The GMC Terrain crossover was scheduled to receive a mid-cycle enhancement (MCE) for the 2021 model year. However, as with many other GM models, this was pushed back a year due to complications arising from the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2022 GMC Terrain will go on sale later this year. As our photos show, with the 2022 model on the left in each case, there are many differences between this vehicle and the pre-facelift vehicle, mostly at the front end.
The front fascia has been squared up considerably, giving a more aggressive appearance. Notably, the lighting cluster on each side now makes up part of a rectangle, contrasting considerably with the former downward swoop. The grille has also been revised, with a new, almost full-width indent at the bottom.
From a front three-quarter view, it’s clear that the side air intakes have been radically reshaped. There is no sign of the former styling feature which partially echoed recent developments in Cadillac design.
There are no major changes to the sides of the vehicle. The squared-off wheel arches are still evident, and so too is the uplift of the window line across the rear pillars.
The rear fascia is almost entirely unchanged, although the reversing lights are now wider than before. The exhaust design has not yet been confirmed, but we expect the 2022 GMC Terrain to have the same single, tucked-under exhaust as shown in the 2020 model on the right.
Previously, GMC Terrain models with the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gasoline engine, which made 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, had clearly visible twin exhaust outlets. However, this engine was discontinued for the 2021 Terrain and will not return for the 2022 model year. The only available engine will be the less powerful turbocharged 1.5L I4 LYX, rated at 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. This will be paired with GM’s nine-speed automatic transmission.
Further changes include small revisions to the interior, an engine auto stop-start defeat switch, a new head-up display feature and the addition of an AT4 trim level. As shown above, the more off-road oriented AT4 has a slightly different front-end design than other models in the range, giving it superior underbody protection and a better approach angle.

the new one looks SO MUCH better. I like the squared off look a lot. Good stuff.
Single exhaust, smaller engine very bad move, Needs more interior chooses
Exterior looks fine
I own the 2018 Slt 1.5 turbo and this is a peppy vehicle and I'm a spirited driver and the engine is more than enough. Maybe you should be looking at the gmc arcadia for the engine upgrades.
If Honda , Toyota, Hyundai, Kia , Vw can only offer an economical and sporty engine, then the Terrain can simplify it's choices and have the one engine offering too.
Disregard my comments on the Hummer EV/Sierra post. This is what I'm talking about. Great comparison photos to really illustrate the differences between models. The first article on this subject I really didn't notice anything significant. But now, heck yeah massive change up front. Way better looking, more rugged. Thank you.
I like the changes to the exterior. Gives us a more aggressive look. Now give us back the aggressive powered engine to match or at least offer it on the high end level vehicles. And find a way to return to some type of gear stick. You are losing customers with the gear button design. Put those in the Buick Envision where they fit with the typical buyers.
Yes really like the new refresh Terrain for 2022 specially the Denali look but very disappointing with engine choice wish they would offer the 2.0 litre engine in the Denali trim makes my decision to purchase gmc a lot easier
Dont have issues with the 1.5 engine I just think the 2.0 engine should be a option in the Denali trim the Acadia is a bit big for my purposes and I would like to stick with the terrain I like the refresh and would like a bit More horsepower with out going to imports!!!
