Competitive Sales Comparison
Despite the decline in Chevy Tahoe and Suburban sales volume during Q2, the duo continued to dominate the segment during the second quarter of 2020 in the United States, with a combined 23,032 units sold, comprised of 16,016 units of the Tahoe and 7,016 of the Suburban. The Ford Expedition took second place in the segment with 12,555 deliveries (see running Ford Expedition sales), ahead of the Tahoe/Suburban’s corporate cousin – the GMC Yukon – in third place (see running GMC Yukon sales). It’s worth noting that Expedition sales figures include those of the regular-length Expedition (Tahoe competitor) and the extended-length Expedition MAX (Suburban competitor), while Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe sales are reported separately.

The GM Authority Take
Chevy Tahoe and Suburban sales in the second quarter enabled the Bow Tie brand to maintain its long-standing status as the undisputed sales leader in the segment. Every model in this segment saw a decrease in sales, though the Suburban reported the largest decline of nearly 62 percent.
We primarily attribute the drop in Tahoe and Suburban deliveries during Q2 to the instability in supply and demand brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. GM and the two full-size Chevrolet SUVs are not unique in being impacted by the situation, as the entire industry was impacted. Additionally, it’s likely that two other factors negatively impacted sales of the ‘burban and Tahoe:
- The UAW strike during the fourth quarter of 2019 against GM, which idled production for at least 40 days, resulting in less available inventory at the dealer level, resulting in GM not being able to fulfill retail, fleet and commercial orders. Notably, the strike also set back the reveal and launch of Chevy’s all- new, 2021 model year full-size SUVs.
- The launch of the all-new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2021 Chevrolet Suburban. In order to retool for the all-new models, GM stopped production of the outgoing Tahoe and Suburban, causing inventory levels to be depleted. Less models available for purchase at the retail level results in an unfavorable scenario where sales volume naturally decreases. Luckily, the all-new models have already begun to arrive at dealers and some customers are already taking delivery.

You ain’t seen nothing yet. Wait to see what the sales figures are with the 2021 Tahoe/Suburbans. With a price tag of $80,000 plus for a High Country Tahoe, they won’t be selling like hotcakes anytime soon…
