As we covered a few days ago, Jeep is currently prepping a new three-row SUV based on the Ram 1500 pickup. Slated to carry the Wagoneer nameplate, the new full-size, body-on-frame utility will compete head-to-head with the 2021 GMC Yukon and 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe. Interestingly, all three models are practically identical with regard to exterior sizing.
While we’ll have to wait for the official numbers for final verification, initial spy shots reveal that the camo-clad prototypes for both the new Wagoneer and the new 2021 GMC Yukon sport the same exterior dimensions. Thus, we can add the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe to the mix as well, given its close relation to the new Yukon.
General Motors is expected to reveal the new 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe next week alongside the next-generation Chevrolet Suburban. Meanwhile, the 2021 GMC Yukon is expected to drop sometime in the near future, while the 2021 Jeep Wagoneer will hit the scene midway through the 2020 calendar year.
The next-gen GM trucks will utilize the new GM T1 truck platform, switching over to a new independent rear suspension in the process. Both the 2021 GMC Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe will utilize the latest Global B electrical architecture as well.
As for numbers and specs regarding the exterior size, the 2021 GMC Yukon will be roughly the same size as the current model. For reference, we’ve listed the current model’s dimensions below:
Dimension | Measurement (in. / mm) |
---|---|
Wheelbase | 116 / 2946 |
Overall Length | 203.9 / 5179 |
Overall Width | 80.5 / 2045 |
Overall Height | 74.4 / 1890 |
Track (front) | 68.7 / 1745 |
Track (rear) | 68.7 / 1744 |
Ground Clearance | 8 / 203 |
As evidenced by the two-tiered image at the top of this post, we would expect similar figures from the new Jeep Wagoneer as well.

I thought Wagoneer will compete with Luxury SUV (Audi Q series, BMW X series and Range Rovers).
Grand Wagoneer and wagoneer will be separate, Grand Wagoneer will go after the luxury space
I think the new Tahoe/Suburban will have slightly better interior room and improved dynamics.
This new Jeep will be a bear with the 6.4 liter Hemi engine. They could offer a cheaper model by using the 5.7 liter engine as a base engine. If this new Wagoneer uses the E-boost system, it gives an extra 90 HP at the start, which means the total torque at low RPM will be well over 400 lbs feet, allowing for faster acceleration than the GM or Ford/Lincoln large SUV’s. They should also offer a luxury version of the Wagoneer, to be sold under the Chrysler name to compete directly with Lincoln and Caddy.
They will. It will be called the Grand Wagoneer
The Jeep name has more brand recognition now than Chrysler does. Making it a Chrysler would hurt it.
The wagoneer always had an affluent buyer base. It was a luxury vehicle without the pretentiousness. That was one of the reasons Chrysler killed it originally. They purchased amc(Jeep) and couldn’t have their top brand outdone by a 4×4. It’s only taken thirty years but they realized their mistake.
I think it will compete against all the gm family of bof suvs. They just need to keep quality, reliability, and durability in check.
Except the Ram with the E torque system is only 1/10 a second faster than a Silverado with the 5.3. 6.2 Silverado is no contest.
The 6.2 V8 should be used so it has power and fuel economy.
Can’t wait to see it naked but I’ll probably be disappointed. Story of my life I guess.
Better not be like seeing Mary Bara naked.
You want to see Mark Ruess naked instead?…..?
The question in the article is do we think the new Wagoneer will have what it takes to compete: YES.
If this is being built on the Ram 1500 chassis, then based on what the new Ram is doing to GM I’d say this will be a huge winner. Add to the fact that it will be a Jeep (with a huge following and loyalty), and I really feel this will be a run-away winner. Don’t think the GM twins should be afraid a lot, but they best keep a good eye on this Wagoneer.
I think that taking on the big 3 of Large SUV”s,. Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade is going to be a tall order. These 3 have been the Kings of the road for decades. Ford is trying there best to get that crown, but I think when 2021 models come out Ford will lose the fight. After seeing the Navigator at the auto show I wasn’t very impressed. The poor think looked like the inside of a 50’s Ford pickup! Plus, I think the engines in the GM products are better and stronger for the Long haul. I haven’t seen a clean looking engine bay in any of Ford’s larger vehicles in years. FCA might do a better job of that and we will see if they use good interior trim parts, since Jeep is not known for classy interiors.
