Chevy Corvette, Corvette E-Ray Win Car And Driver 2024 10Best Award

First breaking cover for the 2020 model year, the C8 Corvette lineup continues to expand, with the 2024 model year ushering in the all-wheel-drive, hybrid-powered Corvette E-Ray, joining the C8 Corvette Z06 and C8 Corvette Stingray as the latest iteration of Chevy’s mid-engine sports car. Now, the C8 Corvette Stingray and C8 Corvette E-Ray have been recognized by Car and Driver with a spot on the publication’s 10Best for 2024 list.

The 10Best for 2024 list was selected with a comparison between new models (either all-new or significantly upgraded) and 10Best winners from the previous model year, with Car and Driver editors giving each competing vehicle an overall score between 1 and 100. The highest and lowest scores for each model were disregarded.

The selection criteria also includes a price limit of $110,000, which means the C8 Corvette Z06, which now starts at $114,395 (including DFC and gas guzzler tax), was exempt from consideration. Nevertheless, the publication’s editors were smitten by the new C8 Corvette E-Ray, while the C8 Corvette Stingray continued to impress.

The publication notes that the entry price for the C8 Corvette is now considerably more expensive than when it first went on sale for the 2020 model year, rising $10,000 for an MSRP of $69,995. Nevertheless, the editors say that the C8 is still “a remarkable value for a car that masterfully blends multiple personalities. Flog it at the track on Saturday, then cruise to church in it on Sunday. Why only drive it when the weather’s warm? Mount some winter tires and drive it year-round.”

The E-Ray was highlighted for its impressive performance, with the onboard hybrid system elevating the sports car’s go-fast prowess, rather than its green credentials. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph takes a mere 2.5 seconds thanks to 655 horsepower and all-wheel grip, making the E-Ray the quickest Corvette the publication has ever tested.

The publication also called the C8’s interior “the best Corvette cabin Chevy has ever done,” although it does note that the interior could be a little cramped for some.

As a reminder, the C8 Corvette rides on the GM Y2 platform, and is produced at the GM Bowling Green plant in Kentucky.

    • Except no one has ever stipulated the E-Ray was developed for fuel efficiency. Additionally, per the article, the E-Ray is the quickest Corvette ever tested.

So why the need to bring up buying the E-Ray for efficiency? Just more unfounded, endless hate for anything using electric motors? Time to leave the past behind and experience what you’ve been missing out on. Or has your license been taken away due to your inability to drive safely?

        • Please detail the exact government funding that GM was provided to develop and produce the E-Ray!

And if you have such an issue with funding toward the development of EVs, why aren’t you complaining about the government funding given to Big Oil?

        • Seems we have all benefitted from Federal tax dollars considering that the interstate highway system was constructed and is maintained and expanded using those Federal tax dollars. Do you dissagree with that too?

        • Despite the name, the E-Ray is a hybrid, it still has a V8 in it. It's not a full EV. You still get the V8 sound and feel with more traction and more power and more efficiency. This is what I want, at least MUCH more than a full EV.

    • I've owned 12 Corvettes (3 Now) and we don't buy them for fuel economy but fuel economy is the result of effective technology. It's just another measurement of a remarkable machine.

  • I canceled my deposit on the Z06 after being on the wait ist for over 2.5 years. I have a deposit on the E-Ray since the day it was announced and the dealer was taking deposits. When I configured it the way I wanted, it came in at $156K which was higher than I anticipated. That all said, let's see how long it will take before I can place an order and get one. Hopefully, it won't be 2.5 years.

    • DrPiz, Yup me too. Same scenario. Here in Az there are Z06 3LZ on the Floor of a couple of Dealers.
They do have " Premiums." (25-50K) Almost bought a Z06 this last weekend, just could not live with the premium.
One dealer I had a Depot on, My Allocation came up... they wanted 125K over MSRP.
I'm dragging them into court. My Paperwork says nothing about a premium.

      • Michael: The dealer I had my Z06 deposit in GA originally stated they would sell it at MSRP. 1.5 yers later when I stopped by the dealer to ask for a status they said no update but we just want to let you know that our Corvette purchase policy changed. While we are still selling at MSRP with are adding mandatory dealer options that every Corvetter buyer has to purchase i.e. ceramic coating, 3M film protection, etc. totalling 15K. A year later I stopped in again to get an update now 2.5 years and they told me we still don't have a date when you can order your Z06 and the dealer options still are mandatory. Needless to say I ask for my deposit back. I will not pay a premium. I went to another dealer to put down a deposit on the E-Ray, I had them state in writing that they would sell me the E-Ray at MSRP with no other dealer install options which he did. Let's see what happens.

        • Yea, really frustrating for sure. In the Same Boat... found one I liked in UTAH. I did offer a 5K incentive from MSRP. They have had 1 CORVETTE, that tells us they have no allocation. They wanted 20K. Not going to happen. This whole process.... is miserable.

  • GM blames constraints on Covid. Tired of hearing that excuse. If you can't produced them fast enough, stop advertising them. Buyers on a waiting list are growing old before they get theirs.

  • Yes, Its too bad the Eray roll out is slow and delayed. For the most part all the 2024 cars are all spoken for with deposits. Hard to get excited on a car corvette just cannot get started building yet.

  • Ahhhh I remember when Corvettes were actually affordable to the everyday man... Now they're just another toy for the rich. Beautiful cars though, I rented one out when I visited Miami with my wife and it was very fun to ride in.

    • For a car that’s not even in production, being recognized as a top ten is quite an accomplishment.
I think I’ll wait for a production model to be evaluated.

      • There has been less than 100 Erays produced and have been tested thoroughly by magazines and quite a few very good Utube professional drivers. All the cars built so far are production cars .

  • Dave, I ordered a 2021 C8 corvette 1LT trim , The MSRP was $61090. That is exactly what I paid. The C8 corvette certainly is affordable and you get a lot of car for that money.

    • I'm glad you got yours and that you're enjoying it Don but I can only dream of getting one at that price. Our dealership only gets the souped up versions which are closer to 100k than 60k and they don't allow customers to order base trims without add-ons agreeing to thousands of dollars worth of add-ons beforehand.

      • Dave the most of the top 30 corvette selling dealers will let you order what ever you want and sell it to you for MSRP. The top 10 can arrange courtesy delivery's to dealers close to you.

  • It seems that the real mistake that gm made was to undervalue and underprice the car. Increasing the price would decrease the demand allowing production to keep up, eliminate the margin of price to value blocking the upmarking by the dealers and resellers while quieting the auto-connoisseurs claiming Corvettes aren't "supercars" because they are "too production" and inexpensive.
Personnally I was totally happy to order my '21 3LT Z-51 coupe and wait nine months for delivery. I would humbly suggest to those of you considering following this path to pick a dealer that specializes in Corvettes. It doesn't have to be local, or even in State. I ordered from a dealer in NJ for MSRP while living in CA; they will deliver. I chose to experience the museum delivery. Highly recommended.
