BrightDrop Opens Its First Dealership

General Motors’ newly launched BrightDrop logistics brand has opened its first brick-and-mortar storefront in Fontana, California.

The new BrightDrop Greater Los Angeles dealership will be operated by Mike Caposio, a longtime dealer operator that currently owns Caposio Buick GMC and Rotolo Chevrolet, the latter of which is the largest Chevrolet dealership in California. Capioso was also the recipient of Chevy’s 2020 Dealer of the Year award.

“We are honored to be selected as BrightDrop’s first-ever dealership,” Caposio said in a statement. “They have a world-class electric delivery van portfolio and share my focus on serving the fleet customer. I believe the era of all-electric fleets is here and I am committed to helping modernize America’s delivery fleets.”

The BrightDrop vehicle portfolio consists of the EV600 and EV410 electric delivery vans. Both vehicles utilize the same platform, Ultium battery pack design and Ultium Drive electric motors, but the EV410 has a shorter wheelbase and about 400 cubic feet of cargo space, whereas the EV600 is longer and boasts 600 cubic feet of cargo room.

BrightDrop will also sell an electrically assisted delivery pallet called the EP1, which is designed to help delivery personnel move heavier packages in a quicker fashion. Lastly, the company has dedicated fleet management software that allows its customers to track and manage their EV600 and EV410 vehicles as well as EP1 delivery pallets in real time.

“BrightDrop’s all-electric ecosystem of products, software and services is designed to help optimize productivity, drive down costs and slash emissions and road congestion,” the new GM brand said in a statement. “BrightDrop dealers are available to support fleet customers with ordering, upfitting and maintaining their purpose-built electric delivery vehicles.”

The BrightDrop EV600 and EV410 will be built at the GM CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, however initial production is being handled by a German supplier called Kuka AG, with GM still performing renovation work at the Oshawa facility.

FedEx will receive the first 500 examples of the BrightrDrop EV600 van after placing an order with the company earlier this year. Production of FedEx’s vans began in September.

Going forward, BrightDrop says it “plans to continue establishing a small, focused dealer network capable of serving fleet customers throughout the United States.” It’s not clear where the company’s second dealership will be located, nor is it clear how many storefronts it plans to operate in the U.S.
