The GMC Savana is the oldest GM model currently in production and one of America’s longest-produced automotive designs. Alongside its corporate cousin, the Chevy Express, it first came out in 1996 and got a refresh in 2003, but has been in the same generation for nearly 30 years. The 2025 GMC Savana doesn’t bring any new updates, but discontinues a handful of features like a USB port, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Now, GM Authority has learned that the start of regular production (SORP) for the 2025 GMC Savana has been delayed. This reminds us that all production dates are tentative until the vehicle actually rolls off the assembly line.
As we previously covered, the 2025 GMC Savana was originally scheduled to go into production on October 7th, 2024. Now, The General has postponed the start of 2025 Savana production by 10 days to October 17th, though this date is once again tentative and subject to change. This applies to all three configurations of the Savana: Cargo, Passenger, and Cutaway.
GM Authority recently reported that General Motors is rolling the BrightDrop electric commercial vans into the Chevy brand. Now that Chevy has another line of commercial vans (which could eventually be shared with GMC), this could be a sign that production of the GMC Savana and Chevy Express could finally be nearing an end, at least for the Cargo variants.
As previously mentioned, the GMC Savana is offered in multiple unique configurations, namely the Savana Cargo, Savana Passenger, and Savana Cutaway, all designed to fill a specific role. Powerplant options include the naturally aspirated 4.3L V6 LV1 gasoline engine, rated at 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque, and the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. Notably, the previous 2.8L I4 LWN turbodiesel Duramax engine was dropped for the 2023 model year.
The 2025 GMC Savana rides on the GMT 610 platform, and it’s produced at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. Notably, the Savana Cutaway is also produced by Navistar at a separate facility in Ohio.

Best and most reliable van ever. Please don't denigrate it like removing the leather covered steering wheel. Geesh....
Work at the Wentzville plant for 45 years, we have great work force and hope to continue to build the BEST van ever.
Wade,
You must have some insight to the future of these vans. How about filling us in?
Will the production numbers be sufficient so these can be bought without the upgrade shelfs and associated 7000$ markups.
