GM Opens Expanded Advanced Design Center In China

Eight months after announcing a significant expansion of its Advanced Design Center in Shanghai, General Motors has just inaugurated the new facilities of its main creative studio in China, which is an important part of the company’s global design network. This massive upgrade doubles GM China’s advanced design capabilities and will help accelerate the development of electric vehicles.

GM China’s Advanced Design Center now boasts a much more flexible creative space as well as advanced specialized equipment, processes and technologies that put it at the forefront of attracting the best automotive designers from around the world. From now on, the facility will primarily focus on visualizing the design of future electric and autonomous vehicles, drawing inspiration from the world’s largest electric vehicle market.

“Innovation allows us to adopt the best solutions available in a quick and agile way. We believe we now have the right strategy and the right technologies,” said GM Executive Vice President and President of GM China, Julian Blissett, in a statement. “We also believe that with facilities like the new GM China Advanced Design Center and its growing team of professionals, we have the right organizations and people to bring the most desirable products to China’s consumers in the new era of electrification and connectivity,” he added.

New to the expanded GM China Advanced Design Center are two full-size milling platforms, a color, material and finish (CMF) study, a head-mounted display (HMD) study, a virtual reality room, an atrium with variable color temperatures and 27 revolving glass doors as well as a backyard. All this makes it one of the most advanced design centers of its kind in the Asian country.

In fact, this massive expansion and upgrade of GM’s Advanced Design Center in Shanghai seeks to create a huge impact in order to bring in the next generation of designers and sculptors by pooling more local design talent, which is considered one of the best in the world. The automaker will gradually expand the design center’s staff to continue providing information on trends in the automotive and fashion sectors.

“The evolution of technology has opened up new opportunities for designers to create the future of mobility,” said Michael Simcoe, Vice President of GM Global Design. “We hope the upgraded facility will provide an ideal environment for our Shanghai team to imagine, create, inspire and develop design strategies for GM’s future portfolio,” he added.

Although the GM China Advanced Design Center team will focus on the local market, it will also cooperate with the company’s global design teams at the Warren Technical Center and the California Advanced Design Center in the U.S., the Korea Technical Center as well as the PATAC joint venture to comprehend the latest automotive design trends and set new benchmarks in future mobility.

    • Do they want the best designers, or the cheapest? "Ushering a new era of connectivity" in Shanghai? Isn't this the place where their government will literally jail someone for a different political opinion or religion? Is lowercase gm going to start investing in Chinese internment camps next? Every penny they give to that country is supporting a significant amount of human rights violations. Genuinely disappointing to see lowercase gm pouring money into a country that doesn't even pretend to care about human rights :(

      • On the surface, marketing spin that showcases a international unification of gm designers... But in China, International means CCP Red China not real international talent - just Chinese. Make no mistake, the Chinese run CCP won't allow other nationalities to outshine the locals. Just like the space advancements, stolen US technology advances China and cousin Google aids with AI to advance China. That's right and Google denied to supprt US with AI...

gm sees 2 cars per Chinese family ...$$$$$
With our current administration, China is their oyster and headed by Hunter... lol...
China allows the US to invest in China, makes billions and buys US companies and politicians - no shots fired and takes over according to the Chinese 100 year Manifesto.

The liberal critics will bash me...it's ok. Can't hide the truth.
        US greed making China

  • First off they still design cars here.

Second they sell many times more cars in China than here.

Like China or not they are the only real growing automotive market in the world. You ether go there a bear the hassles to survive or you fail to go and you merge. Or go out of business.

    • My Company was buying about 30 GM vehicles per year no more for me I will search out other more American made vehicle's. Will not support a country that caused the the biggest pandemic the world has ever seen.

    • Kiss China's ass and $$$ if you want; I'll have no part of it. And maybe gm SHOULD go out of business if they feel like they must partner with such an evil government in order to make a dirty dollar.

  • They should just move everything there.

Honda and Toyota are more American than GM anyways.

  • I remember when some said we should not worry when US manufacturing jobs are offshore since design and engineering jobs are not going anyplace and are far better than those "factory rat" jobs. Well, offshoring has come full circle to engulf the entire value chain.

  • We are witnessing the beginning of the downfall of what was at one time the greatest engineering and manufacturing company in the world. smh.................................

  • Why china..????????????????? Keep the work HERE in the USA..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Traitor..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Marketing, propagandizing and normalizing the dismantlement and sellout of our country and its finest institutions to our mortal enemies is in full swing. Our reality is worse than that of the dystopian novels that were not long ago considered far fetched. Our forefathers are absolutely spinning in their graves.

  • Selling cars in China one thing, teaching Chinese to secrets of car design is another. I didn't like this unnecessary move. It's not like GM run out of designs and so need some Chinese spice.

  • This will be my last GM suv owned all of them for 50+ yrs Covid everyone boycott CHINA They are the worlds predator's keep it up and they will be taking over our country without a fight -take it to them!!!
