The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 debuts just a handful of changes and updates compared to the preceding 2023 model year. Notably, GM Authority has learned that one of those updates is a new safety feature, specifically a rear seat belt indicator.
Tagged with RPO code UH5, the rear seat belt indicator for the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is included as standard on all trim levels in the Double Cab and Crew Cab body configurations. The feature is not available for Regular Cab models, which do not include a rear seat.
The new rear seat belt indicator for the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 notifies the driver which rear passengers are buckled in and which are not, thanks to a small graphic displayed on the driver instrument panel. This feature will likely prove to be particularly useful for customers that transport their kids in their truck. Additionally, the new rear seat belt indicator provides a nice complement to the rear seat reminder feature (RPO code RSR) added with the introduction of the refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500.
As GM Authority covered previously, the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 also offers the revised Hydra-Matic 8L80 eight-speed automatic transmission (RPO code MFC). The second-generation eight-speed automatic connects to the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, replacing the eight-speed automatic transmission (RPO code M5T) equipped by the 2019 through 2023 GMC Sierra 1500.
The 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine is one of four powerplants offered for the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. The list also includes the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, and the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine. The GMC Sierra 1500 rides on the GM T1 platform.
As GM Authority covered previously, the start of regular production (SORP) for the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 is set to begin on July 17th. Production will take place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and the GM Silao plant in Mexico.
