Study Says Ford F-150 Lightning More Impressive Than GMC Hummer EV, Chevy Silverado EV

The majority of American consumers find the Ford F-150 Lightning more impressive than the GMC Hummer EV or the yet-to-be-unveiled Chevy Silverado EV, according to a recent study conducted by research firm Piplsay.

The Piplsay study asked 27,870 Americans which of the crop of latest battery-electric pickup trucks they were most impressed by. The Ford F-150 Lightning came out on top in the survey, with 32 percent of participants saying they are most impressed by the new battery-powered Blue Oval truck. The Tesla Cybertruck was second at 24 percent, followed by the yet-to-be-unveiled Chevy Silverado EV at 21 percent and the GMC Hummer EV at 12 percent.

The survey also asked participants which electric truck they’d be most interested in purchasing. Not surprisingly, the responders were mostly the same, with the Ford F-150 leading the way at 25 percent, followed by the Tesla Cybertruck at 24 percent, the Chevy Silverado EV at 23 percent and the GMC Hummer EV at 12 percent. The most important factors when buying a truck to these consumers were performance specifications, followed by battery range, branding, features and looks.

While the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Hummer EV lagged behind rivals from Ford and Tesla in this study, it’s worth noting that the Chevy Silverado EV has not yet been unveiled. For a vehicle that no one knows anything about, we’d say its performance in this study is impressive. The GMC Hummer EV, meanwhile, is being marketed as a high-end lifestyle off-roader and is thus not a direct rival to the Ford F-150 Lightning and Tesla Cybertruck. It’s also much more expensive than the Ford or the Tesla, narrowing the scope of potential buyers.

While the winner of the EV pickup truck sales race is yet-to-be-determined, one thing is clear: electric pickups aren’t going anywhere. Roughly 25 percent of survey participants said they’d be interested in buying an electric pickup truck sometime in the near future – a fairly high figure considering EVs still have a long way to go with regard to range, charger access and overall affordability.

  • Specs and price are the two most important factors according to the survey...
The Ford is quickly associated with lower price but the specs are spectacular for EV, charging times are pretty bad, range is unimpressive and ratings are basically half ton market. Compared to the Hummers high price and accompanying higher spec sheet I think the Hummers showing is concerning. It seems like it should have placed closer to the Cybertruck - not distant behind the (as mentioned) only announced Silverado EV. I suspect the GM/Hummer history is still weighing heavy on the publics perception of it.

  • Lets wait until GM unveils the Silverado Ev, and GMC Sierra EV before we declare the winner, I think GM has some rabbits to pull out of the hat soon...

Then we can see who gets to production first, and how the sales go. I think GM is going to dominate in the short term with multiple offerings, Tesla is the wildcard, how many muskrats with buy the Cybertruck?

  • They're all too heavy, overpriced, and too limited in range. At least the F150 doesn't scream look at me I'm an EV!. Wait till these things need brakes and tires, will cost arm and a leg. Registrations based on weight class won't be cheap, either. Lotta negatives with these vehicles.

    • Not really True, where I live the Hummer will avoid taxes due to its weight. As for brakes, Hummer will never need brake pads, as the electric motors due most of the braking in an EV. Hydraulic brakes are just there for emergencies. Tires will be expensive, just like they are for Raptor, Ram TRX, and other off road focused vehicles

  • The Hummer targets a different class of customers. After all, unless enthusiast, whos gonna care about sth way above their budget.

  • The Silverado EV hasn’t been introduced or seen anywhere, so how can you possibly make any comparison. This is another example of shoddy reporting, no knowledge of what their reporting AT ALL. Totally irresponsible. Do you think for one second GM won’t respond to Ford’s low price, and for the comment on the hummer and oral sex, what a flipping idiot, shows you’re intellect right up front. Only in the good old USA would we get so many irrelevant comments. And everyone of these trucks will be battery heavy, think before you comment.

  • Wow? What a comparison an electric Ford pickup truck, against something that looks like it came out of a bad Jetsons cartoon, against the Hummer which is not a pickup truck, must have hit his head before he wrote it, or got a bad
    Hummer 🙃

  • 2 different markets and price range. They both look good. Only 1 I can not stand the looks of is the tesla to me it is down right ugly.

  • The writer should write facts --- not fictions. I find it funny when He calls it a survey. I guess anyone can write a BS story, and try to get away with it. It's obvious this writer is a Ford fan..
