Jeep Grand Wagoneer To Debut As Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban And GMC Yukon Rival

Fiat Chrysler has released the first official teaser images of its new Jeep Grand Wagoneer full-size SUV, which will serve as a direct rival to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL.

The new teaser images show the unique, illuminated grille of the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer, along with a close-up of the ‘Wagoneer’ nameplate and two ultra-detailed macro shots of the SUV’s interior.

The teaser image showing the grille reveals the Wagoneer will retain the brand’s recognizable seven-slot grille design, which will be backlit by LEDs to give it a head-turning, imposing look. The close-up of the ‘Wagoneer’ nameplate, meanwhile, reveals a high-end looking badge with gold letters with a silver face. Joining the ‘Wagoneer’ text is an American flag, which serves as a reminder that this new three-row is an all-American product.

Finally, the interior teasers give us a zoomed-in look at the control dial that will be mounted on the center console, along with the push-button start. It’s not clear if the rotary dial seen in the photo will be used to select the transmission mode or if it will be used to control the infotainment system. The photo showing the push-button start, meanwhile, reveals a high-end looking double-stitched housing for the button, along with a thin open-pore wood trim piece running just below it.

As we pointed out previously, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be a direct rival to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. FCA has managed to keep almost all details on the body-on-frame SUV a secret, but we expect the SUV to feature four-wheel-drive and an available V8 engine. The automaker’s 5.7L HEMI V8 may make an appearance, along with its 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 and 3.6L Pentastar V6. In the latest Ram 1500 pickup truck, all of these powerplants mate with the automaker’s TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic.

GM holds a dominant position in the full-size SUV segment. Last year, the automaker held nearly 60 percent of the full-size SUV market share, though that number included the Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV. In that time, GM sold 158,146 more full-size SUVs than Ford, 212,057 units more than Nissan and 244,671 units more than Toyota. Jeep will be hard-pressed to try and compete with GM in this space, then, but the Grand Wagoneer may be able to pull some customers away from The General if FCA can convince buyers it’s the superior product.

As our sister site, Ford Authority also pointed out, the Grand Wagoneer will also serve as a rival to the Ford Expedition.

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is expected to start at around $60,000 USD when it goes on sale next year, with fully-loaded examples extending into the low $100,000 range. Look for a complete rundown on the new full-size SUV following its debut on September 3rd.

  • I'm not a jeep person at all, the only thing I used to buy was Honda and Acura's. They lasted an insane amount of miles and looked great. I did like the feel and convenience of the Chevy Z71Tahoe, Suburban and Silverado. So needless to say I have a 2005 Tahoe and 8.1 big block Suburban. I have around 200,000 miles on both of them and they still act and look new. I love them better than anything I've test drove. I think I will stick to them.

  • I hope the Grand Cherokee offers a “woodie” option.

The old Grand Cherokee “woodies” were beautiful. I’d like to see this make a comeback, it would definitely be a hit with the Grand Cherokee cult crowd, and would differentiate them from all the other look alike large SUVS.

  • Do your feelings also suggest that Keeps pricetag will leapfrog Chevy and Ford's pricing? We already know the Wrangler and Gladiator get ridiculously expensive. I'd bet the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will be overpriced.

  • GM should have dropped chevy and kept Pontiac. Just because Pontiac had better sales than chevy cars. Look now chevy drops most of their line up on cars. I hope jeep gives them a run for their money! Dump chevy bring Pontiac back! While their at it what happened to Holden? Lets just drop them too? Stupid...

    Trump 2020 :)

    • Pontiac had better sales? You must have been living in an alternate universe at the time, or just forgot that they messed up the Grand Prix and Bonneville when they were redesigned during their last few years.

No, getting rid of Chevrolet and keeping Pontiac would have meant no truck sales in exchange for cars with plastic cladding all over them.

  • Remember Ford Excursion? Will Jeep do better against Suburban & Yukon XL? Ram trucks are more than competitive now. I remember when Dodge pickups were a joke, Not now.

  • Long time Suburban owner--we have had 7 Suburbans over the years, mostly recently a 2015 and 2019 (Z71s). I was excited about the 2021 new models but disappointed to learn G80 auto locking rear differential has been dropped. I know they have added driving modes that use brake application to force power transfer to the wheel with traction. However, that is not effective as a locking differential. The modes are nice but fundamentally I can replicate a lot of what they do by throttle control and turning off the stability control system but I can't replicate a locking diff.

If the Jeep Grand Waggoner offers a rear locker with its two speed transfer case, then yes, I would seriously consider the GW.

  • There was a reason why the Waggoner went off the market, its called competition. Bringing it back with psuedo Durango/Grand Cherokee interior with Jeep suspension and truck engine line ups or the Hellcat or the R/T engines. In any case, it's not going to be a welcome entry. FCA now has a vendetta with GM and this will backfire by depleting the Cherokee and Durango line up and in some cases both the Jeep and truckline for those who bought them for the rugged market that Cherokee and Durango couldn't satisfy. FCA should have gone after the Hummer EV and not build another gas Frankenstein that may disappear after the first couple of years...
