Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra Recalled For Loose Roof Rail Airbag Inflator Endcaps

General Motors and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued a recall for certain 2015 and 2016 model-year Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks over an issue with the roof rail airbag inflator endcaps.

The problem: the roof rail airbag (RRAB) inflator end cap in affected trucks may suddenly detach from the assembly. A roof rail airbag, also referred to as a side curtain airbag, is mounted in the roof liner and ejects downward in front of the side windows in the event of a crash.

The hazards: if the end cap separates from the airbag inflator, the compressed gas will escape and the end cap can be propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.

The fix: GM says it will notify owners of affected vehicles and dealers will replace the roof rail airbag modules on the left and/or right side. These repairs will be performed at no cost to the vehicle owner.

Affected vehicles:

  • 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500
  • 2015-2016 Chevrolet Silverado 3500
  • 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 1500
  • 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 2500
  • 2015-2016 GMC Sierra 3500

Number of affected vehicles: a total of 9,279 vehicles in the United States are affected by this problem.

Owners should: GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealer. If owners are unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall, they can visit my.gm.com/recalls and type in their VIN to see any open recalls or other actions that may be active on their vehicle. This recall campaign is expected to begin on January 10th, 2021.

    • Had a 73' C-10 Custom Deluxe.
It was a very dependable truck
350 engine and tranmission were bullet proof. It was a working truck. Sold It in 83' with over 100k on it. Gas mileage nothing like today's models but gas was cheaper then. Basic maintenance was all I did on 10 years.cost then only $3400. Out the door. would take one today just like it for that price.

  • Mike I, like Josh, only like the front end styling of the 2016, 2017, 2018 etc. of the Silverado. Who ever redesigned the new front ends AND the new Mickey mouse lookin Silverado tail lights, should be 'put out to pasture!

  • so, as I am reading a story on GM authority, I am seeing advertisements for the Hyundai Telluride?? If I wanted to see Hyundai, I would subscribe to Hyundai Authority......I guess everyone is a sell out these days.......

    • It’s called marketing. For all of the screaming and wailing about what junk GM is, the Hyundai ads might get some of these people to at least look at something else.

  • I'm still waiting on them to replace both of our trucks airbags.. got the letter about it over 7 years ago.. but kept getting told no parts.. this is crazy
