This Is The Refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500

The fully refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is here, breaking cover with a long list of changes and updates over the preceding 2021 model year and pre-refresh Sierra 1500 Limited. Highlights include new exterior styling, a completely overhauled cabin, and powertrain improvements, as well as the addition of the AT4X off-roader and range-topping Sierra Denali Ultimate.

Let’s start outside, where we find the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 receives a new front end consisting of revisions to the front bumper, grille, and headlights. The new headlights house dual-projector LEDs and reshaped C-shaped lighting signatures, while animated lighting sequences activate when the driver is walking towards or away from the vehicle, as well as on vehicle start. The 2022 Sierra also offers new wheel designs for SLT and Denali trims, while three new optional exterior paint options (Titanium Rush Metallic, Dynamic Blue Metallic, Desert Sand Metallic) join the lineup.

One of the most important updates for the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is inside the cabin, where we find a completely overhauled cockpit design. The new interior addresses criticisms levied against the pickup since the introduction of the 2019 model year, while also incorporating a wealth of new technologies. Highlights here include an all-new 13.4-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as standard on SLE and above, plus a new center console, Electronic Precision Shift for models with front bucket seats (column shift available for models with a front bench seat), and standard power-adjustable steering column for up-level trims.

To note, all models in the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 lineup are equipped with the new interior design, with the exception of the base-model GMC Sierra Pro (previously known simply as the “Sierra,” now renamed as the Pro trim level).

Further tech highlights include built-in Google compatibility standard on all models except Pro, as well as GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous drive system with trailering capabilities included as standard on 2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate.

The powertrain lineup mirrors that of the fully refreshed 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, with the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine included as standard with 20-percent more torque, up to 420 pound-feet. Peak power ratings for the L3B are unchanged, rated at 310 horsepower, although trailering ratings get a boost to 9,600 pounds for two-wheel drive models and 9,300 pounds for four-wheel drive models.

Models equipped with the 3.0L I6 LM2 turbodiesel Duramax are also offered with the max tow package, which boosts max tow ratings to 13,200 pounds.

The rest of the powertrain lineup consists of the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine and naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine. The naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV3 gasoline engine and naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L82 gasoline engine are no longer offered.

The fully refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is slated to hit dealers in Q1 of the 2022 calendar year. Pricing (including destination charge) starts at:

  • $32,495 for Sierra Pro
  • $43,895 for SLE

    • Who cares about the grille? The statement in the article above about the 3.0L is available with the max towing option and can tow up to 13,200 lbs is completely wrong. I chatted with two different GMC agents yesterday and they both told me the most the 3.0L is rated to tow is 8,800 lbs. They need to get their facts straight.

      • No it's correct! However, it depends on the Trim. You can get "UP TO" 13,200 lbs of towing, if it isn't the AT4/AT4X.

        https://www.gmc.com/future-vehicles/2022-sierra

      • The GMC agents are mistaken or misunderstood your question. The current 2021 is rated at 8,800 lbs max. The new 2022 has been adjusted to allow up to 13,200 lbs depending on trim level. As Nebula correctly mentioned the AT4 and AT4X have a lower towing capacity.

    • The new grill looks too big in relation to the the size of this truck. If I were to get one, it would have to be with body color trim around grill. Chrome is just too overpowering.

  • Interior looks good. Fire the team in charge of the exterior.

No matter what, they always manage to mess something up.

    • Of course you do you are a fanboy you praise everything they do. Everyone here knows what to expect from you.

      • It is true... Nebula and C8.R are both ridiculous in their defense of GM, not objective at all. I agree with Nebula here though, the Sierra's look better then Silverado's in exterior design, and the new interior is just what the doctor ordered, not perfect, but good enough to at least compete.

  • Here’s what I took away:

Bad: 75k for AT4X (probably ZR2 as well)

Good: Leather optional in elevation trim

    • Bad:can we get a picture of the STL and SLE trims? Some of us can't afford a Denali or AT4X. I'm more excited to see the trims Im in the market for, though I do like the new grill shape. I wasn't the biggest fan of the 2019 Nissan croma-titan look.

