More GM EV Models Planned For Spring Hill Plant

General Motors has announced plans to launch 30 new EV models globally by 2025, with $35 billion earmarked for the development of EV and AV technology during that time period. In order to launch all those EVs, GM is also ramping up its electric vehicle production, with additional GM EV models set to roll off the line at the automaker’s Spring Hill Production facility in Spring Hill, Tennessee.

During a recent media session held prior to the production start of the all-new Cadillac Lyriq luxury crossover, GM confirmed that “additional EV models are planned for Spring Hill.”

For the moment, it’s unclear exactly what these new models will be, but the most obvious answer is likely a range of new crossovers. GM has announced several upcoming Ultium-based crossover models thus far, including the new Chevy Equinox EV and Chevy Blazer EV, as well as a future and as-of-yet unnamed Buick crossover. GM has also announced a new, smaller Cadillac EV crossover to dealers.

Further EV production capacity will be added at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico, although it’s unclear at this time which EVs will be produced at that facility.

In October of 2020, GM announced a $2 billion investment to support EV production at the Spring Hill facility. As GM Authority covered previously, GM has indicated that Spring Hill facility now has the capacity to build nearly 200,000 units annually, including both electric vehicles and internal-combustion-based vehicles. The facility incorporates a flexible manufacturing process that would enable GM to ramp up production of the new Cadillac Lyriq to meet demand as needed.

At present, the Spring Hill facility also produces the Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6, and GMC Acadia, although it is worth noting that GM is set to move GMC Acadia production to the GM Delta Township facility in Michigan, where it will be produced alongside the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave.

    • Yeah, When I am going to be able to purchase my rebadged Honda, since GM stopped making ICE cars. (I do know that gm still produces the Malibu.)

      • I think the Honda/Acura deal is to build two electric CUVs, so even those won't be cars.

  • The Blazer teaser showed a similar fender charge port, so it'll probably be made alongside the Lyriq. The Acura is likely a safe bet, too.

  • The Equinox EV is going to be made in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. Not sure about the Blazer, but the upcoming Buick EV may also be in the running for Spring Hill.

  • What happens to GM's Bottom Line and Stock Price when all the usual "early adopters" get their new EV Toy and those who want no part of these things go elsewhere to buy vehicles with Gas/Diesel engines ? Wiil the few vehicles still for sale with ICE bring astronomical prices even adding more "dealer profit" above MSRP rip-offs than what is going on now ? What happens when enough of these Energy-Hogs are sold and they all begin getting plugged into high Amperage re-charging outlets on a 90 Degree + F day when everyone's A/C units are struggling to keep up ? When China decides to invade Taiwan will the Feds then sanction them too and cut-off a large percentage of the World's refined Lithium supply and their manufactured Li batteries + solar panels ? Have not read if the Feds sanctioned Putin yet to stop buying the Nickel that Russia has so much of that is critical in Li manufacture.

    • @BillJ598.....What you keep forgetting is that elsewhere are all the other companies ALSO building EVs like it or not. If the USA does not get on board eventually when we are dead most likely we will be the only ones burning gas not the rest of the world. Mutli choices is a good thing. Keeping up...well now for those of us with uhum solar EVEN IF BY CHANCE not intentions.....we make our own such that I have paid NO util bill but connection fees as you do since 2012 and have charged my Volt for "FREE" for the 9 years I have had it and and and. Next stop....a 1 week battery pack once the volumes are very high and costs lower....oh wait that will be in my next EV so won't need that either....get on board or get left behind. The world is moving on whether some like it or not.

      • I haven't "forgotten" squat imanjunk but you are unable to perform simple reading comprehension skills as you issue demeaning insults. Two more frequent indicators of indoctrinated, shortsighted EV fan boys that have nothing to offer and no life experience. All of you totally FAIL to realize the consequences of these toys that so many others (that excludes you) have thought things through about because they are able to think independently for themselves and not swallow whole the EV Lobbyist Bull and the Democrat/Biden B.S. that has infected you. Your LIES about your puny, low-Amp Solar being able to re-charge your fire-causing Volt show you are lying unless you just intend to drive your burn-baby-burn Volt only around the block. Keep on lying so I can expose your fabrications for all to see.

  • When will the Cadillac Lyriq offer more exterior paint colors from the introductory 2 exterior colors??

  • The Acura will be built in Spring Hill and the Honda variant in Ramos. Ramos is getting the BEV Blazer, and Equinox as well.
