GM Active On Twitter For The First Time In 8 Months

Yesterday, the official GM Twitter account (@GM) made its first tweet in eight months after being inactive on the social media platform since October 27th, 2022. GM announced it would halt ad spending on Twitter late last year in the wake of the platform’s purchase by Elon Musk. On Thursday, the GM Twitter account announced that it was teaming up with Tesla to provide GM EV owners with access to the Tesla Supercharger network.

Following Elon Musk’s $44 billion Twitter buyout, GM announced it would suspend advertising efforts on the platform in order to “understand the direction of the platform under their new ownership.”

“As is normal course of business with a significant change in a media platform, we have temporarily paused our paid advertising,” GM told CNBC in an emailed statement. “Our customer care interactions on Twitter will continue.”

Several GM-affiliated Twitter accounts went inactive as well, including:

  • @GMFleet
  • @GMcanada
  • @Buick
  • @BuickCanada
  • @Cadillac
  • @CadillacCanada
  • @Chevrolet
  • @ChevroletCanada
  • @ChevyTrucks
  • @GMC
  • @GMCcanada
  • @mtbarra (GM CEO Mary Barra)

However, some GM-affiliated accounts remained active, including @OnStar, @brightdrop, @Cruise, and @kvogt (Cruise CEO Kyle Vogt).

This week, @GM was active again, tweeting the announcement that GM was teaming up with Tesla to provide GM EV customers with access to 12,000 Tesla Superchargers throughout North America. GM EV customers will be able to access the Supercharger network beginning early next year. Elon Musk currently serves as CEO at Tesla.

In addition to providing access to the Tesla Supercharger Network, GM also announced this week that it would adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) in new GM EVs starting in 2025. The NACS was originally developed by Tesla.

“Our vision of the all-electric future means producing millions of world-class EVs across categories and price points, while creating an ecosystem that will accelerate mass EV adoption,” said GM CEO Mary Barra in conjunction with the recent announcements. “This collaboration is a key part of our strategy and an important next step in quickly expanding access to fast chargers for our customers. Not only will it help make the transition to electric vehicles more seamless for our customers, but it could help move the industry toward a single North American charging standard.”

  • The amount of time and money companies wasted in past years listening to fake Twitter accounts, trolls, and manufactured outrage instead of their real customers is staggering.

    • Because it's much easier to sit down, log in, and extract all of the garbage on Twitter that you can stomach than to actually hit the pavement and go talk to real buyers.

      Setting up survey booths at dealerships would be a great place to start.

  • Twitter has no influence over my daily life period. Never has and never will. I don’t care who owns it.

    • Same. I stay off of social media as much as I can. It's a cesspool. I only use Facebook for Marketplace, and if there was a better alternative (like Craigslist having a resurgence) I'd drop it in a heartbeat.

    • All of that triggered knee-jerk reaction from the lefties over Twitter's unfairness.....or something.
