Nissan has unveiled the seventh-generation Z sports car. When it hits the U.S. market next year, the all-new 2023 Nissan Z will rival the Chevy Camaro.
The next-gen 2023 Nissan Z arrives as a replacement for the previous sixth-generation Nissan 370Z, which debuted in 2009. Interestingly, the new Z drops the numeric naming conventions of previous generations.
Outside, the 2023 Nissan Z takes its styling cues from last year’s Nissan Z Proto concept, evolving the aesthetic of previous Z models. That includes a low, wide stance, with cab-back proportions and a long hood line.
The cabin space includes two seats, while behind the steering wheel, there’s a customizable 12.3-inch TFT instrument display. Three analog gauges are mounted high on the dash and angled towards the driver, providing readouts on turbocharger boost, turbo rpm, and a voltmeter. Leather upholstery and an eight-speaker Bose stereo are also offered.
As for the greasy bits, the 2023 Nissan Z features a twin-turbocharged 3.0L V6 engine. Output is rated at 400 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, all of which is directed towards the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic. Get the three-pedal option, and the drivetrain includes a high-performance clutch and carbon-fiber driveshaft, while the automatic includes aluminum paddle shifters and available launch control.
Two trim levels are on offer, including the Sport and the Performance. Opt for the latter, and the 2023 Nissan Z includes upgraded brakes in the form of four-piston calipers and 14-inch rotors up front, as well as two-piston calipers and 13.8-inch rotors in back. The Performance also throws on sharper suspension bits and a limited-slip differential. Finally, there’s the special edition Proto Spec, which is limited at 240 units.
Pricing for the all-new 2023 Nissan Z starts at around $40,000.

Interior looks fine. exterior boring. I don't see it selling that well unless its priced below 40k
I think the 400Z looks amazing, I love how it looks old school. The performance numbers look pretty good too. But from what I gather its going to be priced at $40k USD which is more expensive than a Camaro SS. And if it was my money, I would much rather have an SS which has better performance numbers and still spend less. I think the 400Z should've been priced closer to $30-$35k USD.
"As Chevy Camaro Rival". Sorry, no, why is it every other car makers cars are aimed at GM vehicles (on GMA)? When has the Nissan-Z ever been classified as a "pony car", no where near the same size.
Looks terrible.
The only reason it's not a Camaro rival is there is no back seat, but the Camaro back seat is basically unusable so there is that.
Looks far better than the Camaro. Good work Nissan. If only Chevy had some good designers the Camaro wouldn't look like a clown car.
you must be blind and hate lines. the Z is so boring anyone could have drawn it. Nothing to look at. People who aren't gm fans i know think the camaro is best looking of all the pony cars. ITs also the most expensive. Only mistake they made is the back seat. If GM made it usable it would sell better.
It's not the most expensive, the mustang price shot up with the 18 refresh. Challenger depends, the SRT however costs more than the SS.
Hardware wise the Camaro wins, it's great. But the looks are a mix of generic and overstyled. The gun slit chop top is a look very few adults care for. Small children tend to like it though. I can't take it seriously when it looks like a cartoon.
Sales prove my opinion is NOT in the minority.
yea.... Mustangs cost more than Camaros. The 4banger starts at $24k usd and the SS starts at $35k usd. Most people cant get over the low roof and lesser visibility of the Camaros. But as a 6th gen Camaro owner, you get over all that quickly. I daily a Camaro, and I sometimes forget that I'm driving anything different than other cars on the road.......... that is until I hit the gas pedal
The Vette doesn't have a back seat at all , and costs far more than a Camaro. Nobody cares about that, so why knock the Camaro, at least the rear seats can be used to stow packages.
looks are subjective. Personally I think the 6th gen Camaros, especially 2019 and up look beautiful, and is the best looking Camaro ever made. The thing about the 6th gen Camaros is that they're much lower to the ground and smaller than you would think from looking at pictures. When you stand next to the 6th gen Camaros, they really look beautiful.
I like the 400Z too, because it looks old school.
As someone that owns a 6th gen Camaro, I can confirm that the back seats are COMPLETELY unusable. The only way that you can use the back seats are for storage, because no human will fit. I dont mind, because I have no need for back seats, but thats the truth.
You are the clown Mr.Mike. Why do you guys always make these silly subjective statements about cars. Another really useless statement offering nothing to readers.
The only reason it’s not a camaro rival is because they camaro will be gone when this comes out
As much as I'm biased towards Camaros, I have to agree to this statement. I don't have a problem with the competition. Granted it would be more beneficial if GM wasn't a bunch of pushovers. Competition inherently brought better tech and more to the table when you are trying to one-up the competition. Not GM, oh no, instead of doing just that. They run and hide, instead of making the Camaro more desirable. They chose to discontinue, or if rumors are true, turn it into an EV sedan. That's exactly what they are doing with the Malibu its what they did to the Cruze and the Impala. Instead of making those cars more desirable. They chose to get rid of them.
Looks are in the eye of the beholder, but having said that, this car should sell. Price is supposed to start below 40k and has good power and should have decent handling. Good job.
My opinion I know, but this car is not exciting. The exterior shape, having that traditional Z flow is nice, but the lines are boring. It looks like an unfinished 3D model. The rear gives off retro vibes which is kind of cool, but it doesn't blow me away either. I'm not seeing anything too exiting about the interior either. Decent enough, but forgettable.
I don't see any reason to buy this car over a Camaro or a GT. It had better start in the mid 30s at the most...otherwise it's laughable when you can get a GT or an LT1 for less.
agreed, I think the 400Z is worth $30-$35k USD.
I like how the 400Z looks old school, but for that $35k-$40k USD range, a Camaro SS would offer so much more for the money.
Look at that sea of plastic! So why buy this? More power and comfort in a 1Lt comaro. It’s like comparing a Porsche to a vette! It’s always like this with import sports cars. It will sell as brand loyalty seems to do more than results these days.
there was a time I would have preferred the Porsche over the Vette, I've owned a C3, C7,but now own a C8 and would not trade it for a Porsche unless I just wanted to flip the Porsche to make money to buy a C8 Z06. The C8 is every bit the car the Porsche is for far less and with a more comfortable ride (when you want it) and nicer interior. Sure the GT3 will outperform a C8n Z51 out of the box. But the new Z that's another story.
Better competitor to the Camaro then the Supra, I can tell you that much
Front grille shape and size does not fit the rest! For all the other design elements ... It's EPIC!
Chevy will respond by killing Camaro. Will be replaced by a Traverse EUV or some other offering that requires less competition because Mary refuses to compete with dead Regal, Lacrosse and contracting Equinox sales serving as proof.
Chevrolet does a great job covering the segment with Corvette but has always been dominant enough to offer multiple offerings. Had MG not been given rights I think a reworked Avista should serve a the basis of next gen Camaro.
