General Motors Recalling Every Fifth-Generation Chevrolet Camaro Ever Built

It seems that all fifth Generation Chevrolet Camaro owners will be instructed to visit their local dealerships because of an issue stemming from, rather sensitively, an ignition switch issue.

The Problem: A driver’s knee can bump the key FOB and cause the key to inadvertently move out of the “run” position, with a corresponding reduction or loss of power. The issue was discovered by GM during internal testing following the ignition switch recall earlier this year. It is the reason for at least three crashes that resulted in four minor injuries.

Vehicles Affected: If your Camaro is built from the 2010 model year onward, this pertains to you. Including Canadian and Mexican market Camaros. All Gen. 5 Camaros. All of them.

Number Of Vehicles Being Recalled: Approximately 511,528 Chevrolet Camaros, including the new 2014 Z/28.

The Fix: Dealers will change the Camaro key to a standard design from one in which the key is concealed in the FOB and is opened by pushing a button. The change will make the ignition key and FOB independent of each other, so that inadvertent contact with the FOB won’t move the key from the “run” position.

  • I'm sorry, but I'm not going to get the recall done unless I absolutely have to. I like the key in the fob just the way it is, and my knee doesn't even come close to hitting the thing.

    • Bought my camaro Friday it's Wednesday and they still haven't fixed the dang recall. Keep getting the run around and they won't release my car to me until fixed...I've had the same type of key to my other GMC for 4 years and no problems.

    • I have a 2012 Camaro SS, and I have a issue with the steering pulling to left and right. I just bought this last Saturday and saw on car fax that the car had an alignment done on car already. The steering wheel gets away from you when driving on bumpy road or when you first start out driving. Something is not right! Anyone else with this issue? I have in shop right now to see if they can figure it out, seems to me others have had this issue also when you google it.

  • I cannot really see me having this problem, but I guess if you are over 6 ft. and with long legs you could possibly do this. It seems that every manufacturer with this type of key fob would have the same problem. Anyway I love my Camaro.

  • Just another bogus deal that GM has to react to about any case out there for fear of the legal system and the media. If they do not react then they are portrayed as a uncaring cooperate giant and they pay a price that way.

Until there is some form of tort reform in this country many companies will have to be like this as they are at a great disadvantage if anything goes wrong even if it is not their fault.

I think you have seen the end of keys at GM and will see more and more push buttons till someone finds away to crash with them.

I have one of these switch blade keys on my GMC and if recalled it will not be taken in.

Note on the Camaro web sites about 90% of the people are not going to do anything here as they like the fob and have no issues with their knees being close. I do not see GM being too upset with that as they made the offer.

It is a shame so many have to pay the price for a few who can find a way to de idiot proof an item.

Note I have pulled the keychain down in other models since this all started and have had the car shut off in other brands like Toyota and Honda. Not my Chevy that is recalled would not do it. Most others will not do it either.

    • Until the media finds another target. Even the major Airbag recall at Toyota, Honda and Mazda is not getting much media.

Hell Iraq is going to hell in a hand basket and CNN was showing how some teenage girl was giving her bed room a make over. The media today is so out of touch and controlled.

  • Until the namby-pamby's quit nit picking every stupid little thing and let GM get back at it's business.

  • That is a load of bull**** that key fob looks cool, like a mini pocket knife. I hope nobody is dumb enough to actually take it in to a dealer
