2021 GMC Yukon Shows Production Intent Grille

The all-new 2021 GMC Yukon Denali is on the way, and now we’re getting our first look at the production intent front end and grille thanks to a new set of spy photos.

To note, this particular model is the GMC Yukon XL, the lengthened version of the Yukon line, and it’s decked out in the Denali trim level, the range-topping option.

This prototype marks the first time we’ve seen the new Yukon Denali grille, as previous prototypes were equipped with placeholder units. The model seen here, however, is equipped with a production intent grille, as well as a few other updated elements we’ll cover in follow-up posts.

While the new GMC Yukon grille is obviously obscured, there are a few interesting elements worth pointing out. For starters, the grille insert looks to offer polished horizontal styling elements reminiscent of the current GMC Sierra Denali.

As evidenced by the large grille size, the new 2021 GMC Yukon will offer a front intake that dominates the SUV’s front end, stretching wide between the head lamps and dipping low into the front bumper.

2019 GMC Sierra Denali

GM is currently busy revamping its entire line of full-size SUV models, which includes the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, and GMC Yukon / Yukon XL. The overhaul is scheduled for completion by the 2021 model year, although some of the revamped models will be revealed as early as the end of the 2019 calendar year.

As such, prototypes are now making their way onto public roads, as revealed by this camouflaged 2021 GMC Yukon.

As an all-new model, the 2021 GMC Yukon will feature brand-new styling from tip to tail, lead by a new polished chrome nose. We think the big grille look plays well with the GMC line, and should complement a host of other updates for the model, including a lightened curb weight, all-new GM T1 vehicle platform underpinnings, updated infotainment gear, a potential new rear independent suspension option, and the inclusion of GM Super Cruise autonomous driving technology.

  • Curious to see what they bring to the table, Lincoln went all in and delivered exterior design, interior design+materials, powertrains and price .

  • Interior people who did the redesigned pickups should not be involved with the SUV's. Otherwise GM is going to be losing sales market share to Ford and left making excuses that this was their intention. ??
Get it right for God's sake.

    • I don’t think they are because the Escalade was using the GMC interior until they got there interior done

    • For the last couple of generations of GM full-size SUVs, they’ve generally had nicer interiors than the pick-ups. I think GM dropped the ball on the new truck interiors because they thought most people who buy the full-size trucks still use them for actual utility purposes and not as oversized luxury barges with a bed that rarely has anything in it.

    • I think the new Lincoln Aviator shows where Ford is going, and it humiliates Cadillac. I agree, GM better get these right, from chassis, to drive train to interior or Ford will eat their lunch.

      • That’s pretty funny. The Aviator doesn’t humiliate Cadillac at all. The Cadillac XT6 is meant to be nothing more than a extended XT5. It tops out fully loaded at $70k. It’s NOT a response to the $90,000 Aviator. The day Cadillac has a direct competitor to the Aviator meaning a true RWD unibody or BOF baby Escalade is the day Lincoln will throw in the towel. But Cadillac is too smart for that. Ford doesn’t know what the hell they're doing.

The Aviator literally offers more horsepower and more torque than the larger Navigator. Aviator offers the same 10-speed transmission, RWD ability, three row 7 passenger capabilities, identical interior, better executed rear exterior, in a smaller easier to maneuver package, for a slightly cheaper price. The Aviator will cannibalize Navigator sales. Watch!

On the other hand, 2020 FWD based Cadillac XT6 and the newly redesigned 2021 RWD based Cadillac Escalade will cater to two different customers but will do very well in both their segments. XT6 and Escalade are competing in two different markets but Cadillac will be successful in both.

To make matters worse the Aviator seems to have been a rushed job. It’s been said the Grand Touring hybrid motor doesn’t marry well with the gasoline engine. It isn’t refined. The batteries nearly add an additional half ton (1,000lbs) to the Black Label Aviator and there’s not much of a difference in performance. The air suspension doesn’t soak up imperfections in the road as well as it does on non-GT trims and it seems Lincoln did nothing to improve that ride quality with the added weight of the electric motor.

I truly feel Ford was overly excited and didn’t cover all of their bases. The aviator was a rushed job and it’s already been recalled because of it. So I truly find your arrogance for Lincoln and your assessment hilarious and I believe Cadillac is laughing. The Aviator and Navigator are both gorgeous compared to the rest of Lincoln’s lineup, but they aren’t humiliating anyone but themselves at the moment.

    • I'm guessing that the redesign was delayed so that they CAN get it right. At least I hope so. I still like the interior and exterior of the current model, but I'm waiting to see what they come up with.

  • The official reveal for GM's core competency is just around the corner. Can't wait to see them unveiled!

    • Between Fall 2019 and early first quarter 2020. But many sites I went to has it at the former. They did that with the current generation Suburban/Tahoe and Yukon/Yukon XL when it was revealed in September 2013 and went on sale in February 2014.

  • That things looks huge. It is going to be much roomier on the inside now. This thing with a 6.2 is going to be a hoot!

    • I noticed that with the Suburban and Escalade ESV as well. Plus its not as boxy given the more curvy design this time around.
