GM Is Selling Every Truck It Can Build, Says Mary Barra

Despite rising fuel costs and inflated new vehicle prices, GM customers continue to show a strong appetite for large vehicles. At the automaker’s recent shareholder’s meeting in Detroit, chief executive officer Mary Barra said the automaker is “selling every truck we can build,” as quoted by Reuters, and will increase its production capacity for trucks in response.

GM has been running its pickup plants as close to full capacity as it can, even amid the semiconductor chip shortage, but inventory remains tight at the vast majority of dealers nationwide. The automaker brought a new pickup plant online last year after it reopened the Oshawa Assembly plant in southern Ontario, which produces the Chevy Silverado 1500 and Chevy Silverado HD only. The light-duty Silverado and related GMC Sierra 1500 are produced alongside each other at the GM Silao plant in Mexico and GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana, while production of the Silverado HD and Sierra HD takes place at the GM Flint plant in Michigan.

Barra also reiterated the automaker’s strategy of using profits from its hugely popular truck model lines to help fund its transition to electric vehicles during the shareholder’s meeting on Monday. She added that the automaker is exploring even more luxurious and higher-priced versions of certain full-size truck and SUV models to help capitalize on these models’ profitability even further, Reuters reports, but stopped short of providing further details.

GM recently introduced the 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V, a 682 horsepower full-size luxury SUV that will be priced from $149,990 including destination and freight charges, making it the priciest Cadillac ever offered. The new Sierra Denali Ultimate has also been introduced for the 2023MY, which expands on the full-size truck’s premium Denali trim level with Vader chrome exterior trim, exclusive 22-inch wheels, Paldao wood trim, a power sunroof and a 12-speaker Bose audio system, among more.

The automaker will introduce the next-generation 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon mid-size pickups later this year, as well, which will be produced at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. The next-gen trucks will feature revised exterior styling, an overhauled cabin with new tech and a more up-to-date powertrain consisting of the GM turbocharged 2.7L L3B four-cylinder gasoline engine and 10-speed automatic transmission.

  • Sure Mary. Sure.
In reality truck/suv demand is falling especially with soaring fuel prices, interest rates, and a recession.

    • It's become in vogue these days to disregard information that doesn't match your preconceived notions of the world. Barra has to be careful about what she says because a materially false statement would almost certainly lead to an SEC investigation, lawsuits, and fines. So while there are challenges today, they do not appear to be impacting demand for GM trucks.

      • He is right that demand is slowing. Theres just a : year backlog keeping it up from a crazy demand to normal demand.

    • Yep. Go green buy a 250K hand built cad or 150k suv. Marys more outta touch than the whitehouse... oh wait shes on the DHS committee...she is the white house

  • Hey Gm how about shipping the trucks that you have sold already to the customers that are waiting for them. My truck was built the week of 5/23 and I still don't have a ETA yet!!! SMH

    • How crazy is it that I can buy a $20 item online from Home Depot (or most any other online company) and get an email / text the day they got my order, another when they ship my order, another telling me where it is, then another that it has arrived. Yet gm cannot (will not) tell you anything about a $70,000 truck?

      • it's unbelievable. GM should work right now in a decent tracker system to make the relationship with the customers better.

          • Imagine how filthy a truck sitting since November would be? Dash pad wharped from the sun and in need of a clay blocking minimum.

        • I understand the notion here, but such a system following every VIN through each stage of production would be incredibly complex and costly. I don’t think any automaker would see a sustainable business case for this across their full lineups.

          • GM already has one. How do you think that they find out which vehicles to recall? Roll the dice? I watched a documentary called Factory about the building of the new Camaro and every major assembly was documented to the VIN of each car as it was being assembled.

          • I’m talking about communicating out to customers the same ways FedEx does for package delivery updates. That type of system is expensive. Their system to track for recalls is required by law. Same base; different branches.

    • Sure I'll tell you where it is... it's in a holding yard waiting for the trucker shortage to end.

      • I’m currently leasing a 2019 Sierra Denali. My dealership kept me informed throughout the assembly process by tracking the assigned VIN: The expected completion time. Quality control process. When the truck was put on a train from Fort Wayne, IN. When it was put on a truck for delivery. Tracking those trucks is a snap. It’s B.S. if the say otherwise (especially with reduced inventory).

      • How about high gas prices that cause all the truckers to protest. It’s not fair when truckers lives are destroyed to take it out on them.

