Production of the Chevy Camaro and Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans will resume at the GM Lansing Grand River Assembly plant next week.
General Motors shut down the Lansing Grand River plant at the beginning of March due to the global semiconductor chip shortage. The plant stayed offline for the rest of March and has remained idle for all of April as the automaker continued to grapple with a shortage of microchips.
Some areas of the plant are now set to be brought back online on May 3rd, according to Automotive News, with full production to slowly return throughout the month. The GM Lansing Grand River plant is a 3.4 million square foot facility sitting on 111 acres of land in central Michigan. The facility builds the Chevy Camaro sports coupe, along with the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 luxury sedans.
GM said previously that it would prioritize its most popular vehicles amid the semiconductor chip shortage, which include the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks and its line of full-size SUVs. Despite its best efforts, the automaker was forced to build some examples of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra without Active Fuel Management (AFM) and Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) in order to save some of its chip supply and keep the production lines up and running. Similarly, the automaker was forced to cancel some orders for the Chevy Tahoe, Suburban and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL earlier in the year due to the chip shortage as it was unable to fulfill orders for vehicles equipped with Air Ride Adaptive Suspension and the Max Trailering Package.
Other GM plants that have been forced to take downtime amid the chip shortage include the CAMI Assembly plant in Ontario, Fairfaix Assembly plant in Kansas and San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico. The automaker’s Bupyeong Assembly plant in South Korea has also taken intermittent downtime in recent months but returned to its regularly scheduled work procedures last week.
GM isn’t the only automaker to be negatively affected by the global microchip shortage, with Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen AG, Toyota Motor Corporation, Nissan Motor Corporation, and Subaru Corporation also reducing output as a result of the shortage, among others.

Good news! I hope it stays open.
Good news for a change!
The industry really needs to get this chip shortage fixed soon. Between that and other Covid related issues, the inventories of all brands are hurting. Mazda is telling us that we may be fully out of stock by mid-summer. Volvo is a little better, but not much. No matter that I work in the fleet department, no cars = no sales = loss of income! Yikes.
On a better note, I'm getting my CT4 back tomorrow. This dealer (another one from the dealership it sat at for 11 days last month) was able to actually diagnose the noise and find out where it was coming from. It took them one week, but at least they found the source and fixed it. Just a simple cable slightly out of place that was rubbing against something else, but causing a terrible noise. Happily looking forward to having it back with that super quiet ride.
I don't feel sorry for the dealerships one bit, they are posting record profits even with low inventory over all this, like 150% profits. I just placed an order for a 2022 ZL1 and the dealer warned there would be a mark up. Yeah, a mark up on a vehicle which has not sold well at all. I told them, we'd cross that bridge when we got there. I understand fully the current market situation but most dealers are taking advantage of this. For a dealer to tell me there would be a mark up on a vehicle they do not yet have an invoice for let me know I'm probably doing business with the wrong dealer....we shall see...
Ridiculous mate. Most top spec camaros are ordered by customers. As the dealers plague the lots with 4 and 6 banger low trim camaros. I plan to order a 2022 ZL1 as well sometime this year. That really makes me upset man as ZL1s are not on lots like Hellcats or other SRT lots. Did you have to pay a 1000$ deposit? The dealership I plan on buying from told me I would have to pay that to order one.
Maybe I am better off waiting until August or September to order one then. Did they give you a range as to when production could be completed? I know there are people on this site that said they are waiting for their 2021s.
Yes 1000 dollar deposit, though it's fully refundable. I would wait at this point until production opens back up again.
I think your thinking about 150% profit is a little off. People have always thought that dealerships make big money on selling cars and trucks. when most of their income comes from parts and service. But then you can think what you want and can always check other dealerships out for pricing.
Mike Kuhn: You are spot on. I've been working for dealerships nearly 19 years now. I will say that I personally feel all dealerships are wh0res and would step on their mother's back to get a buck. However, it's NOT an easy business and the new car sales is not where the money is at. Use cars? Yes, a lot more profit in most cases. Parts and service? Yes, a ton of money to be made there. But it really takes that to keep the dealerships open. The true problem is that people have gotten to where they don't want the dealership to make any money on the cars and the competition is blood thirsty. So the consumers and greedy dealers have created this problem and why they attempt to make it up on junk in the finance office, parts and service.
Dealerships main profit centers are the F & I office, used cars after they get trade ins cheap, and service. That why smart people go in with their own loan or cash, sell their old car at CarMax and say "No Thanks" to every question the F & I person asks. When it comes to maintanance find a good private shop, or do it yourself.
That 150% figure with taken from a GM article, those are not my figures and yes I fully understand where they makes more of their income.
I have used the Costco program a couple times and am using it again to buy a 2021 Camaro SS 1LE. What I discovered was that the Costco discount varies by market. I live in CA and could not buy the Camaro this year as CA has banned the sale of SS and ZL1 models because of too much copper in the brake pads. I had to go out of state. A dealer in Las Vegas was going to order the car for me and the discount was going to be $500 under invoice. Then they tacked on what they called a $1,500 advertising fee. This advertising fee was on a car that had not even been built yet. I said no and tried a couple others before finding a dealer in Oregon who said their Costco discount was $1,100 under invoice and there were no added costs. Doc fees are minimal and I am not buying anything from finance. They gave me a printed order sheet with the numbers. Participating dealers sell a lot of cars thru this program so they do not want to piss off Costco or their customers. I have purchased cars with and without Costco and there is a huge difference in how you are treated and the pricing you get.
Wow! I was told I couldn’t place a order for the 2021 Camaro because they stopped making them, and I’d have to wait until July to build the 2022! May I ask what dealership you placed your order with? I’m in MD!
I ordered first feb thru dealer pure country Chevrolet here in Kentucky
I am working with Kendall Chevy in Eugene.
Not sure if this is the right place to leave this message but I’m in love with the 2019 Silverado exterior paint of oak wood metallic, paint code GEO I believe. It would be great if Chevy would use this color on the 2022 high country 1500. I would trade my 2021 north sky blue that I currently have on order for one. I seen a 2019 high country in that color and my wife and I both fell I love with it. As a consolation, Chevy could use the shadow gray metallic on a high country. Again, it would be in consolation. Who wants to come in second place though! I am already a subscriber to this GM article.
150% PROFIT ?
I DON'T THINK SO, GO TO ANOTHER DEALER
I never said my dealership was charging that market.
What happened to the 4/26 opening date? I ordered my 2SS Camaro in Early March so I'm getting excited.
Me too, wish GM could tell us how many orders are in front of us.
They apparently used to have an online tracker but shut it down due to COVID. I can't wait to get this car. The box of stuff for this car keeps getting more and more full with each passing week.
I hope you all get yours soon in the timely manner.
About time I’ve had a camero ordered since February
You can’t even spell Camaro
I ordered a camaro mid-February and talked to the dealership just today and he said production of the camaro has been halted until at least July.
Correct. Just got word today as well.
Glad hear you got word about your camaro I’m keeping my fingers crossed
Well, it will not be anytime soon unfortunately. Here's to hoping.
I ordered a Camaro 2SS in February and I just talked to my dealership today and they said production of the Camaro was shut down until at least July. So now I don't know if they are right or if this article is.
