The United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union is set to expand its ongoing strike against automakers this Friday if progress is not made in establishing a new contract. The UAW announced an initial round of strikes immediately following the expiration of the previous labor contracts earlier this month. The union expanded those strikes against GM and Stellantis a week later due to unsatisfactory progress in contract negotiations.
According to a report from Reuters, which cites an unnamed insider source, UAW President Shawn Fain will announce new strike targets at 10 a.m. on Friday via a livestream online broadcast. Workers are expected to walk out at targeted facilities around 12 p.m.
The UAW launched its initial round of strikes following the expiration of previous contracts at 11:59 p.m., September 14th. The UAW targeted all three of the Big Detroit Automakers (GM, Ford, Stellantis), a first for the union. Initial targets included the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, Ford’s Wayne Assembly Plant in Michigan, and the Stellantis Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio.
The UAW later expanded its strike targets to 38 parts distribution sites across 20 states, including both GM and Stellantis facilities. The UAW opted not to expand its strike against Ford, stating that more-substantial progress had been made in contract negotiations with Ford.
The UAW’s targeted strike strategy is said to provide union negotiators with greater flexibility compared to striking at all automaker facilities all at once. The targeted strategy will also put less strain on the UAW’s strike funds. Striking UAW members are given $500 per week in strike pay. Internal communications indicate the UAW is prepared to strike for months, if needed. The UAW represents roughly 146,000 autoworkers across all three makes, including 46,000 GM workers, 57,000 Ford workers, and 43,000 Stellantis workers.
The UAW has called for record contracts on the back of record profits realized by automakers. The union previously demanded a 40-percent pay increase over a four-year contract, but has reportedly lowered its demands to 36 percent.

The demands they are asking for are just too much, they say they have lowered it to 36% more but no one says anything about the 32hr work week with 40hr pay, well that's 20% percent rite there. So, they actually want a 56% raise. Again, understand this is not about the workers, it's about sowing chaos as the uaw comm director has already said. Bring in scabs, let the strike pay run out. If we are all going to feel the pain of this strike, then make it worth it. Come Christmas the employees will start to have little patience for the commy Uaw.
It’s called negotiations for a reason. If you want a dollar you don’t ask for a dollar because when the company says no (which is the most common response when negotiating) then where can you go from there! If you want a dollar your going to have to ask for $2.00! And after going back and forth for God knows how long…..
Eventually both sides come to terms.
I understand that completely but the uaw has already said the entire goal is to cause chaos and have this go on as long as possible, 2-3 months. They are lying when they say they want to sit down and talk. They have done admitted as much. The harder they push the easier it's going to be for the big three to take their game somewhere else or let ai intelligent robots do all the work.
I really try to keep my comments civil on here, but I can't take it anymore...
I support the HONEST, hard working, blue collar workers down in the trenches. (The lazy ones, the "boat anchors" etc. need to go) If the workers are getting taken advantage of, then that MUST be corrected. I do NOT however, support the UAW. If only HALF of what I've heard, read and seen over the past few weeks is true, the UAW is one of the slimiest, most dishonest and corrupt organizations on this planet. You can be sure, whatever deal they get for the workers, the UAW will get a LOT more. (And since the workers would get more, the UAW will most likely raise union dues too)
And Biden??? Don't get me started! "First president to walk a picket line. Stands alongside UAW leadership while they make speeches." How long was he there??? Not even 30 minutes! Thats not support. Thats a photo op!
After I returned from a major automotive manufacturer in Japan, I took my engineering team and worked on the assembly line in the original Hamtramk plant for 2 weeks. I found the union workers to be dedicated and hard working, but the union leaders were focused on causing unrest and inciting the workers who gradually became unhappy. I have watched this phenomena for the last decade and am convinced the union leaders need to be fired and replaced.
Biden is a 2 face Pony soldier. He goes to the rally " only to look for votes" ,then on the other had he is pushing EV's . Which in itself will create a lot of layoffs and lost jobs
The union only looks out for themselves why do you think the always back democrats hope they stay out till their out of money and disappear look at yellow freight
I'm thinking, that strike fund won't last forever.
Darn Brave Browser ruins my extensive comments. Compared to what Mary Barra makes - whose statements could be generated by any Chat Bot, the Union Employees are performing high value services. They need more than McDonald's grade high school wages.
After reading all the comments, I would like to way in; (again). I was a union worker for 17 years. It was a great Company! I was on strike twice. The union thought that the floor sweepers should make the same as a master Tool and Die Maker. We did have full retirement after 30 years. The Union Board were voted in on popularity not brains. They turn down a 4% match on our retirement for an Extended Vacation os 6 weeks every 5 years. I started my own company. I soon realized that everyone had to WORK and work efficiently to make a profit. The average person dose not realize what it takes to keep a company afloat. Each employee has to produce 4 to 6 times their wages just to stay afloat. We had our ups and downs but as we built the company and created a culture of work ethics's our company grew. We shared, with vacations, the best health coverage, 401k matched 5% + profit sharing. We had quite a few now a million $ in retirement. Employer’s want there employee’s to be healthy, happy and successful.
To do that they have to make something to sell at a (yes that dirty word “a profit”
