with the only models available being SLE and SLT trim levels as a tiered rollout was planned, with AT4 and Denali production having started on the week of January 10th, 2022.

Production of the 2022 GMC Terrain has been disrupted multiple times over the past year due to the ongoing global microchip shortage, with the production restart date pushed back on several occasions before getting back on track on the week of November 1st. As a result, available vehicle inventory and sales have both been deeply impacted.

With regard to sales, General Motors sold just 47,488 units of the GMC Terrain through the 2021 calendar year, a decrease of 44.79 percent as compared to the 86,020 units sold the year prior.

As a reminder, the 2022 GMC Terrain introduces a model refresh for the nameplate, arriving as the fifth model year of the second-generation vehicle. The Terrain was originally slated to receive a model refresh for the 2021 model year, but due to complications arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, the refresh was delayed by a year.

Motivation is derived exclusively from the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX gasoline engine, which is rated at 170 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 203 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm. A GM nine-speed automatic transmission is on hand to harness output, with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive on board to put it to the ground.

Under the skin, the 2022 GMC Terrain rides on the GM D2 platform, as shared with the second-generation Chevy Cruze, third-generation Chevy Equinox, and first-generation Buick Envision, among others.

  • All of the chips are going to fullsize trucks and SUVs GM is not concerned about these customers.
This will come back to bite big time as customers move into other brand that have lots of product in this category , they will be very hard to get back . Sure hope the FS truck market never changes or Mary will be in big time trouble.

  • My 22 Terrain is in transit to my dealer now. I should be taking delivery next week. I’ll have to check the door sticker to see when it was built. I can’t believe this was sitting around somewhere since June.

  • I guess this segment in there line up is not important to gm I guess they will notice when future customers look elsewhere and purchase a different brand then gm will wake up by that time it will be to late hearing about terrains Being built but sitting around since the summer of 2021 not a good ! I know they were missing parts because of the supply chain but now we’re in Jan 2022 gm has to be better then this

  • If a GM consumer has an inkling of knowledge on these CUV's, they will pass. My wife has a '19 Terrain Denali with the 2.0L Turbo. We are going to trade it in sooner than later, but I will not purchase another Terrain Denali, since they no longer offer the 2.0L Turbo. Why pay ~$8-10k more for a Denali, when GM no longer offers the Denali engine? We are going to purchase a Cadillac XT4 Premium Luxury instead.

Professional Grade? No. Extremely embarrassing? Yes.

BTW, her '19 Denali has been fantastic and we both believe that it is "better" than her '16 BMW X1M. The fit and finish is superb, the 2.0L Turbo really runs and the materials GM used are top notch. If you're in the market for a Terrain Denali, make certain it has the 2.0L Turbo.

    • Thanks for the info really wanted to order a 2022. GMC Terrain Denali but no 2.0! No thanks The 2.0 l engine is a great engine but it’s beyond on me why gm dropped the 2.0 in the terrain Denali could understand other trim levels but at least offer it on a denali trim . I guess Terrain Denali buyers either will step up to Cadillac with 2.0 or other brands !!! My money is on other brands !!!

  • I don't think this will hurt GM, nobody is very loyal to brands anymore. The only true loyal ones are truck buyers. The automotive market keeps changing. I have friends who are all over the place with cars and Cuv's but with trucks they are very loyal to a brand.

  • The chip excuse has gotten old and I, for one, don't buy it. Thousands of auto workers idle? Why is the media not reporting this? Empty car lots for over a year!? Ridiculous! There is something more sinister going on that is being kept from the world. Could it be someone is going to make billions in EV sales and a political party gets votes (and most likely has already purchased the related stocks) on this so the market is being manipulated by the alleged "chip shortage"? How about the poor little kids in Africa that mine the lithium? EV'ers are fine with that as long as they "save the world". Just sinful. There is still a fortune to be had in automobiles even if they are foolishly going EV. (Can America say "brown outs just like in California"? America does not have the electrical infrastructure to meet the future demand for electricity. Good luck charging the cars when your grid goes down). This is all out of our control and huge money plays our cards. PS I will keep my current truck forever - no new vehicles or no EV's for me! Good luck America!

