Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Fourth quarter Cadillac XT5 sales volume puts the crossover in seventh place in its competitive set, and one spot lower compared to Q3 2020. The XT4 was outsold by the Lexus RX in first, BMW X3 in second, Audi Q5 in third, Mercedes-Benz GLC in fourth, Acura MDX in fifth, and Volvo XC60 in sixth. The XT5 came in seventh, outselling the Lincoln Nautilus (previously known as the MKX; see running Lincoln MKX sales), Infiniti QX50, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, and BMW X4 (a variant of the X3).

From a segment share standpoint, the Lexus RX held 22 percent (down 2 percentage points) while the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 each grew a single percentage point to 15 and 14 percent, respectively. Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class fell two percentage points to 12 percent, Acura MDX was flat at 10 percent, and the Volvo XC60 gained one percentage point to 7 percent. The XT5 took 7 percent, down one percentage point compared to the year-ago quarter. All other contenders held a share of 4 percent or less.

The luxury D-crossover segment expanded 6 percent to 155,310 units in Q4 2020, meaning that XT5 sales underperformed the segment average.

We should note that Lexus RX sales now include the two-row RX and the three-row RX L, with the three-row RX L being a rival to the new Cadillac XT6. As such, a more apt comparison would be to pit XT5 and XT6 sales against those of the RX.

Doing so gives Cadillac 18,105 sales, which is still 16,703 units fewer than the RX family.

The GM Authority Take

Cadillac XT5 sales suffered more than the segment average during the fourth quarter of 2020. We attribute the circumstance to increased competition in what has quickly become one of the most contested luxury vehicle segments in the world. It’s also possible that XT5 sales slipped due to internal competition from two other Cadillac models – the XT4 and XT6.

Going forward, Cadillac will need to continue battling it out with new and established rivals alike in the luxury D-crossover space, using all the traditional methods including advertising and incentives. The segment is about to get even more competitive with a new entry in the form of the 2022 Genesis GV70. Meanwhile, Honda Motor Company is currently in the process of launching the all-new Acura MDX. As GM Authority was first to report, GM is plotting to overhaul the XT5 around 2023 with a new model based on the same architecture. Until then, barring any substantial incentives, we expect sales of the current model to continue at roughly the same levels as in Q4 2020.

  1. 5 years on the market:
The Germans would have half a dozen different performance variants by now.
Lexus would have put a real ugly grill on the front. So critics focus on that. Ignoring all the vehicles other short comings
The Italians, 5 years, damn has it been in the shop that long?

  2. I have a 214 Cadillac SRX and ready to go with an XT5, but not impressed with the standard engine offered a 4 cylinder with a super charge unit.

I would like to have the same engine that is presently in the SRX 3.6 L and not have to pay the extra money for it. This is a big mistake for the Cadillac marketing division. I am presently looking at other makes other then the Cadillac and it is hard because I have been a Cadillac customer for many years.

    1. Donald M: You are complaining about something that is kind of a moot point. If you go out and shop, you will find nearly everything in this same segment will offer ONLY the 4 cyl. For example, the Volvo XC60 is only available with a 2.0L 4 cyl engine, but with several different “upgrades” available at extra cost. Not only that, but have you actually driven the XT5 with the 2.0L turbo? The HP and torque numbers closely match or even exceed the numbers on v6 models from only a few years ago. Either way, don’t complain about having to pay extra for the V6. That is nothing new as “upgraded” engines have been “optional” for years.

    2. So you’re complaining that Cadillac provides you engine options? You can get the engine you want but you don’t want to pay for it? Reality check! You’re not entitled to a free upgrade! If you don’t want to spend that much, get the v6 in the Blazer or the Acadia. Plenty of options. Or, go elsewhere and find a luxury suv that offers a standard 6 cylinder for less money.

      1. Donald – literally every vehicle in this space except for one has a turbo four as standard. The V6 is an option. If you’re a luxury grade customer, be ready to pony up the cash. If you don’t have it, there’s always Chevy and GMC.

  3. Dan, choice and options are why we buy our choice of autos like Donald M. I myself will not BUY a China made auto (Envision and Volvo) product, which is my choice. If gm does not want to put a v6 power plant into their vehicles, then 7th place is their choice. Not sure what v6’s you are referring too, maybe pre 2000 but in 2020, 310 HP is a heck of a lot more than 237 HP… I bought my vehicles based on v8 and then v6 due to the HP. I had a 2014 Malibu 2.0 Turbo. loved it but I personally had to modify certain parts from keeping it from maintenance issues every 3 months with SES codes. Once the 2.0T lost more HP, it was time to say bye to the 2.0T… BTW, the other manufactures added more HP to their 2.0T… You can only get the 272 HP 295TQ in the Camaro and the ATS, CTS, and the Buick Regal GS. now a days.
Also, Cadillac currently allow for a v6 option.

Not sure what your point is here…

Which year of the XT5, (never owned Cadillac) anything below the 272 and 257 HP versions, not worth owning IM0. N

    1. Race57: Please re-read what I said. I’ll clue you in on what points you may want to take note of.
      1. I said if he goes out, he will find “nearly” everything with a similar size 4 cyl.
      2. I used Volvo as an example only. MB, BMW, Infiniti and many others use (as standard) a 2.0L 4cyl.
      3. I stated “upgrades” as extra cost in other brands too.
      4. Talking about the 2.0 having as much or more than many V6’s from “a few years ago”. I didn’t say for 2020 or 2019 or 2018. In his post, Donald mentioned a 214 (sic) which I think meant 2014. Not all, but many V6’s of 6+ years ago were producing Hp in the range of 200 to 230.
      5. I clearly touched on upgraded or optional engines as NOT being new.

So my point is that Donald M complaining about not wanting to pay extra for the V6 is just silly. We have been doing this nearly as long as cars have been around. This couldn’t be more prevalent than in the truck markets, but cars too. Bottom line is that it just seems like many people come on here to just complain and complain about everything. They want to blame Mary for their burnt toast in the morning. They want to blame bean counters. Blame the sun coming out for causing them to pay for sunglasses. Of course I’m being silly now, but complaining about paying for an optional engine is really stupid. I was pointing out that it’s not new and many brands do the same thing.

  4. Correction: Also, Cadillac currently does not allow for a v6 option.

    1. Race57 – maybe you should go to Cadillacs web page and start researching the XT5. It is in fact available with a v6.

      So what was your point?

  5. Maybe because it is boring AF.

  6. I’ll excuse under performing LX, MB. BMW, and Audi but trailing Acura and Volvo in YTD sales is inexcusable. A kick in the gut.

  7. I stand corrected on the Cadillac v6 offering.

  8. I came out of a 2014 SRX AWD V6 310 hp and opted for a 2020 XT5 Premium Luxury AWD and I gladly paid the 1K for the V6. I had enough of the 2.0T in my wife’s 2016 ATS. CAR WAS QUICK. Noisy too. Just couldn’t bring myself to go with the standard engine in a 60k SUV. I will avoid another 4 banger like the plague.
