General Motors has extended production downtime of the Chevy Camaro, Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5 at the Lansing Grand River Assembly plant until October 4th.
Production of the Chevy Camaro, along with the 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, was originally set to return on September 27th, however persistent chip allocation problems have now pushed the restart date back to the October 4th. Production of the regular Cadillac CT4 and Cadillac CT5 will also return on October 4th, although this was always the restart date set by GM for the two luxury sedans.
GM halted production of the Chevy Camaro and two Blackwing performance sedans at the Grand River plant on September 13th. The standard versions of the CT5 and CT4 have not been produced since the Grand River plant was first shut down on May 10th.
GM has been grappling with a shortage of semiconductor chips throughout 2021, which has hampered the automaker’s production output and forced it to temporarily idle several of its North American plants. The automaker is prioritizing its chips for its most popular and profitable vehicles, which include full-size trucks like the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra, as well as its line of full-size SUVs. Despite its best efforts, GM has already lost production of around 800,000 vehicles so far this year, making it one of the hardest-hit automakers by the chip shortage.
The Lansing Grand River plant is a 3.4 million-square-foot facility that sits on 111 acres of land in central Michigan. The assembly plant employs 1,221 hourly workers and 196 salaried workers for a total workforce size of 1,417. Workers there are represented by UAW Local 652.
While GM has said it expects the chip supply to stabilize in 2022, it could be a while before the automaker’s production output returns to pre-pandemic levels.

So with all these plants being shut down, I assume these employees are not getting paid. When there aren't any vehicles being produced, does Mary still get her salary?
From what I’ve read, they (generally, all auto makers) are still building the SUVs & high demand crossover models.
I’m looking at the profit margins & stock prices for GM & Ford- doesn’t seem like they’re hurting over the chip shortages..
You know she will they list her as the top 100 Dimwits running this country.. I think with her salary she should buy back all the BOLTs that were made.. So she can have a fire sale.. LOL. It would be nice to see the Lansing Grand River Plant start up again. We don't need a fleet of over priced Trucks sitting around, when people have ordered cars they want...
Mary Barra is running this company into bankruptcy. When are the dim-wit shareholders going to replace her? I guess their hoping for another government bail out. Barra couldn’t run a woman’s shoe store let only GM. What a shame, destroying a historic American company much like the imbecile Democratic's doing the same to this country.
How is she running it into bankruptcy? You think this chip shortage is her fault? Its a oversight by all industries and the US government relying on foreign products. You think the car shortage is bad, computers, printers, monitors are in short supply. This wont' be solved until Intel and Apple get plants built and up and running by 2023. The other problems is we don't have enough people working at the ports to unload the shipments and then deliver them because Biden keeps giving people free money. That gravy train needs to stop.
1 Billion for fixing all the Bolts can't be very good for the bottom line. But go ahead and keep pushing electric vehicles, especially in my state where we have power outages cause they cant handle the strain. On a side note the shortage of labor is going to get worst because people are getting canned for not getting the jab. It's going to get really bad this year.
They are working on getting some of the Money back from LG. If anything GM is doing the right thing and is going to replace all the bolt batteries once they have a fix. 1 billion will be written as a loss if not. That's how the tax codes work.
This does little to instill confidence in GMs "all electric future" BS
$1billion would go a long way to retool plants like Fairfax and Orion to build vehicles that actually sell like the Equinox, Blazer, Envision, Trailblazer, etc.
Could you imagine what a billion dollar investment would do for the Malibu or Equinox? No way the Bolt will ever bring in what has already been spent or will be spent trying to save it. Just buy them all back and never mention the Bolt again.
Retool and still have the same problem of no microchips. BTW, all mighty Toyota is cutting 500k or so vehicles starting next quarter because no microchips..
Where did he say anything about Toyota?
The part he mentioned that retooling a factory mean instant chip production.
Sorry nobody but you mentions Toyota but you
Ok 👌..