      • I thought all the vehicles trucked were by the teamsters? Can't believe they would have any shortages?

        • Offer the option to the customer for a true factory delivery. If the customer is now paying for dealer delivery, give them that money back.

    • I agree- SHIP THE VEHIVLES YOU SAY ARE BUILT. Make it a priority ! My Silverado 2500 HD was built November 2021. Still not shipped... Nothing to do with truckers, Rail is the way its shipped for the most part. I could write a book on "how not to treat a customer" with this experience. But this world economy crap doesn't care , its all about the money and profit . Seems like we are linked together with this mess.
That's what happens when you send production outside of the country and not build here.
I guess this game is here to stay for a while.

    • Here is my story: Order placed Feb 4th for LTZ, 6.2. Scheduled for production week of April 25th. Email on May 9th said truck “was produced”. Arrived from Ft Wayne plant to dealer in Stuart IA (just west of Des Moines) on Tuesday June 14th. So approximately 7 weeks from “vehicle produced” to arrival at dealer just two states away. Of note, my truck was a crew cab so I was expecting delayed delivery from Mexico, but there must be a backup just shipping out vehicles made in Indiana. And don’t expect any informative emails from GM. After the May 9th email saying it was produced, the next 6 weekly emails said delivery will take place next until the dealer called me and said it had arrived. Of course my truck came from Indiana, who knows about trucks having to be delivered from Mexico.

      • GM Oshawa plant in Canada is no help to inventory needs either. GM maid it sound like this facility would help with all the demand for Silverado trucks. My truck has been there "built ready to ship "
since November 2021. If its built , why don't they ship it before building more? Makes me wonder how you can buy material, parts, labor and pay all the overhead and not ship the completed vehicles out . I am missing something here. Does GM have that kind of money lying around to float all the expenses of their debt and not get a return.?

    • I ordered a truck in December, said it was built in April. Found out 3 weeks ago the tires were on back order. I agreed to have them send it with shipping tires and I would purchase rims and tires from another company. Still nothing. It has been in pending dispatch since April. I heard that the government is only allowing GM to ship so many vehicles who get below 28 mpg. They are only allowed to release so many vehicles. So Mary Barra....you are a liar. Check your Canadian plant. A truck driver said there are 12K trucks sitting all over their Canadian plant ready to ship

  • GM trucks are getting uglier. I'm a long time GM fan but the new Chevy Silverado is ridiculous. The 2011-2016 LML Duramax was the last truck to look like a Chevy.

  • Ok - how about the bottom part of the market?
A small two seat truck with a maual transmission, 4 cylinder engine and a 6 foot bed?

  • Mary I've been trying to purchase a Siverado Trail boss since January 25th ...
Your customer service site is a total waist of money !
your dealers have very little to do with the current debacle! as a matter of fact I've seen dealers tring to charge 10k over MSRP.... All the dealers say there reason is because they can't get new truck...hmmmm
    shame on you and GM.
Let me just through this out to you...Check the status of my very last try....."BNPNVN"
I'm willing to bet i never hear a thing..!

  • “Selling every truck we can build” all trucks made are sold…. Eventually.

Production has slowed to a crawl and you have a backlog of orders. You will sell every vehicle you make when they are already retail sold on event code 1100. No stock at the dealer requires customers to order as dealer stock is non existent.

In recent times locking in an order has become the only “incentive” available as in the six months it takes the truck to show up the price is thousands more.

    This is very political statement.

    • Mary is very political. She should run for congress…… she’d probably loose. Americans don’t want politicians in Washington. That why more and more thier sending loudmouths reality TV stars and ex businessmen.

  • I own my Last GM product; my 2016 Silverado 4x4 ddb cab 6.2 engine. About the last year a GM/Chevy truck, looked decent! I'm also struck with the 8 speed and faulty engine lifters. With the Thousands, of complaints about GM products, over the last 10 years, Who would re-purchase this brand? Just shows how many others, have Not owned one or done their research. I, like Thousands of others, will never purchase a GM product again!

    • Rodney -

I hear ya... You spend a fortune for supposedly an upscale Truck and then have engine, transmission, and - you didn't mention it, but several Silverado owners have complained about 12 volt batteries going dead, and then the 'Infotainment' system going nuts everytime you start the car with a weak battery..

All I can say is that for the past 11 years I have had good luck with the GM plug in products... Yes they are much simpler, but there are aspects of their design that show decent engineering, such as really beefy gear trains compared to the available power of the motor - therefore, I expect zero problems with the drive train EVER.

