Hertz Offloading Low-Mileage Chevy Silverado EV WT Units

American rental car company Hertz is selling dozens of low-mileage Chevy Silverado EV WT pickups in an effort to further reduce its all-electric fleet and align with customer demand. The used Silverado EV pickups are available through Hertz Car Sales, and are priced around $63,000 to $64,000. Mileage varies between 4,000 miles and 16,000 miles. Hertz announced it was set to acquire a fleet of all-electric Silverados just last year.

As reported by InsideEVs, a Hertz representative states that the rental company is selling off the used Chevy Silverado EV WT pickups as part of a broader move to realign the composition of its all-electric rental fleet with customer demand. The company will retain some of its Silverado EV units. About 35 units of the Silverado EV are listed for sale. As GM Authority covered in March, pricing for the Chevy Silverado EV 3WT starts at $74,900, making these lightly used models from Hertz something of a bargain.

Back in January, Hertz announced that it was reducing its EV fleet due to a combination of high repair costs and lower-than-expected demand, with the funds gained through the sales reinvested into its gasoline-powered vehicle fleet. According to reports, Hertz planned to sell off 20,000 EV units total. Previously, all-electric models made up 11 percent of the company’s total vehicle fleet, 80 percent of which were Teslas.

Part of Hertz’s decision to sell off a large portion of its EV fleet came down to depreciation, prompted by Tesla’s move to slash prices last year.

Back in April, GM Authority reported that Hertz was selling an array of low-mileage 2023 Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUVs, with several examples listed in the low-$20,000 range. These low-mile, relatively inexpensive all-electric Bolts could provide an appealing alternative for customers that would otherwise buy from a dealership.

The recent sell-offs stand in stark contrast to an announcement made in 2022 that Hertz was poised to order 175,000 electric vehicles from GM over the course of five years. Meanwhile, the broader auto industry is also shifting its electrification strategy in the wake of lower-than-expected consumer demand.

  • They didn’t even say (and I really don’t care) how much the original price was so we can see how great a deal it is. Or maybe I just missed it after reading it twice.

      • Beachy: I agree with a lot of what you say, but not when it comes to your pure hatred for anything EV.

Go rent one for a week or two. Drive one. Get to know what they are really about and like. After that, if you still feel the same way, fine. In 10 years you can go out and buy 2 or 3 brand new ICE vehicles and drive them till we're all dead.

        • CimSev,

Bill Ford said he never thought he'd see a day where his family business was political but he said that day had unfortunately come. Elon Musk was doing very well selling Teslas to everyone regardless of their political leanings and EV deliveries were on the rise everywhere by all automakers.

Then the current administration came to power in Washington and starting telling folks they would be switching to EVs, certain automakers followed this lead and decreed that they'd be ceasing production of ICE vehicles and they wanted "everybody in" on EVs. The push was calculated, coordinated and very strong. They tried to create a herd mentality and make it seem as if an EV was an inevitable part of everybody's future. Stories were told about EVs being "sold out" with lines of 170,000 people so one better not wait; get in the line now - they're going fast. A national reservation system for EVs was created by an automaker where for over 120 years it had never existed before. Don't wait, sign up today was the message.

A large swath of the American people are actually too smart for a con job like that and are still "rugged individualists" at heart. They want to determine their destiny and so they pushed back and many are pushing back hard. They're actually mad about it and as they see it, there is no way they are going to do what some Washington politicians tell them to do. They'll sooner walk than to drive an EV. It's why many now hate GM's CEO. It isn't that she's a woman. It's that she went so hard for EVs and joined forces with Washington seemingly against the will of her own customers. Of course that sentiment can be debated but for so many that's how they feel.

I don't know what all this does to the future of EVs and I have no doubt they are good vehicles that will work well for some. The problem is our government should have never effectively mandated them. They should have never tried to push people into them. They should have let the market evolve as it was naturally doing and let those forces dictate adoption rates. Bill Ford is right - they made EVs political so now there is a large subset of the population that is probably turned off to them forever.

          • Wow Rocket. That's a lot of spin to digest.

Bottom line is that (nothing you just said) changes my point to Beachy. Go drive one for a couple weeks. Don't buy one, rent one. You can spin the dialogue any way you wish. But let's ask those who have been the victims of climate change. Ask those in Florida, Georgia and the other states that have just been demolished by the worst hurricane in history for them. Ask those living in states where the heat is getting so bad that it's unbearable. Ask those who are being displaces by floods, wildfires, smog, etc. Let's see how much longer we can continue doing what we've been doing just because it's comfortable.

I don't care who's in Washington. We need all of them, red and blue, to work on these issues that are already affecting us ALL and that will only get worse. So spin if you will. EV's are fantastic driving vehicles that are far better than what those anti-EV people try to say. And no, sales of EV's are not down. Some models yes. But you can's argue with facts and the fact is that EV sales are up and look to continue going up.

          • Well said, I have no use for an EV but they make perfect sense for some including my wife who drives 50 miles round trip to and from work. But she won’t even entertain it because of the current administration TRYING to jam them down our throats! I would buy her a Lyriq tomorrow if she wanted one. Big blocks and Duramaxes forever!

    • I see quite a few on the daily actually. If you don’t want to worry about charging till the end of your rental that’s your best option.

  • Cimsev is an idiot who hides under his bed if there is a cloud in the sky. This climate crap needs to stop now. If your not liking the weather where you live MOVE! At least that is one thing the Democrats have yet to ban from our freedoms. Climate change, bah humbug. Grow a set of kahunis and deal with it, don't blame others.

    • Move where and how? We can't all be remote workers, so much empty land is kept unused so you'll be desperate to get price-gouged for the limited rentals, a lot of people don't have the money to move and we can't all just get a bank loan or ask our parents to buy us a house, and "Just start a business!" also isn't a solution because we can't all ask our parents for startup money and subsidies for the first 5-10 years until it's profitable.