          • I think those that get the connection understand my original comment and it was those that my post was directed to. If you don't get the connection it's like explaining a joke after it was told- it's no longer funny.
I will just give some hints or suggestions so that you can connect the dots. Times change & hopefully for the better & governments have the job of stewardship for the future, especially true for a capitalistic economy. Capitalism needs strong regulations because the only charge made to CEO's & their boards- is to make a profit. If they accomplish this they are successful. They can cut down trees, redirect rivers & streams, deposit waste (air & water) & add chemicals to eatables for preservation in order to enhance their profits. We all understand that.
Governments (some better than others) keep a watchful eye on that which is harmful to humans but more important to the planet. Governments rely on scientist to help make the call. When the situation becomes a dire emergency the best of us react ASAP others not so much for ex- I believe Brazil is still cutting down the Rain Forest as we speak all in the name of jobs needed for a growth economy. The cigarette reference was used to illustrate how one of America's largest industries was eventually dissolved due to the medical science linking smoking & cancer. To give an automobile example you may not be old enough to remember the hue & cry made by the public ( & the auto media) when the seat belt laws were passed - then for heavens sake - shoulder harnesses!! Will Big Brother never cease.
America adjusted new jobs were created in education & medical & new crops were planted peanuts & cotton to make up for the loss & then some. Now we have climate change-

          • Glen that has to be the best deflection I have ever read straying from our debate. You completely ignored the fact that most lithium is mined in barbaric conditions by small groups in the Congo, with no PPE, including children, not with heavy equipment but by hand. I guess that doesn’t matter to you. The support information is out there from reliable sources if you do care, please, dig a little deeper. I saw this exposed by 60 Minutes years ago and found a very sad situation of human exploitation. Your point about governments - China deems it necessary to have slave labor to make NBA stars a fortune while sucking money from the world (to build a deep water navy, has two operational stealth fighters and hypersonic, maneuverable weapons on our dime by pure coincidence. That’s another major topic). I’d debate that but that is really staying from the original topic.
My point earlier is that EVs are not sustainable or practical for the long term. Lithium supply chains, electrical grids and types of power generation will all come at an unfathomable cost, it will never be reliable and it not driven by the majority of customers. That is not a positive business outlook for any car company but the government is pushing it ignoring undoubtedly questionable merits.
I am a proponent of hydrogen vehicles and think, like E85, EVs are politically convenient with the unspoken byproduct of killing of all life at the Mississippi delta. (The fertilizer to grow all that corn dumped tons of fertilizer in Ole Miss and it when down river). I believe EVs are politically convenient, just like E85, but will come at an exorbitant cost where people won’t be able to afford cars. EVs are way more expensive than ICE cars so the cost ratio is already indicative of the future. When Obama said he was going to change this country, he wasn’t kidding.

Lastly, I remember seat belts, shoulder belts, glass headlamps to plastic, unleaded to leaded gas, etc. I’m a boomer, too.

          • Leaded gas to unleaded to be correct- but I don't feel obligated to answer each & every objection you have for eliminating ICE for electric because this will be the job of the public through their elected officials. The goal is to improve the environment as we make the changes. You have already concluded it can't be done.
You may be right & we may move to an alternate source (as you suggested) but let's let those with more knowledge than us make the call. But one thing we do know the planet needs to reduce it's carbon footprint.
Incidentally, I believe the mining of Lithium is mostly done in South America.

    • Little kids in Africa mine diamonds not lithium

Lithium is mined either through good old fashion strip mining or flooding salt flats with water then wanting for the water to evaporate to get the lithium . Either way no environmentally friendly .

The chip shortage is real .

  • This disruption will effect brand loyalty. There are folks who will buy a Mazda or Nissan and like it, and then are customers lost forever. Nox and Terrain represent GM's largest middle class volume & The General can not forever only survive on Truck/body on frame SUV sales.
GM does offer too many versions of the same vehicle: Nox, Terrain, Envision being an example, with noneholding a commanding industry lead & the company only dominate due to the sum of three product lines while rivals like Toyota and Honda lead with one and save a ton on dealers/marketing.
Got to wonder what GM will look like in 10 years when technology laden EVs are the norm? I really hope they just use GM or GMC label globally (outside Americas and China) instead of so many entries all leading in different regions.

    • You don't seem to understand trim levels and price. Envision and XT4 have bigger engine more standard and optional equipment than the lower Nox and Terrain. Toyota and Honda have Acura and Lexus. Smarten up.

  • Ordered '22 Terrain Denali June 2, 2021, just got build date of "week of March 14". Actual delivery wil probably be 4 to 6 weeks after that. Looks like we'll be getting a new, one year old vehicle. Wife doesn't care about 2.0 litre, but seat and steeering wheel heaters better be in there or ready for addition later when pc boards with chips are available!

  • Dropping the 2.0 on the Denali is a huge miss too much upcharge for too little in return. Just shift to the Buick Envision with the 2.0 and a new platform sold on the same lots.

    • For some reason this will not allow me to post. If you care for the truth google or ask Siri for info on child labor in lithium mining. You’ll find many sources that prove children are mining lithium (cobalt). Do it if the truth matters or just stick your head back in the sand. I can’t debate falsehoods.
