Here’s When 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Production Will Start

Production of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 will commence this August, GM Authority has learned.

The start of regular production (SORP) for the light-duty 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is scheduled to begin on August 29th, which applies to both Regular Cab and Crew Cab models. Production of Double Cab models, meanwhile, will commence one week later on September 6th.

As we reported previously, production of the 2023 GMC Sierra HD will begin on July 18th, 2022. The Sierra HD is produced at the GM Flint plant in Michigan, while the light-duty Sierra 1500 is produced at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and GM Silao plant in Mexico.

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 will see the introduction of the new 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine to the powertrain lineup. The new LZ0 engine will replace the 3.0L I6 LM2 engine option and is expected offer the same performance/output specs, although it may have improved emissions and/or fuel economy.

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 will offer four engine options total. In addition to the aforementioned LZ0 turbodiesel, the lineup will also include the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, and the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine. The full-size truck rides on the GM T1 platform.

Some units of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 that would normally be equipped with Rear Park Assist (RPO code UD7) and Front and Rear Park Assist (RPO code UD5) will not include these features at launch due to the semiconductor chip shortage, as we reported previously. It’s unclear when these features will return to regular availability on the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500.

More information on the 2023 model-year GMC Sierra 1500 will be divulged closer to its official arrival later this summer. In the meantime, be sure to subscribe to GM Authority for more GMC Sierra news, GMC news, and around-the-clock GM news coverage.
