General Motors began early production of the Chevy Tracker at the GM Alvear plant located in the city of Rosario, Argentina, according to sources familiar with the matter. Insiders have revealed that the automaker built the first pre-series units of the Tracker earlier this week at the Argentine complex, which has received a significant investment to build the subcompact crossover starting this year.
Employees and suppliers of the Alvear plant confirmed to Motor1 Argentina the start of pre-series production of the Chevy Tracker at the factory, which GM has been remodeling for the addition of a new model that the company has not yet officially communicated. With this confirmation, the vehicle of the so-called “High Added Value” project (AVA for its acronym in Spanish) is definitely the new Tracker.
The Alvear plant notably becomes the third Chevy Tracker manufacturing center worldwide after the SAIC-GM Norsom plant in China and the GM São Caetano do Sul plant in Brazil. The factory had been exclusively manufacturing the Chevy Cruze and its 1.4L LE2 I-4 turbocharged engine for the last five years to supply the domestic market, Brazil and some countries in the region, being the only GM facility in the world that still manufactures the compact car.
Until now, the Chevy Tracker arrived in Argentina imported from Brazil with units manufactured at the São Caetano do Sul plant, which is responsible for supplying the vast majority of international markets where it is sold. As such, the start of production of the Tracker in Argentina will allow the Brazilian plant to better serve the high accumulated demand for the model in the domestic market of Brazil and in other Latin American countries such as Mexico.
In addition, by sharing South American manufacturing responsibility for the highly popular Chevy Tracker with the Alvear complex, GM frees up space at the São Caetano do Sul plant to build more units of the next-generation Chevy Montana. This will allow it to compete for sales leadership in Brazil’s competitive compact pickup segment while also exporting the new Montana to other countries.
The fourth-generation Chevy Tracker was first launched in Argentina in mid-July 2020, right in the midst of the serious difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Alvear plant simultaneously received a significant investment of 500 million dollars to update its production lines by adapting them to the GEM platform. The Argentine-made Tracker is expected to be launched during the second half of the year.

with the price of gas , Gm needs more fuel efficient models !!
