As a first glimpse of the revamped GM China Advanced Design Center’s capabilities, General Motors has just revealed the all-new Buick Proxima Design Concept for the first time in China.
GM China’s design arm first revealed the all-new Buick Proxima Design Concept with the country’s media in the city of Shanghai, during a special event called Ben Se (Creative Essence), where the automaker treated attendees to an immersive experience with cutting-edge EV designs developed for internal research. Among those developments is the Proxima project as a new design concept from Buick.
“We experiment with design as a solution for technology evolution and celebrate technology as a key driver behind innovative design,” said Design Vice President of GM China and GM International, Stuart Norris, in a statement. “The rapid technology development in China is empowering designers to reimagine vehicles and reshape their own career paths,” he added.
The all-new Buick Proxima Design Concept is the first project developed by the recently recruited young talent at the expanded and renovated GM China Advanced Design Center that opened in July 2021. The company claims that the Proxima completely reinvents the philosophy and the proportions of Buick’s flagship sedan, enhancing interior spaciousness and elevating cabin ride comfort by adopting a next-generation electric powertrain.
The Buick Proxima Design Concept presents the first interpretation of an all-electric full-size sedan from the Tri-Shield brand – which until now has only featured zero-emission crossovers and the coupe-bodied Buick Wildcat EV Concept. Although GM only revealed a couple of images from the front, we see that the Proxima Concept includes a new styling language, including signature lighting and striking gullwing doors.
Proxima means “next” in Portuguese and Spanish, embodying the GM China Advanced Design Center’s commitment to designing innovative solutions for the next generation of customers in China. In fact, the Buick Proxima Design Concept is modeled on a new electric vehicle architecture that GM could debut in the next five to ten years. The company revealed that this is just the beginning of what the Chinese design studio is preparing.

So a new Design direction already for Buick?
Haha. That's GM. Can't stick with anything no matter if a design, names, models, etc.
But at least it looks like a sedan!
This is at least 5, and probably more like 10, years out. With a new electric platform.
Good to see GM planning ahead for Buick’s bright future!
Oy, a cross between a Tesla (borrowing the failed idea of gullwing doors from the Model X) and a Lucid. But then, Buick's adopted country has been known for cheap knock-offs. This is a far cry from Buick's heyday.
I actually like this concept for Buick, but there is no way they will produce it as is once the bean counters get involved, but you're right it is a Teslas-Lucid mash up with a little VW bumper accents
In China?????
Not the USA!!!
Pitiful!
I guess Lucid can't sue them in China?
Ehh Just Another Crab made by Chino
What an awful looking vehicle! A beaver and a Tesla had a baby!
Am I the only one that thinks it looks like an EV1?
That's what I thought as soon as a I saw it. WTF happened to Buick?!
Mmmmm, it’s interesting that the concepts are sedans but all they produce are boring crossovers. A sedan? What a novel idea! LOL.
Love that Carl, I here that all the time, plus more and more SUV owners are complaining about the overweight issues/gas mph. When I see 80 + year old's parking ore making turns at intersections makes me hold my breath they don't hit anyone.
That’s a sedan??
Coupe maybe?
Ford Probe with a Buick symbol -my thoughts
Unfortunately, nothing seems to please people here, though they probably never intended to consider a Buick anyway. The design may take inspiration from Lucid or Tesla or whatever. But it gladdens me to know that GM is thinking of Buick and the future of Buick. Proxima!
Uhh.....When you have your American Buick Dealers starving for product with the cancellation of sedans including the Regal, Regal GS, and the Lacrosse, WITH NO ADVERTISING AT ALL...Sure GM is betting on Buick in China. I've owned many Buicks and I would purchase another if they had the Product in the US.
"WITH NO ADVERTISING AT ALL"
That can't be right. My wife watches cooking shows and they play that ad with the woman in four different outfits sitting in the ... ok I don't know what it is because it's a Buick something, but anyway they play that ad a lot.
Yes there is advertising for SUVs.....Made in China.
Yes all the Buick ads say “That is so you” is that they love knowing their Buick’s are engineered, designed & built in China? GM just screwing with North American assembly workers.
You're right about Buick starving for product, Tony. However, 99.9% of the dealers are dualed with GMC or Chevy & Cadillac. As long as trucks are selling, who cares about a few Buick SUV's taking up space on the back of the lot just to fulfill franchise requirements? Follow the money to the truck sales. That's what the dealers are doing.
I know Rick. I'm looking for Riviera/Regal style, not a truck. I know the profit is in the trucks... It keeps GM afloat. It just gets me angry that all I see on the road are German, Japanese, and Korean car makes. GM/Buick has abandoned a large part of its customer base. Thanks
My first thought was Lucid when I saw the front end. Looks good.