Just don’t make stuff up next time is all. 👉👌
Ok 🐓🍭
Right I’m the 🐓 🍭 because I just made up a false statement gotcha
USA 1: What you just said is a darn great argument for the infrastructure package we so desperately need. You can thank the nearly all white boys in red for doing everything they can to destroy that infrastructure package only because they don't want to be part of progress. All that as that same package is hugely popular with the general public across the country.
Nearly all white boys? The infrastructure package would be pass if it was actually for infrastructure not all the other bs and only 5% for that. But by all means who cares keep passing trillion dollar packages it’s just debt who cares.
Lol 👍
Lol 🍆
^^ How childish. I never would have thought that someone would stoop so low as to use my name falsely. This will be reported.
Mad because the original point was funny..
My friend do you know anything about the infrastructure package? Dan here doesn’t seem to or can’t answer the man above who said why it hasent passed yet. So I ask you do you have any idea what is in it?
Nathan: It hasn't passed yet because there are 2 very timid Democrats who are apparently afraid of the lunatics on the right. Add them to the entire deranged GOP (certainly is NOT the party I used to belong to) and there's your answer as to why it has not passed yet. You have Moscow Mitch (the self proclaimed grim reaper) who won't allow anything to pass for the American people unless it's what will benefit him personally.
So that’s a no right? You don’t know what is in the package or why it has received so much criticism. And I’m sorry but I didn’t realize any politician does anything unless it benefits themselves.
Lol it’s hilarious seeing a white boy talk about people can thank other white boys for the issues.
Mary Barra has been CEO since 2013 and Chevrolet is on the verge of bankruptcy for the second time. And the chip shortage is her responsibility because it is a researchable fact that because the automakers thought the pandemic was going to cause a large stoppage of auto sales they didn’t order the chips from the manufacturers, that’s a poor business decision and that’s on her. To date GM has lost out on the sales of over 800,000 vehicles. She needs to be replaced.
Chevrolet is a division under GM. It’s near impossible for it to declare bankruptcy. The fact that you can’t even get a basic detail like that correct makes all of the “research” you claim you’ve done about how the Mary Barra is responsible for a world wide shortage of semi-conductors, highly suspect.
Andy, wow you couldn’t figure out that by saying Chevrolet is on the verge of bankruptcy I meant GM? You’re a real rocket scientist aren’t you. GM is currently 109 billion, yeah B for billion in debt. And I never said Mary Barra was responsible for a worldwide chip shortage you imbecile, she’s responsible for not ordering the necessary chips for the products of the company she’s CEO of. They missed out on producing over 800,000 vehicles. Learn to read before making ignorant comments. I’ve owned GM products all my life and it’s aggravating to see this company mismanaged the way it is.
I’m going to call out hypocrisy and thinly veiled misogyny when I see it.
Barra is far from the worst GM CEO when you consider the 70s through the early 2000s when the company was slowly rotting from the inside with out-of-control bureaucracy, shameful badge-engineering, lackluster products with abysmal build-quality, and creating whole new brands because the existing ones had such poor reputations.
Were there bright spots? Yes but the company could not keep up with German and Japanese competitors and refused to shift it’s strategy until it was far too late.
The UAW was always blamed but the buck stops with management.
The commenters on this website make it sound like Barra is running the company into the ground when the opposite is true. It’s undeniable that she is the first CEO in decades at GM with a solid long-term strategy towards growth and not just keeping up with whatever Ford does.
Is she perfect? Absolutely not. But, it’s not some coincidence that investors like what they see coming from her management style and strategies to grow the company. They have confidence in her and aren’t held back by some dated notion that a woman can’t successfully run a car company.
Do you always suck off people in the comments who say anything about Barra?
I’m assuming this is directed toward me so I’ll bite:
There are Barra comments in nearly every article on this site. It’s shocking, the amount of disgusting bile Barra and other female executives receive on this website.
