GM Fort Wayne Plant To Halt Production During Week Of August 28th

Production at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana will be temporarily halted next week due to an unspecified parts shortage.

According to a report from The Detroit News, production of Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks at the Fort Wayne facility will be down for a little more than a week. General Motors has not expressed exactly what the parts shortage involves.

“Fort Wayne Assembly production is canceled for the week of August 28th due to a temporary part shortage,” a GM spokesperson stated in a prepared statement. “We anticipate resuming production beginning Tuesday, September 5th, following the Labor Day holiday.”

For reference, the GM Oshawa plant in Canada is currently experiencing a shortage of axles for GM light-duty pickups. Notably, The General did acknowledge that the parts constraints at the GM Fort Wayne and GM Silao plants are not related to the one at the Canadian plant.

Speaking of the parts shortage at the GM Silao plant, GM Authority previously reported that the facility had production halted from August 11th, 2023 to August 27th, 2023, marking a little over two weeks of idle time. Similarly to the Fort Wayne plant, General Motors did not specify exactly what the parts shortage was.

“Silao Assembly production is currently down due to a temporary part shortage,” a GM spokesperson told GM Authority. “We anticipate regular production to resume at the plant on Monday, August 28th. GM is actively working to resolve this challenge with our supplier in order to meet high customer demand for our vehicles.”

It’s worth noting that the Silao facility experienced another two-week production stoppage in March 2023, once again due to a parts shortage, while production at the Fort Wayne facility was stopped for two weeks in March and April 2023.

As background, the three assembly plants mentioned above are all responsible for production of General Motors’ lineup of light-duty pickup trucks, namely the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. With production shortages at all three plants, it’s likely that there could be a diminished supply of GM’s most popular vehicle.

  • Why build them? They don’t know how to get anything shipped in a reasonable amount time. Giving customers an ETA of August to December 2023, on currently built units is pathetic.

  • How much longer is GM going to use covid as a excuse for their extremely horrible mismanagement. What a shame!!!

  • We all know what GM is doing. Stop making the trucks so there will be a demand for them, then jack the price up.

  • My High Country has been in the Ft. Wayne parking lot since June 8 th. Completed and ready to ship. I know I am not alone. Very frustrating.

  • I'm curious as to why they will not disclose the 'part' causing the shortage. I would ask if it is a supply chain issue from a railroad related problem. Railroads continue to contribute to the shortage of parts and delivery of autos across the nation.

  • Boone, these individuals you are referring to are building world class trucks and deserve respect just like any other employee. Pull you head out of your a.. and have respect!

  • Never fails. My build week of Aug 7 got pushed to Aug28. And now they are shutting down. Been trying to order a truck since last Dec. and now finally get locked in the build and this crap.

    • Come to Fort Wayne! At least two huge parking lots, and the plants shipping field loaded with trucks.