    • Think about this... If GM showed the new trucks which looked better and had more features and priced them competitive with the outgoing models what do you think would happen to current sales? So they price the new models high to make the outgoing models look cheap, and get people to keep buying for the next 6 months before these hit the market. The market will eventually set the price for the new models, likely lower than what GM showed last night.

  • Awesome Improvement on the interior, the front, kinda looks okay, I like the current gen. This one looks like that awful concept on GMDesign instagram.

Otherwise it’s a grand slam….materials wise and interior wise. But a strike on the $80k PRICE TAG?!? The Rivian will surely eat away at that market share, along with the new hummer which at this point is affordable when compared to this truck.

The Escalade is only $5k more…practically same bed length….

The AT4x??? Nothing really different than the ZR2, like not even higher figures other than $….

  • I have a buddy back in Illinois who was for years a die-hard Chevy guy (yes, I said Chevy but the GMC is near identical). In fact, he was such a Chevy guy that he got really upset with me one time when I said that I like the Ram better. Now fast forward 4 years to now. He's now owned a Ram for just under 4 years. He called me the other day asking my opinion about the market and if he should get a new truck or wait. I gave him my thoughts and then asked him Chevy or another Ram. His response? Ram. The Chevy just can't cut it. Granted, he's looked at 2021 models Chevy's and compared to the 2021 Ram, so maybe if he looked at a 2022 he would change his mind? Don't know, but my point is that both Ram and Ford are making GM's truck life a living hell.

      • John: don't pay attention to the stupid up/down votes. This isn't Facebook! haha. And you are right, it is true.

And as you can see from Alex's and Mayor Bill's comments, there's just too many people on here who either are just here to hate on GM or they will defend GM at any costs. Personally I find that to be quite silly and will say what I know to be true or what I feel if it's my opinion. It shouldn't matter that I am a huge fan of GM and especially Cadillac! If Ram (in this case) is the better truck, admit it. I truly feel Chevy and GMC have such a long way to go just to catch up to Ford and Ram and this refresh will get them close. But then those two will most likely jump ahead in another year or two again.

        • Other than I disagree that 100% RAM is better. Please explain why you think RAM is better. I'm a power train guy, and do use my truck off road on my cattle farm in the Appalachian Foothills and beat it all to heck. If you ask me, 5.3 or hemi? 5.3 all the way! It's low end torque is much better, doesnt need premium fuel to get it's power and I don't feel like fishing out extra money for Ford aluminum trashcan that guzzles gas while working and will need it's turbos overhauled at 3000 engine hours. GM is the best truck out there -for me. Mopars are good street V8's but I have yet to find an engine that outworks a SBC. So don't trash my Chevy, and if you want to, I'll show you what a real truck is made of.

          • Jake: The nice thing about sites like this is that we can and do give our opinions. Are facts important? Absolutely. But let's admit here that most of what we (all) say on here is opinion. In my words above yours, I say "If the Ram is the better truck". I clearly did NOT say Ram IS the better truck. Huge difference. My point was simply to say that it should not matter if you are a GM fan, a Ford fan or a Ram fan. If you know one truck is better, just admit it. That doesn't mean that you much go buy one.

As for the 5.3 vs the hemi? Sounds to me like opinion again. I'm sure I could find hundreds of people who would say the hemi is the better engine. Personally, I'd take the hemi over the 5.3, but I do like the 5.3. Now, why do I feel the Ram is the better truck?
            1. Exterior styling.
            2. Interior design/styling.
            3. Ride and refinement.
            4. Comparable engines if not better.
            5. Features and content.

But if you disagree, fine. But please don't give veiled threats on here because you "think" I'm trashing your Chevy. How childish at best.

          • He didn’t trash “your Chevy” he was saying what he told his friend. And the idiotic comment of If YoU wAnT tO iLl ShOw YoU wHaT a ReAl TrUcK iS mAdE oF, does nothing but show your age.