I have begged Chevy to offer the new Diesel in the 2021 lineup, but they have not. If Jeep can offer the Diesel option… SIGN ME UP FOR A WAGONEER!
I have always been surprised that GM didn’t offer a diesel in the GMC and Chevy SUV . There is plenty of room and Even extra space for another battery. Apparently they offer this option in other countries. When I bought my Yukon in 16′ I probably would not have ordered one with the diesel, but I think it would put GM way ahead of the pack if they did.
What do you mean they have not? GM have not announced what will power the 2021s, let some the vehicle itself! Get your story straight.
It amazes me that people flip back and forth from manufacturers like choosing a piece of candy. Dont you people have ant loyalty?
I guess not and that’s pathetic is you ask me. Just my opinion!!!
So once you own one brand you should only own that forever? That is ridiculous. There are so many options for all classes of vehicles. You SHOULD pick them like candy and go for the one that you like the best! Who cares about loyalty, drive what you want to.
We dont see eye to eye on this. I have only owned chevy cars and trucks in my life. I just purchased a new truck Silverado trailboss. And unless GM goes out of business I will keep buying GM cars and trucks exclusively.
It’s called loyalty, my also appreciations that I am a loyal person instead of jumping around and picking things like candy.
Being a chevy man use to mean something in this world, unfortunately people have lost their morals.
Live your life how ever you want. I choose to only drive one make of cars and trucks!!!
GM for life
Holy, seems that way you will miss out on alot of experiences, what is wrong with trying out different brands? Life is about trying new things. GM just killed the car I own, I.e Buick Regal GS, when I trade in mine in the next couple years for a electric vehicle if GM doesn’t have something fun and good looking for a EV I’ll be switching brands. Long story short I’m not going to settle with a brand that doesn’t have what I want because of a badge
I feel the same way when it comes to wear I work, I dont believe in jumping from one company to another. I have been with one company for a very long time and plan on staying with that company until I retire.
It goes back to my loyalty point and standing for something in this world. Pick something and stick with it.
Do you respect for a person who picks a different sports team to be a fan of? Most people say no. Do people flip back in forth between being a Republican or Democrate? Most people pick one for life.
So why is a automotive company any different? I have never understood this difference.
The 99 GMC Yukon Denali the the 4L80 is a Tank. My friend has 365K on it and the motor is still running strong. Surprisingly, it still gets up to 18 mpg highway when we take it up north. The only problem is rust on frame rails, but that was fixed this summer with an EPI coat. Hopefully the new ones will be just at reliable.
I have had both FCA and GM products. Right now I have a Yukon and I will say I like it and would buy another in a minute. Not that I didn’t like my Dodge Ram, but FCA had nothing that interested me when I bought the Yukon.
I have owned several vehicles over years. Expect in a couple of cases did I have the same brand. When needed a new vehicle, I picked one based on our needs at the time. After a bad experience with Ford back in the late 80’s, was very soured to buy any American vehicles, especially Ford, and I haven’t had a Ford since then. It was until 2003 that I purchased our Dodge Ram Diesel. I kept this vehicle for 13 years, at which time buying the Yukon in 2016. Mainly because I did not have any use for pickup any more. We also own a 2015 BMW, which I bought for my wife. Buying a vehicle should be based on need and in some cases want. But should not be limited to one manufacturer. Not every vehicle a manufacturer makes is going to be a winner and could be a warranty nightmare!
When I got my 16′ Yukon the difference between the 5.3 and 6.2 in 0-60 wasn’t all that different. Actually the 5.3 GVTW is than the 6.2, at least in 16′. Taking into account that the that the Denali weighed more, which translates to towing less then the 5.3.
I think comparing loyalty of a sports team is not the same as a buying a car. For one thing you have no vested interest in a sports team, at least most of us don’t. Same with a political parties. I was a Democrat for years, switched to Republican, and now i am an Independent. I did work for Federal Government for 32 years, but that also doesn’t compare either to buying a car, since that was my career choice. All manufacturers go through a period of making some bad models, so why would you buy a car from them knowing that you may get a lemon! Such was the case I had with Ford’s in the 80’s and 90’s. I haven’t had a Ford since and probably won’t.
