GM Sold Three Chevy Sonic Units In Q2 2023

Over the course of the entire 2022 calendar year, General Motors recorded 16 deliveries of new Chevy Sonic units, despite the Sonic being discontinued after the 2020 model year. Now, The General recorded three deliveries of the Chevy Sonic during Q2 2023.

As a whole, General Motors sold 691,978 vehicles during the second quarter of the 2023 calendar year. Of that figure, the Chevy Sonic accounted for three deliveries.

These three Sonic deliveries are referred to as “zombie cars,” since they are sold long after the vehicle was officially discontinued. It also means that these vehicles have been on dealer lots for quite some time now.

As a reminder, the Chevy Sonic launched in the U.S. for the 2012 model year, replacing the Chevy Aveo. At the time of its discontinuation, the 2020 Sonic was available in LS, LT and Premier trim levels for the sedan model, and LT and Premier trim levels for the five-door hatchback. A sporty RS appearance package was optional on LT and Premier sedans, as well as equipped as standard fare on the hatch.

No matter trim or body style, all 2020 Sonic units were equipped with the turbocharged 1.4L LUV I4 gasoline engine, rated at 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. This output was routed to the front wheels through the GM six-speed automatic transmission.

Production ended at the GM Lake Orion plant back in October 2020. The last Sonic ever manufactured was a sedan in LT configuration. Equipped with the RS package, this example was painted in Mosaic Black Metallic paint and featured a Jet Black interior colorway.

The then-new Chevy Bolt EUV was introduced around this timeframe and took advantage of the increased production capacity the Sonic’s departure created. Currently, the GM Lake Orion assembly plant produces the Chevy Bolt EV, Chevy Bolt EUV, and Cruise AV vehicles.

  • I've owned a 2014 Sonic LTZ Hatchback since new and it has ben the most trouble free GM product I've ever owned, and to hear of GM dropping this vehicle from it's lineup of compact vehicles is not only disturbing but downright stupid! However GM has ben known for doing stupid things and this of course fits right in with GM's continuing downfall as a world leader in the business world, and now with the impending attempt to eventually "Go All EV" this will secure GM future, a bleak and daunting future for GM has lost it's way as each of it's line up of vehicles have risen in cost to the point where the average person looking for a small but efficient "ICE" or Hybrid product will have no choice but to go look elsewhere. Sometimes I question GM's ability to no longer "read the market" and give the public exactly what they're looking for.
This can only be attributed to really lousy upper management decisions, year after year. It seems that GM has been playing "catch up" with other auto manufactures (both foreign and domestic) and sadly arriving "a day late and a dollar short" for years now. I sometimes have to question my allegiance to GM products for years, owning a late model Corvette, a new GMC Terrain Denali and that fun to drive, spunky little Sonic LTZ ....but damn if these particular vehicles haven't been reliable, and I guess until something better comes along, I'll maintain these vehicles and hope and pray that someday in the not too distant future, GM gets it's act together and can keep my loyalty to their products...but it won't be an EV product that'll keep me as a returning GM customer. Maybe a hybrid EV and ICE might sway me but I have no faith in an all EV lineup of vehicles...not now anyway, maybe way in the future when the world has figured out how to configure another way of powering our vehicles that does not rely on providing electricity only for my energy source. We'll see I guess, but you'd better hurry, at 75 years old...I'm not sure how much longer I'll be purchasing new vehicles for my transportation needs and believe me there are a lot of us "Baby Boomers" in this same predicament so I guess I'm not totally alone in my quandary, so for now I'll keep on supporting the gas and oil industries with my "ICE" vehicles, till the well runs dry.

    • GM products designed and built in Asia are great. This is why Envision is so trouble free and why Encore GX, Trax and Envista will be on par with Honda

  • Funny how all the EV hot air Mary Barra was preaching has gone up in smoke. From losing money on every Bolt built to selling less than fifty Hummers. Remember when Mary said GM would be all electric by 2035? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Oh, and to top it off GM just announced a big investment into a combustion engine plant. ROTF laughing 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  • GM made more net income last year (per unit sold) than anytime in decades. Bad decisions by upper management? As a long time GM stockholder, I don’t think so. The Mary Barra years have been a revelation for GM.

  • With the 40% wage hike for the UAW, GM, Ford and that other company will be priced out of the market. I have a new Bronco. My spouse’s 2020 Chevy Traverse has way better technology, more features, and flawless operation. The HD surround vision in the Bronco is a joke. It looks like a 3 year old tried to glue the camera images together. So, GM can do a very good job, but nobody knows it. I think there’s a whole segment out there that hates GM no matter how good their products are.