I realize that many of the comments are just trolling for engagement but many others show their unhinged hatred for women in positions of power where they blame those women for, not only things that happen in GM, but the industry at large.
The fact that this site does nothing to address that kind of behavior in the comment sections shows that it doesn’t care or is actively supporting that rhetoric.
Your assuming? Follow the line it’s obviously leads to your comment so yes it is directed towards you. Again I ask do you always suck people off in the comments when it comes to barra? Stop with your bs of saying people are showing hatred because a women is in power you sound like a fool.
You don’t like it go read articles somewhere else. Do you come here to read articles or read what people are saying in the comments? How about you just read your article and move on.
Why should I leave if I’m not the problem?
Also, no one is forcing you to read or respond to my comments.
No one is forcing you to read the comments. Are you here to read the articles or the comments?
It was the “suck off people” comment that made me question. You clearly don’t understand how that phrase should be applied when attempting to insult people.”
Andy this is not complicated at all. She is the ceo it doesn’t matter if it is right or not that she catches all the blame she’s the ceo. And my personally opinion I think it’s sad you bring her gender into this and I think it takes away from her as a ceo how you have to constantly point that out I have seen you do the same thing in plenty of articles on here. Yes men get criticized to for example the new iphone 13 have you not seen all the comments directed towards Tim Cook since it was unveiled this week? People have been slamming him for not making many improvements. Is it all on him no but he is the ceo.
I’m sure the argument of me unfairly bringing gender into this would have worked had I and so many others not repeatedly seen frequent comments here mocking her physical appearance or complaining that she’s hiring too many women or being paid too much. Just to name a few.
A person doesn’t have to literally say they think less of women if they exhibit behavior that broadcasts that thought for the world to see.
Yes, a CEO is ultimately responsible for the goings on within GM. The Bolt recall has been pretty disastrous and GM will have to think twice before putting that much faith into a vendor that builds such a critical component. However, placing the blame on her for not stockpiling semi-conductors when few other automakers did Is ridiculous and is creating a fault where one doesn’t exist.
She is being paid to much my friend she is a ceo of an auto company and made $23.7 million last year that is absurd I don’t care if you get a white man black man or any other color or gender that is a ridiculous salary. Also this is gm authority I also read things on other manufacturers Ford, dodge, all of them and trust me there ceo are getting bashed for the mishandle of chips also people just don’t bring it up here because the articles are about gm but if you go look at Ford authority and find an article about there ceo you will see the same.
What is going on in this comment thread? Good grief I have never seen so many people supporting these high ranking corporate pricks you people are a joke. Screw all your corporate masters support the employees the small people not these big salary fools. If only people could unite these corporate big wigs would be overthrow but I see we have a bunch of yes men in these comment thread.
I’m sorry but you are entitled to your opinion and that’s fine. But to try to act like people don’t like her because she is a women is the weakest thing I have seen anyone say on here. You are one of the biggest trolls I have seen on this website but luckily you are pretty terrible at gender/race baiting
WS6 TA: Then your "researchable fact" (s) should also tell you that she is not alone there. Are you also bagging on the CEO's of Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, Mazda, Ford, Chrysler Corp, BMW, Audi, MB, Jaguar, Land Rover, Kia, Hyundai....................................................................
Or are you just another one of the boys who don't like women who can run things?
You sound desperate in your attempt to try to pull the gender card.
Peter G: Not desperate at all. The many commentators on here making the silly comments make it quite easy. Just playing off those.
No I smell desperation
Dan Berning, when did I once bring gender into this conversation, you like others here need to stop reading into something that doesn’t exist. Your comments sound more like your own insecurities and issues. The bottom line is, man, woman or chimpanzee she is the CEO of this company and is responsible for its faults and successes. I didn’t make any comments about other manufacturers but it’s a fact that the semi conductor issue has hit GM more than any of the other manufacturers you mentioned. Do your on fact checking because I was responsible enough to do mine. And I noticed you didn’t comment on the fact that GM is 109 BILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT and heading towards a second bankruptcy. That’s some great leadership. Stop hugging trees for a moment and check your facts.
