Built Chevy Camaro ZL1 Hits 954 Horsepower On The Dyno: Video

Sitting at the top of the Chevy Camaro lineup, the Camaro ZL1 brings some serious firepower to bear, throwing down with a factory-rated 650 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 650 pound-feet of torque at 3,600 rpm thanks to the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4 engine. But what happens when the LT4 gets poked and prodded for even more output? As you might expect, the answer is loud and aggressive, as demonstrated in the following dyno run video.

The video clocks in at just under 10 minutes, and comes to us from the folks at Hoonigan, who paid a visit to K&N headquarters for the latest edition of the “Dyno Everything” series. True to form, the Hoonigan crew provides a quick overview of the Chevy Camaro set to be strapped down, while providing a few guesses as to what it’ll do at full chat.

As mentioned previously, the Chevy Camaro ZL1 is equipped with the supercharged 6.2L V8 LT4, the same engine used by heavy hitters like the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and Cadillac Escalade-V. While certainly potent in stock form, the LT4 in this particular Chevy Camaro ZL1 is upgraded with a 416 bottom end, which means displacement is now around 6.8 liters. The motor is also running E50 ethanol fuel, with boost upped to 13 psi.

The car was built specifically for drag racing, and to that end it’s running a set of 28 by 10.5 Hoosier Pro Bracket radials in the rear. Not much else was done to it though, with the interior and suspension both stock.

Still, this is a dyno test, which means meaty rubber and a beefy motor will likely be enough to turn out some impressive numbers. As is tradition, the Hoonigan crew takes a few swings at possible horsepower figures, but interestingly, each guess is very conservative, ranging between 560 and 700 ponies at the wheels. The owner, however, is a little more on the money, saying he’s shooting for four figures.

  • Yeah right, but then they'd do something like making the traction control impossible to disable. They can't seem to get out of their own way.

  • Wish they would have focused more on this car. Better design on blind spots and maybe less hard plastic interior. But still a beast of a car that I enjoy all I can.
