Volkswagen Pondering Amarok Introduction To Take On Midsize Truck Segment

Since General Motors shook up the midsize truck segment with the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, automakers have carefully watched the success of said vehicles. It led to Toyota paying attention to its Tacoma for the first time in years and Ford to eventually bring the departed Ranger back to the U.S. market.

However, Volkswagen may be looking to enter the segment with its Amarok pickup it sells globally. Speaking to Car and Driver, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Hinrich Woebcken, stated the current truck’s platform is not suitable for the U.S., but when it’s updated in two years, the automaker may consider it.

He remained skeptical on an introduction, however, seeing limited possibilities in the market for new players. But, he felt new entrants may cause the segment to grow further. In the meantime, VW has higher priorities following its diesel scandal, including the launch of its three-row Atlas.

  • Doesn't surprise me that more and more automakers are taking a closer look at the revitalized segment.
Expect Ram (Dakota) to get back into it. I can also see Mitsubishi and Mazda coming back in as well. Hyundai has already confirmed production for the Santa Cruz concept truck.
Plus add the Ford Ranger also recently confirmed.
I will be a crowded field over the next 3-4 years.

Fortune favours the brave so it is good that GM took the chance and jumped back into the segment which will give them a 2-3 year head start on any newcomers.
