2021 Buick Envision More Efficient Than Outgoing 2020 Model

The 2021 Buick Envision offers countless improvements over the first-generation model that it replaces, including a sophisticated new E2 platform, all-new exterior styling, a redesigned cabin and new technologies.

The 2021 Buick Envision also offers fuel efficiency improvements over the first-gen model, too. With a new standard turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY gasoline engine and front-wheel drive, the 2021 Envision has an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 24 mpg city, 31 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined. Meanwhile, models with all-wheel drive are rated at 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.

First-generation Buick Envision models, by comparison, came equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.5L I4 LCV gasoline engine and front-wheel drive. For 2020, this combination carried an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. Models with the 2.5L engine and AWD were rated at 21 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined.

The available turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG engine in the 2020 Buick Envision was rated at 20 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined. This engine was only offered with all-wheel drive in the crossover.

2021 Buick Envision Fuel Economy
Model Engine Drivetrain City MPG Highway MPG Combined MPG
2020 Envision 2.5L LCV I4 FWD 22 29 25
2020 Envision 2.5L LCV I4 AWD 21 27 24
2020 Envision Turbo 2.0L LTG I4 AWD 20 25 22
2021 Envision Turbo 2.0L LSY I4 FWD 24 31 26
2021 Envision Turbo 2.0L LSY I4 AWD 22 29 25

The new 2021 Buick Envision is much more efficient than the model it replaces, then, able to achieve more than 30 mpg on the highway when equipped with FWD. Impressively, the AWD version of the crossover is equally as efficient as the FWD version of the outgoing model. These fuel economy gains can be at least partially attributed to the new 2.0L LSY engine, along with the standard GM nine-speed automatic transmission.

The 2021 Buick Envision began arriving at U.S. dealerships late last year. Pricing for the crossover starts at $32,995 for the entry-level Preferred trim level including destination. Production takes place at the GM China (SAIC) Jinqiao plant in Shanghai, China.

  • I'm no fan of anything GM, because they're cheap and their history for the last 20 years is they make "ehh" junk. Mary Barra is the worst CEO that's ever been at GM and I say worse than Roger Smith. That said I've recently seen 2 reviews on YouTube on this vehicle and in white w/tan interior the Avenir model is extremely attractive. While in Avenir guise it doesn't have all the equipment is should for the money (typical GM) or some equipment isn't even offered, the vehicle is pretty nice. It has only one engine the 2.0T w/225bhp and is let down by lackluster acceleration but for most of the US peasants who might buy this Chinese CCP made vehicle... its about 98% competitive. A new high or low for GM. Why is it not made in America by Americans, because GM makes more $$ vs using expensive UAW labor.

    • If you aren’t a fan of anything GM, it begs the question as to why are you on this site at all. While I am not a fan of EVERYTHING GM produces, they do produce a variety of vehicles that appeal to quite a few people. As far as quality goes, I have a 2014 Buick Verano Premium (2L turbo) that has never been back to the dealer once for a repair, not even a warranty item. I cannot say that about any other vehicle I have owned, either foreign or domestic.

      • Glad you asked why I'm here, because I grew up in GM vehicles, my first car was a killer 70 LeMans Sport and I always loved the vehicles they made. My 1st new one was an 84 J-Car, Oldsmobile when I was in the Marines... biggest piece of trash I've ever had. Then I had company cars for years and drove the crap out of them and realized what appliances they were. In '13 I saw the new ATS and thought I'm going to give them another shot and while I really liked the car it was recalled like 8X and Cadillac Svc from the 3 dealers I took it to was abysmal compared to the Mercedes Svc I'd gotten used to. Since then they've castrated Cadillac into less than an Acura competitor, its no longer a true luxury marque. As an American I think we should be building vehicles the world envies yet GM continues to bring substandard, IMO trash, to the market. I say trash because its always 80% for 100% pricing then they incentivize to move the metal. Its never like the new Vette, holy crap that's insane and the value is extraordinary. The CT6 was such a waste and yet another GM attempt to enter a mkt, field a 1/2 @$$ed product, priced higher than it should have, never marketed it, then once it was just about right, they kill it. There is no commitment and no future thinking except EV. In 1977 GM had an enormous full sized product portfolio, the mid sized portfolio was huge, today they make the Malibu... yet others have filled the void it abandoned. Clearly there are reasons like UAW legacy costs that drove them to bankruptcy, but MB had a clean balance sheet 10 years ago. Has the mkt changed of course but others have stepped up and eaten GM's lunch. Hyundai nearly left the USA about 20 years ago and are pushing 1M units per year here now, HOW, they build products people want at a good value. To GM that doesn't even register... this idiot running the company wants to be the "inclusive leader" and wants to find her strength in diversity...

I'm here so that if GM actually tunes in they see there are a lot of people that will never buy a GM vehicle and why. Perhaps they might listen as I would love to buy American, but I won't support pathetic mgt, PC thinking or spend my money on crap. Problem is they don't care...

  • Not surprising the newer designed and less powerful 2.0T is rated for a little better MPG. The 9 speed doesn't always improve mileage and in some cases drops it so most of it is in the new chassis and engine. Note that Hyundai is getting 28 highway out of it's larger and far more powerful 2.5T in the new Sante Fe and Sorrento AWD which are larger and heavier than this so the 29 figure is hardly spectacular considering it's only a 2 liter making 228 HP.

    • Joe Yoman

But when take a $h!t, 2 gallons of water takes it 800 miles down the Mississippi River until it eventually ends up in the Gulf of Mexico. Making my $h!t much better than the $h!t Hyundai/Kia puts out. Smells better too.

  • Test drove a 2021 and liked it. Then I learned from the dealer that GM abandoned the ability to flat tow the Envision this year, the biggest reason why I was interested in it at all. Poor choice. (Previous year Envisions are towable.) With the increasing number of people buying expensive motorhomes during COVID, the “flat tow” market demand is booming but ignored. Every model year, the number of vehicles available to flat tow dwindles. Jeep is the “go to” vehicle because many have transfer cases that can be put in neutral for flat towing. But Jeeps are ugly and highly unreliable. Fortunately, this year’s Lincoln Nautilus is still flat towable, and it will likely be our next vehicle. Bye bye Buick.