          • He can’t Dan that doesn’t go with the narrative he wants to push. He would have to admit he is wrong and that’s not possible for a person like him.

        • Wait for the lower trims before I decide. Industry problem but if to get a nice truck is 70k+ and the lower price ones are dull stripped models then a hard no.

    • You get more features and options with the Ram for your money. I will be heading that way in 13 months when the lease is up on my TrailBoss.

    • Dan, your story might have been cool a year or two ago but times change as have the trucks. This article is about the refresh... which shuts down the narrative of your tale.

      • Ford Guy. That's not true. I clearly said in my comment that he's looking at the 2021 and not the 2022, so maybe that would make a difference. But even though, I'd still take the Ram over even this refreshed 2022.

      • Found on road dead guy you don’t say this is about the refresh? How could anyone tell without you pointing that out? I mean it just says that in the description and the pictures are obviously of a truck that is not on the street now. Ram was in 3rd place for how many decades? And when I say 3rd place like not even close to catching 2nd now look at them. Funny thing is nobody needs to defend anything let the numbers do the talking. Ram must be doing something right to gain as much as they have and they will continue to gain.

        • Paul, you are gullible at best. Separate out sales of the Ram Classics from the new model and that shatters your 'Ram is in second because the new truck is sooooo much better' lie.

Here's an ancient pro tip for ya: "Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue."

          • I’m just glad you are here to point out this article is about the refresh nobody would of known without you saying that. Numbers are numbers my friend I’m sorry you don’t like that but unfortunately you don’t get to dictate how that works now do you?

          • If ignoring the point I made makes you feel better, by all means publicly confirm my assertion you are gullible.

          • Lol how can you talk about how ram combines sales when ford does the exact the same. The f150, 250, 350, 450 plus fleet plus hd that’s how ford has that record. Also people aren’t stupid here everyone knows this is about the refresh that’s why the headline says it.

          • They are all F-series are they not? Oh and Ford is not selling its last generation (dirt cheap) simultaneously with the new one and attributing the total sales to the new one. That's disingenuous but it makes fanbois (like Paul) feel good. If it makes you feel better I agree sales of GM's duo should be combined as they are essentially the same engineering in different wrappers... in which case GM does sell the most.

    • Chevy /GMC full size pickups outsold the F-150 and Ram in 2020, and have so far in 2021 also. Some living hell!

  • Quick first impression:

Beautiful truck, but to me the appearance seems to be targeting an older demographic—something your grandpa would drive, and that’s not said with any disrespect.

The refreshed Chevy Silverado is the complete opposite. Looks much more geared toward a younger audience. Appearance is more aggressive, sporty and unpolished.

Interiors are basically identical, but based on the exterior, I’d have to choose the Chevy. Maybe once I see it in-person my opinion will change.

    • I tend to disagree, the interior of the GMC is more simplistic, less lines and details, what do younger sophisticated buyers want? Who buys Tesla's ?

The new Silverado interior looks cluttered, and like they were trying to fit too many details in. This to me appeals to older buyers who see more detail as more value.

Younger people think there is beauty in simplicity, look at modern houses? Look like a box of frosted flakes kicked over on its side, and young sophisticated buyer suck them up as fast as they can be built.

  • No pano roof still. I know its not for everyone but needs to be an available option for 22... Find it odd how little exterior difference there is between the AT4X and AT4. Basically wheel color and badges. The ZR2 at least looks different and has increased approach angles. Should have been more distinction.

    • I'm no engineer, but from what I've heard, GM would need to basically redesign the structure of the truck in order to allow for a full panoramic sunroof. Since this is only a refresh, GM wouldn't go to those lengths. The Silverado EV is confirmed to have a glass roof, and I think it's safe to say the 2025 ICE redesign will also have a glass roof or pano sunroof.

      • The redesign is coming late 2025, as a 2026 model... I think the modern trend is full glass roofs, with no opening, that is what the Silverado and Sierra EV's will have.
