The four GM vehicles in the space – the Chevrolet Trax and Buick Encore, as well as their all-new cousins, the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Encore GX – accounted for a cumulative 66,643 deliveries. By comparison, Stellantis’ three rivals – the Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X – accounted for 36,221 deliveries. Meanwhile, Hyundai (Kona and Venue) and Kia (Seltos, Niro, Soul) saw 66,682 deliveries. The figures give GM 24 percent of the segment, equal to 24 percent for Hyundai-Kia and 13 percent for Stellantis (previously Fiat Chrysler Automobiles).

However, a strong argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question, but is rather in a segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia results nets 49,491 deliveries for an 18 percent share.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment expanded 28 percent to 274,879 units during Q1 2021.

The GM Authority Take

After placing toward the bottom of the pack in Q3, Chevy Trailblazer sales took a leap in Q4, becoming the fifth-best-selling model in the segment despite also being the newest, while also facing internal competition from the more affordable Chevy Trax. The Trailblazer continued to climb in Q1 2021, taking second place in the segment.

We attribute the jump in Q1 to better availability of the vehicle at the dealer level, though inventory has not yet reached optimal levels.

Going forward, we expect Trailblazer sales and market share to continue growing, especially in the near-term future as inventory begins to further improve during 2021 and beyond. Assuming that supply can keep up with demand, we expect the Trailblazer to continue to hold one of the top-selling spots in the segment.
