Corvette enthusiasts may be familiar with the 1960 Corvette Fuelia, which sported a 24-gallon fuel tank for racing. With only 10 ever built, seeing one in person would be a rare treat. Luckily, we know that one will visit the Amelia Island 2015 Concours d’Elegance, which runs March 13-15, 2015.
The story behind this particular Vette is rather interesting, and goes something like this: Illinois-based George Reed owned a distribution center handling exotic vehicles and raced some of the best, and decided to try a Corvette. So he ordered one from Nickey Chevrolet with the sole intention of racing it. Nickey prepped the engine, and then the Corvette was sent to Florida, where Zora Arkus-Duntov himself assisted with the final prep. Reed ended up racing one of his other cars, thereby allowing Chuck Hall and Bill Fritts to pilot the “Race Rat” Corvette to class victory in the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring in Florida.
Nicknamed Race Rat, the winning Corvette will make a return visit to Florida as well as to the Amelia Island Concours, where you will be able to see it in all its glory and then tell your friends that not only did you just see a rare Vette, but that the same vehicle won the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring.
