Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Cadillac XT5 sales volume during the first quarter of 2021 places the crossover in sixth place in its competitive set, one spot higher compared to Q4 2020. The XT5 was outsold by the Lexus RX in first, Acura MDX in second, BMW in third (with cumulative X3 and X4 sales), Mercedes-Benz GLC in fourth and the Audi Q5 in fifth. The XT5 placed sixth, outselling the Volvo XC60, Infiniti QX50, Lincoln Nautilus (previously known as the MKX; see running Lincoln Nautilus sales), and Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

From a segment share standpoint, the Lexus RX held 23 percent (equal to Q1 2020) while the Acura MDX grew four percentage points to 14 percent. BMW fell 1 percentage point to 13 percent, tying with Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, which fell 1 percentage point to 13 percent. Audi Q5 grew a single percentage point to 12 percent, while XT5 took 7 percent, down three percentage points compared to the year-ago quarter. All other contenders held a share of 6 percent or less.

The luxury D-crossover segment expanded nearly 35 percent to 122,916 units in Q1 2021, meaning that XT5 sales subsantially underperformed the segment average. The BMW X4 was the only other model to post a decrease in sales this quarter.

We should note that Lexus RX sales now include the two-row RX and the three-row RX L, with the three-row RX L being a rival to the new Cadillac XT6. As such, a more apt comparison would be to pit XT5 and XT6 sales against those of the RX.

CADILLAC XT6 +18.05% 5,990 5,074 14% 15%
TOTAL +22.21% 42,704 34,944

Doing so gives Cadillac 14,763 sales, which is still 13,178 units fewer than the RX family.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT5 sales suffered more than the segment average during the first quarter of 2021. We attribute the circumstance to increased competition in what has quickly become one of the most contested luxury vehicle segments in the world. It’s also possible that XT5 sales slipped due to internal competition from two other Cadillac models – the XT4 and aforementioned XT6.

Going forward, Cadillac will need to continue battling it out with new and established rivals alike in the luxury D-crossover spac. The segment is about to get even more competitive with a new entry in the form of the 2022 Genesis GV70. Meanwhile, Honda Motor Company is currently in the process of launching the all-new Acura MDX.

As GM Authority was first to report, GM is plotting to update the XT5 around 2023 with a freshened model based on the same architecture. Until then, barring any substantial incentives, we expect sales of the current model to continue at roughly the same levels as in Q1 2021.

  • I really like the looks of outside looks of most of the Cadillac models but their interiors are really not that great. I believe MB has the best look interiors.

  • People in coastal cities like NY and LA do not consider Cadillac a must buy. Compared to Japanese and German brands it's viewed as a sub par and not the "cool guy" brand. Even I like the new Envision more and would look to Jag for an F-Pace if I were in the market for a CUV.

  • I think Cadillac is in a weird position. The Chevy versions in the same segments have become so expensive and luxurious that car buyers who want “American luxury” gravitate to the higher trimmed Chevy and gmc models. Gm is basically making Cadillac obsolete by accident. Living in a wealthy suburb of nyc I can tell you with 100% certainty, Chevy Tahoe’s/suburban and gmc Denali are quickly becoming status symbols on par with the German brands and range rovers/Porsche suvs. It just leaves little room for Cadillac as a brand.
