GMC Hummer EV Pre-Production Now Underway At Factory Zero Plant

General Motors has begun pre-production of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup at its Factory Zero plant in Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan.

Pre-production versions of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup began rolling off the assembly line at Factory Zero this week, UAW Local 22 President Wiley Turnage told The Detroit Free Press in an interview. The plant is still undergoing renovations in preparation for the start of series production later this year.

Around 435 employees are currently working on pre-production of the new battery-electric pickup truck. GM has said the Factory Zero plant, which represents a $2.2 billion investment from GM, will eventually employ up to 2,200 people once running at full capacity. In addition to the GMC Hummer EV Pickup, the facility will eventually add the GMC Hummer EV SUV to its roster, along with the Cruise Origin robotaxi and the Chevy Silverado EV.

With the start of pre-production this week, Turnage said the plant is on schedule to begin deliveries of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup Edition 1 “later this year.” The Edition 1 represents the range-topping trim level for 2022 and is priced from $112,595. It will come standard with a three-motor powertrain producing more than 1,000 horsepower, which will be able to propel the 9,000-pound pickup from zero to 60 mph in three seconds flat, with range-per-charge sitting at around 350 miles.

Other standard equipment on the Edition 1 trim level will include an Extreme Off-Road Package with 18-inch wheels and 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory tires, Infinity Roof panels, 800-volt DC fast charging capability and the latest version of GM’s hands-free Super Cruise technology. This trim will only be available in a white exterior with a unique Lunar Horizon interior and special ‘Edition 1’ interior badging.

GM has received around 10,000 pre-orders for the GMC Hummer EV so far. Not all pre-orders are for the Edition 1 trim level, which sold out in a matter of minutes following the vehicle’s debut earlier this year. Lesser trim levels will include the tri-motor Hummer EV^3X, dual-motor Hummer EV^2X and the entry-level Hummer EV². The EV3X will enter production in the Fall of 2022, followed by the EV2X in Spring 2023 and finally the EV2 in Spring 2024.