Dan DIDNT you comment below to another person you don’t care about those other companies since this is gma? Lol but you are asking another person about a bunch of other companies. But I’ll answer your question yes they are all getting tons of hate to but of course you wouldn’t know since you “claim” you don’t care about other companies since this is gma you are a joke. Also who said anything about having a problem with her being a women besides you and Andy? Please point the person out besides you two.
Nathan: Let me spell it out for you since you can't seem to comprehend the topic. The point was that we are on the GMA site and reading the comments on GM products, etc. So when someone brings up Tim/Apple and a thread with comments about him, I don't care because I'm not taking the time to be on that site/thread. My comments are based on GMA stories and the comments made here.
Lol you are a fool so again you say since we are on gma you wanna talk about gm but yet you ask that man if he is bagging on 15 other car company ceo you gotta be one of the stupidest people I have seen on here and that is saying a lot considering the fools that comment on this website
Much more than chip shortage. I’ve been waiting for my recalled brake pads. Wonder who makes those? China? I doubt that.
She would specialize in stelettos
Wow. I'm going to stick up for Andy (No "C"). Some times the comments on GMA are so disgusting and dated. Talk about any that could be bad about GM, and you have the same basic group that jumps on Barra. There isn't one single thing above that I've read that has any credibility from the bash Barra team. Andy (no C) is the only one with some sense in what is being said above. Now talk about the chip shortages and the dimwits above blaming Barra for that? Really? That would be like Red Lobster running out of shrimp during a shrimp shortage and all restaurants are also out of shrimp. Then blaming the CEO of Red Lobster for "not ordering enough shrimp"!! What rock do you people live under? Now she's responsible for faulty LG battery packs used in the Bolts? Why do I get the feeling these same people above would NOT be saying these stupid things if it was a white 60 year old man at the helm instead of Barra?
Grow up guys.
Nobody cares dude do you come here for the comments or to read the articles? Which one? Majority of people read the articles and move on you know why because your opinion means absolutely nothing. You don’t like it don’t scroll all the way down to the comments.
You wanna keep pulling the race card and gender card go ahead all’s that does is make it to where people know how desperate you really are. I know people who work at gm plants some like her some don’t but guess what nobody I know dislikes her because she is a women. The only person I have seen even bring that up is you.
Would you like an example? Actually I don’t care if you want an example or not I’m going to give you one. Apples ceo Tim Cook they announced there new iPhone 13 this week along with other products and he has been getting slammed for not making many improvements I don’t need to go into detail about what people are mad about you obviously have the internet so you can look it up yourself. By the way he is white a man and is exactly 60 years old. Now would you like to edit your comment and say a white male who is 65 now? If you do that I can’t use Tim as an example have a good day.
I have a question? Isn’t one of the main reasons all of the auto manufacturers in general not just gm I mean all of them are in the situation they are is because last year they canceled most or at least a lot of there chip orders? I could be wrong but I believe I read that somewhere? Anyways point is if that is true that seems like a huge decesion to make I would think that the ceo of any company would have to sign off on something like that since those chips are so vital to there operations. Again I could be wrong but if that is the case then yes the CEO’s of all these auto companies deserve some of the blame.
Jesse: Your comment is just stupid from the first word. Here you are in the "comments" section making a comment. Asking me if I come on here to read the articles or comments is just silly.
Kyle: The race and gender card? Have you read the comments here and in past articles? Enough said.
Danny: I don't care about Tim or Apple and I certainly wouldn't waste my time going there to read comments about something I could care less about. Last time I checked, this was GMA and about cars.