Why GM seems to be designing the EVs at a minimum OK to probably 'pretty good' - yet turning out expensive Junk trucks is beyond me.....Daimler seems to do the same thing - which probably explains why RAM is getting so many 'Converts'.

  • Of course Mary, you sell everyone of the trucks GM builds, if not you guys would go under. They also seem to sell quickly when there is not much product out there. GM has failed the American people by using offshore companies to manufacture products for your vehicles, but when these items are manufactured wholly by these offshore entities you put yourself at their mercy. Maybe you'll learn from this latest debacle that you keep your product base on your home soil and only supplement these items from offshore. As expensive as new vehicles are now, do you really think that the consumer will actually notice a thousand dollar increase if the parts are manufactured here in America? It might actually help the sales knowing that this is really an American made and built truck. The last year the price of trucks went up over $10,000 from compared to the 2021 trucks. GM needs to get their house in order.

  • Queen Mary Barra and Sleepy Joe Biden have something in common..."they both lie through their teeth"...if their lips are moving they're lying! Simply put they both (Queen Mary and Sleepy Joe) "have it made"...they can say whatever they want to say, and whenever they want to say it, and of course there are those who'll accept what they are telling you is gospel, when in reality, it's always what they think you want to hear. Lets face it, they're both "over paid political hacks"....if Mary Barra was such a great CEO, GM would not be in the mess it's in now (same goes for Joe Biden...pathetic politicians both of them) and until GM and America attains a real honest to god "Pro American" leader running things, you're going to get what you get, and all of the b*tching and moaning isn't going to change a thing.
Sadly, these two knuckleheads (Mary and Joe) are in control of things, and believe me we've all seen "better days" before these two came into power...so pull your big boy pants up and realize that things are going to remain a disaster because you've got two of the phoniest, most politically motivated leaders "running the asylum" with an administration full of "yes people" who are powerless to actually think for themselves, lest they get quickly removed and barred from ever working for either GM and the Government again!
Okay, 'Nuff said, let the non-believers report back or throw some darts at my summation of these two pathetic jokers, but just remember, things were better BEFORE these two clowns took over and it can be BETTER again "when they leave office"
and you put someone into their respective positions with "America First" programs in mind and stay the hell out of China because they have plans for America, and not good plans either, and unfortunately these two (Joe and Mary) are "sleeping with the enemy" (China) and if you're actually paying attention to what's been going on, you'll see that China has made it's way into America a lot farther than any of us really know, and we've got "Queen Mary & Sleepy Joe" to thank for this.

  • Resale value on all these monstertrucks is going to get worse and worse as the Build Back Better War on petroleum/carbon/coal/America/everyday Americans continues.

Meanwhile, Divisionator in Chief Obama is having three propane tanks with a combined capacity of 2,500 gallons installed to serve the "energy needs" of his Twelve-Million Dollar estate on Martha's Vineyard. How will the Secret Service protect the kingly spread from the imminent rising seas the hypocrite crook and his fellow loathsome New World Order climate change pimping, race baiting traitors can't shut the Hell up about for more than five minutes?

Well, thank goodness propane is excellent for both heating and cooking so the professional chef will be able to prepare consistently great meals for the Royal Family. But why aren't any of these hacks talking about propane powered engines in cars while they insistently ram the "transition to EVs" down everyone's throat? Since propane is energy rich and produces very little pollution compared to gasoline or even CNG, you would think that if they really cared about the environment, they might also be working on increasing propane fuel infrastructure and viability to power private ICE vehicles and promoting ongoing biodiesel development and improvement as well.

But what's happening now has nothing to do with any of that. This is about pricing the greater percentage of the eaters out of vehicle ownership altogether, herding them into cities where they will be required to walk, ride bikes or share "community" transportation and finally, monitoring and controlling them via mandatory smartphone or under-skin embedded microchip Vaccine Passports and Social Credit systems. If they expect to eat, that is. Bugs and the country's largest holder of farmland Gate's laboratory-made meat. Owning nothing and being happy...

    • @ idiot boy your name fits well. What does any of that have to do with GM selling trucks ? Didn't your momma tell u if u don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all!!

      • It has everything to do with the ridiculous unflappable sales of trucks. American's rejection of fuel efficient vehicles in favor of these monsters as everyday transportation is a large part of what's driving the government's war, Treavus. My momma taught me not to beat around the bush.
