The United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union is set to expand its ongoing strike against automakers this Friday if progress is not made in establishing a new contract. The UAW announced an initial round of strikes immediately following the expiration of the previous labor contracts earlier this month. The union expanded those strikes against GM and Stellantis a week later due to unsatisfactory progress in contract negotiations.
According to a report from Reuters, which cites an unnamed insider source, UAW President Shawn Fain will announce new strike targets at 10 a.m. on Friday via a livestream online broadcast. Workers are expected to walk out at targeted facilities around 12 p.m.
The UAW launched its initial round of strikes following the expiration of previous contracts at 11:59 p.m., September 14th. The UAW targeted all three of the Big Detroit Automakers (GM, Ford, Stellantis), a first for the union. Initial targets included the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, Ford’s Wayne Assembly Plant in Michigan, and the Stellantis Toledo Assembly Complex in Ohio.
The UAW later expanded its strike targets to 38 parts distribution sites across 20 states, including both GM and Stellantis facilities. The UAW opted not to expand its strike against Ford, stating that more-substantial progress had been made in contract negotiations with Ford.
The UAW’s targeted strike strategy is said to provide union negotiators with greater flexibility compared to striking at all automaker facilities all at once. The targeted strategy will also put less strain on the UAW’s strike funds. Striking UAW members are given $500 per week in strike pay. Internal communications indicate the UAW is prepared to strike for months, if needed. The UAW represents roughly 146,000 autoworkers across all three makes, including 46,000 GM workers, 57,000 Ford workers, and 43,000 Stellantis workers.
The UAW has called for record contracts on the back of record profits realized by automakers. The union previously demanded a 40-percent pay increase over a four-year contract, but has reportedly lowered its demands to 36 percent.

Digging that whole deeper and deeper aren’t you UAW? Trying to help the working class you’ve only harmed it.
That's the union way.
Just close all plants if you want to have an impact. Keeping plants open does no good for those closed.

We should be hearing big announcements soon about new investments and manufacturing plant construction in Mexico or Canada coming from the big 3.
GM and Ford and Ram could future proof themselves by having manufacturing facilities in all 3 countries so when the strike happens, they can add a shift the one of the other plants and keep on going.
Hopefully it's your job next you corporate @$$ likker!
CMON MAN...You mean Dementia Sloppy Joe's appearance with the strike line, (to buy votes from the mindless UAW workers ) whose intention is to decimate the UAW jobs when his push is to eliminate gasoline powered vehicles... and build all electric cars that need much less labor to mfg. didnt have any effect on GM?
Is the UAW that stupid? It is so amazing to see Joe stand up there slapping backs and hi"-5'ing everyone for a Photo opt while "The Biden Agenda" is to go all electric and cut half of their jobs. What was the quote from Forest Gump? Yes, the executives of the Big 3 are over-paid but somehow their management has increased the stock prices, intern made everyone’s 401K better. UAW workers are not overworked and underpaid compared to most everyone else;
It's demented.
I agree. I stand with the union in trying to preserve jobs, but they are completely clueless when trash like Biden, Rashida Tlaib, Debbie Dingel and other Democratic skum "support" the picketers while backstabbing them by supporting job killing EV mandates. Nothing like being hypocritical.
Beats the hell out of scum republicans that shut the government down and hurt people.
The Democrats are shutting it down, they are ones voting No.
For good reason.
You must be getting that on Faux News. Even Mitch McConnell is saying that the House is wrong to be shutting down the Government!
Mitch is a waste of time, his mind is going the way Biden's mind is going.
That means nothing coming from the Orange Cult.
Well he’s your republican leader since the Senate is considered the elite wing of Congress!
Biden just allowed 450,000 Venezuelan men to get work permits to take over the jobs of the striking UAW workers. How's that going? LOL!! Dumb and dumber! Hahaha!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Again, Cap, we need them to do the jobs Americans won’t do. Ask George W. Bush. He’s the one that said it.
500 dollars a week for not working why not stay home for as long as you can just like the losers collecting money from the government. The cars they build are more than we can afford so screw it close who cares . I bought a new truck 18 months ago and keep getting car fax that’s it’s worth 20 thousand less that’s pure bullsh!t
Seems SFain went to the Joseph Stalin school of negotiating. I am worried that we are repeating the March 1996 Dayton brake parts strike. UAW went from 2M to 250k at warp speed.
Firestone did it near here too. After a long strike, told the workers it was the final offer and the plant would have to close if not settled. Strikers got to see their hometown plant close and then be bulldozed. Sad for the community, no winners. I see that slab everyday along with the old Chrysler foundry slab, the International Harvester engine plant slab, and many others around. It’s really sad.
This keeps up my next vehicle will be a Toyota. Not because I want a Toyota, but because if I need a vehicle or a part, I want to be able to acquire said vehicle or part. Not be told, sorry, UAW is on strike.
Sorry, you are not going to have better luck with them.
Come on, man. We’ll wait until Friday to see how many more facilities the UAW will strike. If I’m Mary Barra and Mark Reuss, I’d shut them all down now and let the strike fund run out asap. Greedy UAW Bastids don’t know how good they have it.
What’s wrong with everyone here? What are their alternatives? Keep eating $hit for as long as the companies will feed it to them? I don’t know where anyone else works that are making negative comments but if your bosses are making an exorbitant amount of money, and the company is making record profits but they offer you peanuts and crumbs for a raise and tell you that you should be happy with that what would you do? Just keep your mouth shut and take it. Why so much criticism for workers trying to improve their standard of living? Is it jealousy because they have representation at the workplace and many of you don’t? Unless you’ve performed the same tasks and worked on the same assembly line that they do how can you comment that their jobs aren’t difficult and that they don’t work that hard. We should be supportive of workers taking a stand to improve their workplace not critical!
Their alternative? Taking the 20% raise GM offered base minimum for all employees, that was their alternative. If you knew anything about higher ups, it's that they'd rather see the company go bankrupt than lose some of their wage, they can live off the money they've already earned, or go to another company, one without a union.
And someone from Florida is going to tell us about "higher-ups"? I think you're high enough already. Go picket Tallahassee and your 4% governor.
I’m not sure what “higher ups” you are referring to FL Man but if you are referring to the “higher up” within the Union structure I am extremely familiar with how it works. Maybe YOU think that they should take the 20% offer but maybe they don’t feel that it’s adequate. I’m sure that there are many issues on the table including the two tiered system that keeps the lowest tier quite a bit lower. When they come to terms, and they will eventually come to terms, the membership will have the opportunity for a ratification vote. They either accept it or not. And if they don’t like how the Union represented them or if they feel that the Union led them down the wrong path, they get the opportunity to vote them out. Union elections are regulated by the US Dept of Labor. It is of no advantage to the Union for the companies to go out of business or go BK.
You think making $80,000 + $30,000 worth of medical/dental/eye benefits + profit shares and more per year for driving a forklift isn't enough pay? And they should be given a 36% raise for only four days of work? From a company that is NOT making record profits because they have to invest more than what they are making into EVs, and the shareholders aren't even getting paid. You're nuts. Tons of people would die for a job like that in its current state, much more with the 20% GM has already offered along with 5 weeks of vacation and 18 paid vacation days and much more.
You can see videos of the jobs these workers do. Tons of people work actual hard physical labor jobs for twelve hours a day for much less money and much less benefits.
And ending tiers is incredibly insulting to employees who have worked the job for years. It is entirely normal in jobs and is common sense.