Mike: I'm in the auto business. When the pandemic first began, there was total uncertainty in what was going to happen. Our dealership immediately laid off numerous people and I was put to part-time and working from home. Little did we realize that only a few weeks into it, our business picked up and I came back full time. We ended up being busy as heck. This happened all over the country with all brands. My point is that nobody really knew what was going to happen or how it would pan out. To "think" that Barra or any CEO at the top would be able to figure out how things would go and outsmart the entire industry is just stupid. It's why people pointing at her is just silly. On top of that, online sales took off for all products and this created higher demand for chips than what was originally thought. On top of that, one of the largest chip plants in the world (in Japan) had a plant fire that put them down for around 6 months. All this has brought us to where we are.
Point being that when these people above start spewing the rants against Barra, there's only really two choices for those who understand it. Either these people are just really stupid or they dislike women in power. Personally, I don't feel these people are stupid, so I have to go with being stuck in the past.
Thanks for the info I did not know all that. Let me ask you a few questions since you are in the auto business if that’s ok? 1 why do you think everyone or a lot of people bought new cars? Do you think people panicked or something and thought they better buy what they can now before it’s to late? Sorta like how people were in the beginning with toilet paper and those type of things? #2 why don’t auto manufacturers try to bring chip making back here to the US? I know I have seen some say how expensive it would be and I do understand that but if cost is the reason why don’t they all chip in together? Like Ford gm Chrysler and build a big plant somewhere it would make the cost a lot less? Anyways thanks for the response and info I hope you have a good weekend.
Mike: Thanks for actually having a good conversation and not taking the low road like some. It's gotten so bad on here that someone above ^^ actually used my name somehow with a quite childish emoji. How adult like.
Anyhow. I can't say the true reason why car sales during the pandemic went up so much. Maybe it was because so many people were stuck at home and just wanted to get something new?? Not sure. Personally, I work in the fleet department and 96% of our business is with brokers. Because of the pandemic, a lot more people used brokers in order to stay away from the dealerships. What I can say is that vehicle sales did become the new toilet paper! Your second question is well above my pay grade. None of this stuff is simple and it's certainly a world market now. I would hope after this chip issue that maybe the big 3 would go into some type of agreement and produce chips for their use. But the bottom line is that this chip shortage has created panic buying of cars.
Yea no worries. I live in a pretty big city and where I work I have to pass by several dealerships to get there and it’s crazy the Chevy dealership has had hardly anything I have seen two bolts there but I’m not sure if they are test cars or not because they have been there for several months. They also have one of those big rocky ridge trucks im sure they want a lot for it but other then that it’s bare. Even the work trucks and vans are scarce. To be honest I can’t tell you the last time I saw a new work van there. Same for the Ford and Chrysler dodge jeep ram dealership I pass they have hardly anything. I know the big 3 are competitors but hopefully like you said after this whole fiasco they at least work together on building a chip factory here or at least bring it closer state side.
Dan I don’t care what you care about and what you don’t you specifically said I get the feeling the people above would NOT be saying these stupid things if it was a white 60 year old man at the helm instead of barra. That is what you said so I gave you an example of a white 60 year old man who is getting trashed just like barra. I’m sorry that took the steam out of your narrative.
What I would like to see is the Silverado and GMC Sierra production lines be shut down for six months at least and all those chips go to the CT4, CT5 and XT4 production lines.
Maybe the brake pads will go to my XT6! 🤞
Trolls can't or won't look at financial numbers.
General Motors gross profit for the twelve months ending June 30, 2021 was $21.036B
General Motors annual gross profit for 2020 was $13.672B
General Motors annual gross profit for 2019 was $13.972B
General Motors annual gross profit for 2018 was $14.095B
Too much regulation on crash worthiness, such has hitting pedestrians, which is why pop lights are gone and hood ornaments Aerodynamic for the car to get better gas mileage also plays into styling. However with electric which i'm not sure will really be the full future you could make sexier cars because mpg and emmisions won't be as big a issue.
