2020 Buick Encore GX Fuel Economy Figures Released By EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency has released its official fuel economy estimates for the 2020 Buick Encore GX, which is expected to go on sale in North America in the coming months.

The 2020 Encore GX with the base turbocharged 1.2L LIH three-cylinder engine and front-wheel drive has an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 26 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined. The 1.2-liter engine, good for 137 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque, is paired with a continuously variable transmission in the Encore GX and is only available with front-wheel drive.

The crossover’s more powerful and slightly larger turbocharged 1.3L L3T three-cylinder engine, which makes 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, is actually more efficient than the entry-level 1.2L. The EPA estimates this engine will return 30 mpg city and 32 mpg highway in the front-wheel-drive 2020 Encore GX, giving it a combined rating of 31 mpg.

All-wheel-drive versions of the Encore GX will tap the 1.3L engine as well and will return 26 mpg city and 29 mpg highway for a combined rating of 27 mpg. Adding all-wheel drive also trades the CVT for a GM nine-speed automatic.

When equipped with the most efficient powertrain combination, that being the 1.3L engine with FWD, the 2020 Encore GX will cost owners about $1,250 in fuel annually, the EPA estimates. Base level 1.2L models and 1.3L models with all-wheel drive should accrue about $1,400 in fuel costs annually.

The new 1.2L and 1.3L three-cylinder engines are the first three-cylinders offered by General Motors in North America since the 2001 Geo Metro. The development of small engines has come a long way since then, with the Metro’s naturally aspirated 1.0-liter base engine making just 55 horsepower and 58 pound-feet of torque. By comparison, the new 1.3L L3T engine is nearly three times as powerful and has exactly three times as much torque.

GM’s new three-cylinder engines are built at its Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico and are then shipped to GM Korea’s Bupyeong facility in Incheon, South Korea, which is building both the 2020 Buick Encore GX and the related 2020 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Buick’s website indicates the crossover will go on sale this spring. Pricing has yet to be announced, though the Trailblazer starts at $19,995 before destination, so we imagine the Encore GX will start in the low-to-mid $20,000 range at the highest.

  • mazda cx-30 costs thousands less, has a more powerful engine, has a better power train, has better gas mileage, and looks better inside/out than the encore gx.

not to worry. everyone knows buick is a premier luxury brand that outclasses BMWs.

    • Actually the Buick is larger and will be more powerful under the foot, the Turbocharged engine will make far better low end power as opposed to NA 2.5...In the end the Buick will be the better car and it will sell far more then the mazda will

      • buick encore gx overall length : 171.4 vs 173 for the cx-30.
on the pudgy metric, the winner is the buick.

        • encore GX is 175.4" long...its also 5" taller then the CX30 and will hold 8',5" length items inside withthe seats folded down.... all in the all the new GM platform is a bigger vehicle...

          • i see it listed both ways...i guess we need to wait till Chevy/Buick publishes official numbers.... In the end all I know is that this new Encore GX/Trailblazer platform is going to sell really well, its big enough, nice enough and affordable enough to meet the needs a huge market segment... I see it all the time too on the sales floor... Encore is too small and quirky, Envision is too expensive, regal is too expensive..

          • I got my hands on the Encore GX at the Boston Auto Show. I also have had quality time with the CX-30. The Encore GX certainly has the Mazda beat on storage options. The GX Sport Touring has a surprisingly imposing and athletic presence in person.

Buick is going for flashy. Mazda is doing the Zen thing. If I had to pick one today I would go with the Buick.

      • I wonder in the long term usage (think on-the-road salesperson) how long the engine will last, a friend of mine has the Encore, and it's been bullet proof. Interstate driving needs kinda make me worry if the 3-cyc will last. Money wise, I've been looking at the Caddy XT-4, the money is about the same and it's drive line is proven.

    • steve the Buick troll hits again with his false statements. No, the CX30 does NOT costs thousands less. Yes, the CX30 has more HP, but your post also says a better power train. That's your opinion. My experience with selling Mazda currently is that the 2.5L engine Mazda uses would not be considered better. I've seen my fair share of them being pulled and replaced by Mazda. Plus, look at where Mazda ranks with J.D. Power. Not even close to Buick. Saying the CX30 has better MPG is not true. It's really a wash. Saying it looks better inside and out? You are truly delusional sir.

Your last comment only shows that you are also still trolling me. Don't you have a life?

      • junior, what is the jd powuhhh rating between mazdas and chevys? because you know, the encore gx is basically a chevy.

but according to some, buicks are better than bmws so by the transitive law, chevys are better than bmws!!!! i better head out to my chevy dealer before word gets out on this amazing discovery.

        • Hey steve, the receptionist at the Mazda service called. The toilet is plugged again. Seems they need you to grab your tools and flush the turds. Then mob up the overflow will you?

          • wow!!! color me surprised!!! great work dan. to think chevrolet/buick have better reliability than Toyota, Honda, Mazda, MB, BMW, and Audi. too bad Maaaahk and 99% of people don't believe that.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MSH7yGT2Ac

and here i thought you were off your meds when you told me buicks are better than bmws.

now go dig up those MSRP numbers i requested before you go on your break.

          • No need to "dig up" those MSRP numbers, as it's only you who thinks the CX30 is "thousands" less than the Encore GX when Buick hasn't even announced the MSRP numbers for the Encore GX. Hmmm. Obviously I know the numbers on the CX30. You don't. Neither of us know them on the GX.

And yes, Buick's are better than BMW's and many others. Thanks for noticing.

  • After reading this, I now know that I will be keeping my current Encore. Although a little less powerful, I'll keep my 1.4L 4cyl and the much preferred 6 speed automatic. I can see no reason to accept the CVT if I'm not going to get a bunch better MPG's. However, I do like the looks of the GX just a little more. If Buick decides to come out with the Avenir trim and put the 2.0L Turbo and 9 speed auto in it, then sign me up.

  • This CUV is just silly, and I love GM. The Regal TourX nearly matches the AWD MPG, has 100 HP more and is WAY quicker, has WAY more room inside, handles better, looks better (my opinion) and is arguable probably built better (my opinion).

  • Seriously.... I'll take the smaller engine please.. big fat discount with that
I'm blind and dont see the fuel efficiency numbers.... who would buy the base engine
    Wheres the performance engine
I'll give it til all the testers see or feel the engine before it is declared a pos...

  • So losing a cylinder, a little engine weight and changing over to a CVT and 9 speed automatic basically did..... well nothing much. Mary Barra's engineering team basically pull a rabbit out of a hat expect there is no bunny hiding in there!
